Hi G@rgoyle, I bet I would attract alot of attention taking the boys to the bus stop in a sidecar. I would probably be the talk of the whole school & then the town in a matter of hours. We live in a small rural town. No thanks, my motorcycle days are over. I'm an SUV mom now. I have to be with 2 boys that both play sports pretty much all year round.

Wrabbit, As soon as you mentioned Slick, I know where it came from. I think a trike would suit you just fine. Hey the next time you give Zappa away, can I be the one you're giving it too? LOL.

Later,

Hi G@rgoyle,

I've had a look for the The Anniversary boxed set that you mentioned, but could only find a box set called Perception. It appears to contain both CD and DVD-Audio versions of their six main albums. No mention of a rarities bonus disk.
I've been thinking of selling my three disks and saving up for this set or the one that you have (if it is indeed a different one).

My 90's section is also very slim (not much in the 80's either, bar a few the Cure and XTC albums), so I was interested to hear about Porcupine Tree. Although I've heard of Steven Wilson and Porcupine Tree, I'd never really considered buying any of their albums, as I was still busy collecting 70's albums. Which of their albums would you recommend?

Wow, racing a bike and side car on a track, you are a courageous person :<)
Are you going to drive the other side car on a track as well?

Regards,

Thanks G@rgoyle - it was Day after Day. That takes me back to some great outdoor sleepovers with some friends when I was still at school. We used to sleep under the stars watching for meteorites and satellites. I'll be showing my children the August and September showers when they come around this year. I finally fixed up the telescope for the kids. But so far we've only been looking at the moon; I've been rather distracted from such things since the accident, but the kids are now old enought to appreciate and learn about the stars. :)

I gave most of my Zappa Albums away to a friend who was intent on collecting them all. I just so happened to have a couple that he didn't have. He offered 30 pound for each album which was a lot of money in the mid 80's, but I refused the cash as I've always thought it wrong to make a massive profit out of such things, besides I wasn't too keen on Zappa at the time, though I do love some of his stuff.

I recently started looking for Captain Beefheart tracks and have managed to collect some pretty quirky stuff. I always remember Electricity, which I though was amazing the first time I heard it. Last time I saw Don Van Vliet was in a documentaty about Him and the Magic band. He looked so frail and I didn't think he was going to be around for much longer, but thankfully he's still alive and kicking, though devoting his time to art rather than music.

I would also have loved to have gone to Woodstock. I remember camping (well we were sleeping under the stars again) and hiking in the Yorkshire Dales in the very early 70's and came across a small village with a cinema. The film was Woodstock, which was brilliant.

I miss my motorcycles. I was planning to buy another one but the cycling accident over 3 years ago stopped that. Now I doubt I'll ever be able to ride again. I am considering a trike though. :)

Time for me to turn in.
Regards

Whiterabbit

(I also go by the name SlickWhiterabbit, though the slick isn't meant to denote slickness, but is a reference to Grace Slick who sang Whiterabbit. I use it for my AIM and Skype name, but haven't had AIM installed for a long time now ;)

Hi Ornithos,

Yeah, the 40th Anniversary Mixes definitely sound a lot better than some of the earlier CDs. I've got an Anniversary boxed set with remastered versions of all six studio albums (each in a mini replica of the original vinyl sleeve), so the series is complete and there's a rarities bonus disk in the box as well. Worth looking out for IMO :-)
I've bought lots of remastered CD versions and I've burned CD-roms from several of my old favs too, so I hardly ever touch the vinyl albums.
Now that you've mentioned Prog Rock...*smirk*. From the psychedelic 60's/70's to Floyd to early Porcupine Tree is only a small step and the 90's section in my music collection would almost be nonexistent without PT. Even my 50's section has more, but I never really listen to it though.

I've not been able to ride for two years, but I'm hoping to get back to it after my next operation. The motorcycle+sidecar outfit that I mentioned earlier sputtered home after its last track day in 1989. There's nothing to fix when there's a burn hole in a second oversize piston so it ended up being sold and given away in parts. I've got a couple of other motorcycles now and a sidecar that's ready to be attached.

Hi Sadie,

You'd attract a lot of attention if you took your boys to the bus stop with a two-seater sidecar. Sidecars aren't all that common in Europe either. People still stop to look and kids often wave.

