What was I thinking? If version 8.2 free was a major resource hog, of course 9.0 Pro will be, and then some! I've exited the program through the tray icon, and what a difference. Like I've got my system back. My curiosity is satisfied, and I will no doubt be uninstalling Ad-Aware soon. BTW, I have plenty of disk space, 3.0GB of memory, a 3.0GHz processor, XP Pro SP3, so I don't think resources are an issue here.

Copmom, in this case I agree. Like I said, I don't think you're missing much. I haven't been using Ad-Aware much recently. And Comodo Internet Security Suite (the free version) is doing a pretty good job for me. I do think I'll install a couple of the privacy options mentioned by Graylox recently, like Abine and the Firefox addon Better Privacy. One at a time, and see how it goes.

I still use Spybot S&D, and may try Malwarebytes, as Tailteann mentioned. Thanks, all.

I think with all that's going on with Ad-Aware I'm going to skip this upgrade. Spent too much time already just trying to get that Vicual C++ runtime 9.0 serv. pack 1 .. it won't install and without it Ad-aware won't install on set up. I guess I should follow the old rule, if it ain't broke, don't 'fix' it!

This thing has slowed my computer down so much I can't stand it. I don't know if that's a learning curve or not. Is there a way to turn it off without uninstalling it? If so I'd like to leave it on my computer to run scans occasionally. I think it's a good idea to run scans with different programs because they find things others miss.

Well for free things.. I've been using Comodo Internet Security both for a firewall and a virus program. So far it's been working pretty good for me. Several people on this forum recommended it to me when my McAfee ran out and I didn't want to pay to renew that one anymore.

My download and install went fine, but when I tried to stop a scan (clicked on the "Stop Scan" button in the program, which always worked before), the scan would not stop! Did multiple clicks on that button, also tried stopping it through the tray icon, and finally resorted to Task Manager. Like someone commented above (last year, I think), I do not like programs that will not take NO! for an answer, either.

I was running the Free Version 8.1 before, and didn't update to version 8.2 because so many people experienced it as a resource hog, but was curious about the Pro version. Remains to be seen whether I can get it to behave itself/not swamp my system.

So, Copmom, you may not be missing much. As was also observed last year, AdAware seems to be trying to be all things to all people. I already have an antivirus program, and I hope the AdAware one stays turned off.

This one is driving me crazy.. I've already got a prior version but did this download. Then went to setup and keep getting message: Microsoft visual C++ runtime 9.0 serv. pack 1 could not be installed. Please use windows update to manually install the update on your system. Ad aware setup cannot continue.

Then I followed the above and it will not install! Arggggggh! Then I went to my current ad aware, clicked on update, brought me to the same setup as above, and got the same error message. Even went to Lavasoft FAQ's and see that there are others with the same problem!

I am downloading it, but so far it's taken 2 hours at 10.9kb sec to download! Eeeks. Sure hope this is worth it after all that time.. they're servers must be mighty busy!

Good evening,
Thanks pavid and notblocklox, I was hoping my brand new Microsoft "habu" Christmas mouse was not acting up.
Now Ad-Aware AE is seeking revenge! since I won't let it boot up at start up and I have declined the weekly updates, now when I run the program, without running a scan and ad-watch is shut off, the program is basically sitting there idling, it is using between 49% and 52% CPU usage, till I shut it down again, "very strange". I think this program needs a Anger Management Training Program built into it. LOL
Have a good one,

Hi Barry,

I did notice the button problem you mention. No matter what I did I couldn't get it to change what I had initially asked for on the list so called "problems" (which weren't at all). I wasn't happy when it decided to run the 1 click fix up without asking me. The final straw came when I tried to close the program and couldn't. In the end I killed it with task manager, made sure no other
Ad-Aware modules were running and then deleted the poor excuse for a helpful program using Revo Uninstaller to make sure all or at least most of it was gone.

