When I was mildly lamenting that SCUMM didn't support other games that I've already downloaded, it was in a 'resigned to this never happening' rather than 'I hope that they get around to doing these games' sense.

By looking at their FAQ, I think it was a project started to update games made in a certain game engine, and has expanded to include a few others. As far as I can tell, they plan to stick to that, but I think they also make the source code available on their site, but it looks like they need the source code of games to make them compatible, which some companies may not be willing to give, so it becomes a somewhat limited project. They also say on their FAQ that they don't plan to do any other games besides the ones based on that one engine(and a few exceptions). The source code for ScummVM is available on the website as well, so maybe others will pick it up. This is what it says:

"We do not have any plans to support any other non-SCUMM games at this time. If we do, it will be added to the Compatibility List.

Unless you work for a company interested providing us with source code for one of your classic titles, please do not ask us to support a game."

Maybe it will eventually. I'm sure the developer will want more games to be compatible. Otherewise it's likely to fade away.

I now have ScummVM installed and can run both of the Monkey Island games ok.

The interface is definitely more polished than DOSbox; if only it supported any of the other DOS games that I've already downloaded, dagnabit.

I can't give you much info on ScummVM as yet because I also only started using the emulator recently. Though some games that run in DOSBox will rum evenbetter in ScummVM. If you go to the ScummVM main page I think it lists the games that are suitable. I'd give it a try and see if you can see any differences in performance etc. It's easier to use than DOSBox.

I came across a list of games that run on a notebook http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/12-great-games-that-run-on-a-windows-netbook-517149?src=rss&attr=newsgaming/, and in that list it mentions Monkey Island 2, which I think of as my favourite game of all-time (although playing it again might show that my memory is officially defunct).

To run it requires downloading the ScummVM engine - does anyone have experience of using this (it's completely passed me by up till now) and is it easy to then get a game like Monkey Island 2 up and running?

Any help would be appreciated.

ScummVM site: http://www.scummvm.org/
ScummVM wiki page: http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Main_Page

EDIT: I have now downloaded both Monkey Island games from http://programs.holyfile.com/ and can run them in DOSbox, so I was perhaps a bit pre-emptive when I posted this, but some general info on ScrummVM would still be welcome.