So many favs at Woodstock and I missed it all too. I'd forgotten that The Who played. Thank You for the link! "I Put A Spell On You" would have to be my #1. I remember being head over heels and waling it together *goosebumps allover*. O'course, if there's ever a reunion they'd have to spread the love equally across the world and do it at Stockwood in the UK or at Stockwald in Germany ;-P

It's a clear night here... Good morning starshine... The earth says hello

Regards,

Hi Sadie,

Don't worry about not knowing the A's R and J's G albums well; they are mostly known for their title tracks anyway (which for the titular track of Alice's Restaurant amounts to almost the same, running as it does at over 18mins).

Too bad sidecars aren't popular in the US; you would have been able to do the school run (as we say here in the UK) with both boys: one riding pillion, the other in the sidecar. Sadly I can't use my bike to run my son to school as my wife would do me an injury. I'm just a fair weather biker, I'm afraid.

I would have loved to have gone to Woodstock, but sadly was too young to go (in my early two digits) as well as being on the wrong side of the big puddle :<)
I did manage to go to many rock concerts in the UK and Europe though.
I can recommend the classic Woodstock movie by director Michael Wadleigh to those who weren't there. One of favourite moments is Jimi Hendrix playing Hey Joe.

I would indeed be great if they managed to put a reunion concert together; I'd get a second mortgage and take my family across.

Hi Ornithos,

I'm not as familiar with their albums as I was only introduced to those songs in particular: Alice's restaurant & Joe's Garage. I was more into the dancing stuff and not so much rock (until I hit my early to mid 20's that is).

I also was a biker (chick). Not anymore though as it would be very hard to take both the boys to the bus stop on a motorcycle - lol. Although I guess I now qualify as redneck too because when its nice & warm out I go pick them up on the ATV.

Did any of you go to Woodstock? I didn't because I was still only in my single digits at the time & my mother was not a hippie.

I wish they would do a Woodstock reunion. That would be awesome. Some of the people/bands that played at Woodstock: Credence Clearwater Revival (CCR), Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (CSNY), Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead (of course), The Who, Canned Heat, Santana, Sly & The Family Stone, Melanie, Joe Cocker, Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie (of course), Blood, Sweat & Tears, Sha Na Na, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane (and of course they played White Rabbit). Here is a link to a full list of artists & all the songs they sang: http://www.woodstock69.com/Woodstock_songs.htm.

Ok, let's hear about your favorite Woodstock moment/song/memory.

wow, the memories come rolling back. It's the short term ones that go first isn't it?
I remember everything mentioned so far so I must qualify for the "aging hippy brigade"
just for Wrabbit Badfinger this was their biggest hit in the UK and resulted in a long running court case over the royalties after one of the group members died if I remember correctly.

Hi Sadie,

I love Arlo Guthrie (though he wasn't that prolific) and the Alice's Restaurant album in particular. One of my favourites is the The Motorcycle Song, being a biker myself.

My music teacher introduced me to Frank Zappa (and Pink Floyd, she was "ahead of her years" :<) in 1970. Frank was certainly prolific; who knows how many more (new) albums he would have made had he not died (far too young at 53) in 1993. I find I really need to be in the mood for his music as it's so quirky. My favourite album is 200 motels, and I think Joe's Garage (Act 1, or 2+3) is good, but not his best album.

I'm sure that others taking part in this thread also know these albums, but I suppose they've not been able to respond yet.

Keep 'em coming Sadie,

Ornithos

P.S. I will try not to start boring everyone with stories about Prog Rock bands in this thread, I'll just stick to 60s & 70s classics

Thank you. I will keep that in mind when I look for one again.

So no one here knows Alice's Restaurant? I'm really surprised. What about Joe's Garage by Frank Zappa? It's from the 70's but still had that mellow hippie edge.

And that is too funny about your sidecar. I guess they were more popular in Europe than in the US. I don't ever remember seeing them.

Yes I agree with Midori too, welcome to the love fest.

Hi G@rgoyle,

If you're into the Doors, you may be interested to know that - like the Surrealistic Pillow CD I referred to earlier in this thread - most, if not all, of the Doors' back catalogue has been digitally remastered and reissued. Last year I bought three out of a series of so-called 40th Anniversary Mixes: The Doors, Strange Days and Waiting for the Sun. These albums were remixed by Bruce Botnick and the remaining Doors members and released in 2007. They each also contain a number of bonus tracks and expanded sleave notes. Unfortunately I already had an early CD transfer of LA Woman which sounds rather flat, unlike the new mixes; these sound fantastic. If there are any others in this series I'm looking to complete the set.