I'm still shaking my head at the fact that Lavasoft of all companies could release a program like this. If anyone lets it do what it wants to, they are going to have a host of problems later.

Ad-Aware made all those problems you describe of course on my system too. As I am not tech-savvy enough to recognise every false alarm, I'm going to uninstall this program now, after it made a good job a lot of years. Thank you Lavasoft; when this edition is improved and doesn't make such a mess any more, I'll come back.

Hi,
Pavid, I was wondering if if you noticed a problem I had with the choice selection buttons for what to do with the files found after a scan? I decided to quarantine one of those files, and had to click on it several times before it would respond, then after further investigation, I decided to put the file back to ignore once and I could not get that button to respond at all. I then played with a couple of other files, same thing, the buttons were very unresponsive. I finally just shut the program down.
Bye the way, the program still wants to run that weekly up-date file
(Ad-AwareAdmin.exe), every time I start Ad-Aware up, even though I changed all the prevalent settings within the program.
Have a good one,

As Barry said, I'm not impressed at all. I did a full scan of my system and it found 80 odd "problems". Many were uninstallers and most others were perfectly safe parts of programs that I have installed and used. The rest were required registry entries. Not one of them was malware related.

I could understand those results (maybe), if I did not regularly scan my system with other programs. However, with a firewall and antivirus program installed and regular full scans with them and other adware programs, I feel perfectly safe. If I had let Ad-Aware do what it wanted to do, I would now have a big mess on my hands.

Ad-aware used to be a good program, but I won't keep it when Ad-Aware is throwing so many false positives. I'm really disappointed with Lavasoft. Perhaps they should try just concentrating on one thing instead of trying to be all things to all people.

Hello,
So far I am not impressed with the new Ad-Aware program, after the first full scan the program found at least 9 false positives, mostly uninstaller files and a couple of .dll files that need to be left alone. What irks me the most is, even tough I refused permission through Scotty (WinPatrol)to be a start up program, it did anyway, and on my computer since it is a service, it was not in the start up list, so to stop it from booting up at start up, I had to go into Services and change "Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service" from automatic to manual. One other thing, I did not want the automatic weekly updates, I prefer to update these types of software manually, but even though I have refused permission several times to allow this, the program keeps on trying to run that file.
I have used Ad-Aware for years, one of the first anti malware programs I installed on my computer, it found hundreds if not thousands of nasties over those years, but I feel you have to have some measure of trust for these types of programs and this one has not measured up so far. Plus, I really dislike programs that do not accept NO! for a answer.
Anyway, have a good look at what the program finds before you remove anything.
Catch you later,
Barry

Maybe that 'false' positive, pointing to uninstaller files, is due to the fact some programs ,when uninstalled, connect to the company's web page without one's consent.

Thanks Michelle.. I just found that out. LOL It did UNinstall previous version. Then it rebooted. So far, I do notice that my machine is a tad slower responding to things .. maybe I'll do another reboot! I did turn it off since I don't want it automatically running when windows starts.. I prefer running these when I want them to run and not be in the task bar all the time.

No copmom you do not if you install the new one. I read somewhere after I uninstalled the previous version that it will uninstall the old version on it's own when you install the new version.

Yes Michelle I put it on ignore.

Allmedia Grabber v3.0 has an uninstall file it wants to delete, so if you
have that program installed then make sure you double check with ad aware settings.

Don't remove any uninstall files Lee.

http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-Anniversary-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?tag=TOCmoreStories.0&cdlPid=10998841

Take a look at the editor's review. It seems like they have a false positive in this version where it is incorrectly identifying uninstall files on some computers. I have not had this problem. I had a problem where it identified a Windows file as a suspicious file. The application has the ability to upload the file to Lavasoft and it did that. For now though I put it on ignore.

Well I also installed the free version 3 days ago.

Seems o.k., not as good as when I first used it 10 odd years ago.

Lavasoft made good games also, wonder if any of you played their games.

Only thing I find odd about it is, it tells me to remove some uninstall files.