Do you still have your motorbike and sidecar?

Oooh, The Doors bring back loads of memories for me LOL
In the old days I had a car battery in the sidecar so I could run a cassette player. Oddly, having "Keep Your Eyes On The Road" blaring out of the speakers didn't have the desired effect when I was overtaking cars... I still wonder why ;-D

Another one! Welcome to the Love Fest, lol. I love Day after Day. First time I heard it I thought it was Clapton because of the guitar. One I heard just yesterday is No Matter What. Was on my way to pick up my hubby at the train station and was tempted to speed so he could hear it. Oh what these old songs can do to you. It feels like I've got a jukebox in my head and the tune changes every time someone mentions one of my old favs *sigh*

Sadie1lady: Have you tried a DJ supply store for the turntable needle? Places that sell musical instruments and PA equipment sometimes sell DJ supplies too. Depending on the type of needle you need the usb turntable might be cheaper though. Good luck!

There's a Badfinger song that I absolutely adore, but haven't heard it for decades (literally) and can't even remember the name of the song. It was a hit for them in the UK in the early 70's. I'd love to find it someday.

Oh! Thanks, Sadie... don't know why I didn't think of clicking on your name. Someone else here has a "blue" name and I just realized it's because it leads to her website. Hm. I thought we could all PM each other, but I guess not. But I'd get in touch.

And a yes-wow for Disraeli Gears, Wrabbit... one I have in the basement and would love to copy. My husband and daughter actually saw Jack Bruce live this past summer. They were having a "Love in" type concert at Wolf Trap here (a quite well-known indoor/outdoor concert center for performances of all kinds) and they had a blast. I couldn't make it, but everyone wore all their old hippie gear and let their hair down. They said Jack was fantastic. Badfinger performed, and I really forget who else, but they had a good lineup. Oh yes... Eric Burdon of the Animals fame was another. (Remember "House of the Rising Sun" and "We Gotta Get Outta This Place?")

Hi Midori,

Yes I do sell them & have quite a following because I don't make the same old stuff most people do. I try to be different. For example did you know that Patchouli is actually an herb? And it does have medicinal properties! My salves are mostly what I sell & have a demand for. I think if you click on my name, it will take you to my site? It does for me, so I'm assuming it will for anyone that clicks on it. For other reasons/issues my site has not been updated since 8/08 & I have to leave it that way for now.

Thank you for asking and if you would like more info or to talk further about anything I make or sell, maybe we can correspond via email or phone rather than on here as I don't want to violate any TOS. I would rather not post my email address here but I'm pretty sure Wrabbit has it. So maybe you can PM him to get it as I can't PM you & I don't think you can PM me.

Nice one Ornithos, I'm partial to a little Cream now and again. I alsol ove Donovan. I had A Gift from a Flower to a Garden and HMS Donovan plus Cosmic Wheels, but all of those were left with my first wife. I miss A gift and Cosmic Wheels to this day, and must buy a digital version when I can, though you can't beat a good albumn sleeve or in the case of A Gift.... a boxed set.

As for Cream, Disreali Gears was one of my favorites. Sadly I never saw Cream live but I did see Ginger when he played with one of my all time favorite bands from the late sixties (who are still going strong) Hawkwind..... Cosmic Man! :)

It's awesome! You've gotta grab it, if you were into Cream at all. They played for three days and sold out and had an overflow waiting each time. It starts out with not one of their most exiting songs "I'm So Glad," but they get the feel and confidence of playing together again and you're thinking: Gosh. They look old. Lol! But then they absolutely take off and blow your mind with every song you can thing of, and you get so caught up in the sound it's a real groove. The only one I felt was missing was "Strange Brew," one of my favorites. Wasn't Steve Winwood in Blind Faith? Yes I'm sure, because he did a lot of the vocals.

And yes, Sadie... Donovan was one of my favorites also. Along with Dylan and I could go on and on. My daughter got me the "Blonde on Blonde" CD for Christmas because I miss the album so much. Do you sell your herbal products?

But be sure and grab that Albert Hall DVD, ornithos... it'll blow your mind! Lol! *%;-D

Midori,

As we have Whiterabbit's permission to carry on hijacking this thread (not that I need much encouragement :<), your mention of Cream really got me reminiscing ...
I caught the Cream reunion concert at the Royal Albert Hall on the BBC a while ago and hugely enjoyed it (White Room, anyone?; Trippy indeed). I hadn't thought about there being a DVD, but it makes perfect sense. I'll scour some of the sites in the UK for it.

It also got me thinking about the next group that Baker & Clapton founded, Blind Faith, and the whole concept of "supergroups". Now there's a word you don't hear anymore.

Update: I've found the Cream: Royal Albert Hall 2005 (double DVD) at Amazon UK for £12.98, that's about $20, I believe.

Peace & Love Wrabbit, you are so gracious to be ok with our hijacking. Thank you. Sorry you lost so many albums, but you know they say what comes around goes around. You have an awesome heart & all those things you lent out will come back to you tenfold (at least that's how it's supposed to work. And don't worry Wrabbit, strong opoids are always a good reason for forgetting - lol.

Glad to hear it Skyrider. I was always a Dead Head before I even knew who the Grateful Dead were - lol. You know the long wrap around batik skirts with the black tank top & bare feet. I guess you could still call me a hippie, at least some of my kids at school say I am (I'm a substitute teacher) because I make herbal salves & soaps & harvest most of my own herbs from my own land. And because of the whole natural thing I try to be as natural as possible so my hair is long & several colors (all on its own, including grey - of course). Yes, I guess I will always be a flower child but now it's Birkenstocks instead of bare feet.

Midori, Donovan did "Wear Your Love Like Heaven" along with "Mellow Yellow", "Hurdy Gurdy Man", "Sunshine Superman", "Catch the Wind", etc. Donovan was one of my very favorite artists/albums & I'm sure I still have it (packed somewhere). And I remember Cream too. God I'm sure we could go on forever.

I just love talking with you all. Like Wrabbit said: "everyone is so open & friendly". With how crazy life is these days, it's so nice to be able to come here & just daydream & remember & get lost for a few minutes.

Ok, how many of you know: you can get anything you want at "Alice's Restaurant"? Here is a link to Arlo Guthrie singing it (40 years later in the same church): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8DtpdXZi0M. I didn't get introduced to this song until later in life, however my family tries to catch it on the radio every year on Thanksgiving (just one of our quirky traditions).

Enjoy, Sadie

Skyrider,

You can get virtually all of the Dead's live concerts for free via the net now. Someone posted them on a dedicated Deadhead site, but the link is on one of my older computers which is in bits at the moment. When I first found it I couldn't believe how many there were. Most are taken from the original mixing consoles recorings so the quality is good. I've got most of them backed up on a disc somewhere.

Good for you getting the Steam song, ornithos... and of course I remember it. But Sadie, I actually went to bed curious about that and woke up thinking: "maybe she had her fingers on the wrong keys and meant Cream." Lol! BTW who's re-joining (Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce, and Eric Clapton) a few years ago at the Albert Hall is not a DVD to be missed. My husband and I give it a listen/watch now and then and laugh and grin from ear to ear. What a TRIP! Wear your love like heaven! *&:-) Ohmmmmm.

Sadie, I"m sure I started a thread several months ago along similar lines to what you are proposing. Trouble is my memory is so bad due to the strong opoids that I can't remember which category I placed it in. I'll have to look when I'm rested. :)

The only Jefferson album I have is a compilation of their greatest hits. Most of my album collection was lost when my first marriage broke down. I was the party who left and only took what could be fitted into an estate car. Also many albums disappeared while I was at university and in the army; partly because I've always been easy going with lending stuff or giving to people.

My music tastes cover a wide period of genres, but I do have a particular love of the 60's, especially the psychedelic movement. Though the first few albums I bought when I was a youth were heavy rock orientated. (Death Walks Behind You - Atomic Rooster and Paranoid - Black Sabbath).

regards

Whiterabbit (always a hippy at heart)

p.s.

Who cares if this thread has been hijacked. It's what I like about these forums. Everyone is so friendly and open. :) Pity the flower generation died so quickly.

Hi Victorianne, I so totally believe "In the Garden of Eden" - LMAO when I read that. Thank you. 40-50 years old, alot of mine date back to the 50's and then I've also got a bunch of classical albums that who knows how old they are. I'm not into classical that much & got them in a bulk deal.

Hi Midori & Ornithos, Yes I think "Incense & Peppermints" was their only hit. I remember getting it as a birthday gift from someone (when I was maybe 10'ish) and I remember thinking "What kind of a name is Strawberry Alarm Clock & who the heck are they? I never heard of them." Then I listened to it & went "oh, I know that song". As for Steam, I'm sure you know "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss him goodbye". Thank you for that Ornithos. That is one of my favorite trivia questions to ask whenever I'm somewhere & that song is playing. I say "Who did this?" 90% of people can't answer it.

And yes we have gotten off topic. Maybe Wizz or Wrabbit can take our posts here & start a new thread called maybe "White Rabbit & other music from way back when" Or any other suitable name anyone can think of?

Hi Sadie,

I think the Steam song that you were thinking of is called Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye. This was their only million selling hit in the (very) late sixties. Sadly the band was short-lived; who knows what other great sixties sounds they would have produced (I'm a big fan of this music period - sixties and seventies - originating both from the US and the UK).
I often used to listen to In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida myself as my older brother had the album, but not in a drug-addled state, I hasten to add. I've heard the same "legend" about the title as well. I'm not sure if it's true; sometimes these stories are just urban legends.

By the way, I bought Jefferson Airplane's Surrealistic Pillow CD last year after I found out that a newer, remastered version of the album (in 2003) had been released. Many of the earlier CD transfers had been badly flawed, with critics slamming their poor sound quality, which is why I'd kept my vinyl copy. I can confirm that the 2003 CD version sounds great and it even includes 6 exta tracks. I believe it's an essential buy for fans of the genre/period.

Regards,

SB

P.S. I just looked at the title of this thread and realised that we gone way off topic here :<)

Whoops! Thanks, Victorianne, as I forgot to answer Sadie on the music. And yes it IS 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida' by the Iron Butterfly, and that's how I read it got its name also. And Strawberry Alarm Clock? Have some "Incense and Peppermint." Gee, was that they're only hit? Now Steam I've never heard of. Can you name a song they did? or perhaps for those times that's asking too much. Lol!
*&:-D <~I'm wearing a flower in my hair because I'm going to San Francisco. And yes, I thought of the name and liked it, then thought: isn't that a liqueur? and liked it more. I'd say we got about six inches of snow also. The thing that shuts us down around here is the ice.

What great memories, all!!! LOL Sadie, i have that album, too, Innagaddadavida. i don't know if its true or not, but someone told me at that ime that they heard them on the radio talking about how the guy was stoned when he first sang it and i was supposed to be "In the garden of Eden" but it came out all slurred, and it just took off LOL. Sounds true for the time it was. :) And yeah, i need one of those USB turntable things, too. i have about 3 stereos that have turntables, as i cannotbe without one--i listen to my records!! So i want to get them on CD before i wear them out. Many are 40-50 yrs. old LOL.

Ah Wizz, The 80's was my favorite decade. I still love the music, it still gets me moving & wanting to dance. Yes I have some fond memories of dancing to a Michael Jackson song when I was on vacation in south Florida in the early 80's.

I hope your honeymoon is just awesome & we all know your wife will love it.

Wrabbit, I got 2 words for your trip: "more drugs". I can't imagine what it will be like for you for 9 hours on a plane that's not equipped to handle you comfortably. Hopefully your doc will be able to prescribe something for you to sleep most of the way. But you know what, I'm sure you will love the sights and I just know you all will love Disney. Seeing your kids enjoy it so much will make the trip worth it.

Maybe Midori & I should see if we could get together & meet you while you're here. Wouldn't that be something.

Hi Midori,
I have family in Virginia, south of Richmond. For some reason I thought you were midwest. I guess it's someone else.

Speaking of Disney, kids & honeymoons. We took our older son who was turning 3 at the time to Disney for his birthday and he is now exactly (to the day) 3 years & 9 months older than his little brother. What a Disney souvenir our little one was!

Yes I'll have to try google again when I find my info on the needle again - lol.

Have a good nite, it's off to bed for me.

Sadie
P.S. How much snow did you get Midori? We got about 6 inches. And did you name yourself after the liqueur? I used to drink it on occasion way back when, in my single days - lol.
