Windows 7 is shaping to be an awesome OS. It's everything people wanted Vista to be and more. Which is exactly why Microsoft should give it away—or offer it dirt cheap—to Vista users.

Apple gave away OS X 10.1 for free, and Microsoft should take a lesson there

http://www.twine.com/twine/11s1n9pn1-4g/then-came-windows-7

Google it Results of about 406,000 for microsoft-should-give-windows-7-away
Have a look not to good some help to fix & good luck,

Windows 7 is far from ready, I found installer problems with it.

You can get a random crash.

It's very hard to check for updates without it doing a dive.

I noticed it can have a long hang when opening older files.

Checked the Daemon Tools website and, if you haven't seen it, a forum there says DT is talking with MS about using it with 7. There's even a suggestion about installing it on 7. At least if your problem is with getting the sptd driver to load:

"Try to install SPTD separately, and remeber to run it as administrator; Then you can get your DT installed."

Here's the forum: http://forum.daemon-tools.cc/f19/daemon-tools-windows-7-a-22576/

@ Watcher13, I am using an hp dv5000 laptop which is about 3 years old or so, probably closer to the or so part. I also set it up on my hp desktop (about 3 or 4 years old as well) with no problems and the only thing it didn't catch for hardware was my ATI tv capture card. Otherwise the printer, video, sound, and network cards were all recognized.

I am currently running Windows 7 and yes while it does seem like Vista with a service pack, I find it to be a huge improvement over Vista. It runs faster and I didn't have to scour the internet looking for updated drivers for all my hardware, it installed everything just fine with the exception of my conexant audio drivers. It's not resource hungry like I found Vista to be. Microsoft claimed it to be fast booting and it is. It took about 15 minutes to install and it takes between 30 - 45 seconds to boot fully into windows.

All in all I am pretty happy with it. One down I found so far is trying to run Daemon Tools or a program that creates a virtual drive. But that was a problem that Vista had as well.

"If you love Windows XP, you’ll hate Windows 7"

No necessarily true. I'm an XP fanboy, but this Win7 beta is faster, smoother, and much better looking than XP. I set up a dual boot, but have had no desire to run XP since installing Win7.
Only 2 programs have failed to install so far. I did turn UAC off after a while...... have no use for that feature/annoyance.

Web, I sympathize, but we shouldn't lead anyone astray. For better or worse, Vista isn't a redesign of XP. There's still some of the basic NT code at the core of it. The new stuff, or at least the more fully implemented versions of borrowed ideas - like Aero and UAC - are add-ons. What I'm trying to say is that Microsoft is going to be relunctant to stop development on that stuff. Even the despised DRM.

Wow! 16GB? Really? And I thought all the unnecessary services turned on in Vista were excessive!

Come back, pleeease to XP. XP was built upon 2000, and 2000, the one before that. With Vista, they started out new. That's what's wrong with it.

I went a few days ago to test the new Windows 7.
The one thing that put me off then and forever will is 16GB of hard drive space!!!!!

Ok everyone says that hard drive space is so cheap now and everyone bar me has over a TB but for that kind of space I have to wonder what crap has been added.
The core of an OS even vista would never come to over 1GB when will Microsoft learn that OS's are for running programs not for Sorting your record collection and analysing your navel lint through webcam technology.

When somebody finds out how to strip this down to a 1GB OS I'll be using it, until then I'm gonna have to rely on XP and stripped Vista.

Watcher13 and Bubby, I'm right with you there too, until there has been time for the bugs to be ironed out with the first wave of suckers...I mean users it's pointless anybody trying it.

Gotta say, "Amen Brother Bubby!" Of course, you all know the standard cliche - don't bother to upgrade to the next Windows at least until the first Service Pack arrives. Obviously, that's a little unfair. I mean, it's not as if Apple doesn't release a LOT of mods to every OS release. And few, if any, new Linux versions are lacking significant bugs right out of the box. But, I believe the standard suspicion about MS. That is that they've rushed every new version out before it was even close to being ready. On the other hand, maybe the initial good reports on 7 reflect the fact that Bill's retired. I saw parts of an interview lately (my stomach could only stand so much) where he said he was only coming in once a week to consult. Maybe that means he'll only screw up one project at a time. I'm one of those who believe there are plenty of great people in Redmond who could produce high quality stuff if only The Evil One, and his toadie minions, would leave them alone. Perhaps the last word on that should come from the 7 Beta site itself, "It can be glitchy—so don't use a PC you need every day." Gee, thanks!

That being said, I'm using Vista and haven't added SP1, yet. That's partly because of a minor OEM problem that I haven't gotten around to fixing, yet. Oh well, "One of these days...." But I've seen good things about SP1, Whabbit, so maybe you'll get more satisfaction this time.

Now to be a complete boor, I gotta say, "I told you so." Well, probably to nobody here, but in general. Anybody that was hoping that MS would roll back all the Vista development and just release a shiny new XP were fooling themselves. For one thing, to take the most pessimistic view of Vista, that would require MS to admit they made a huge mistake. That wasn't going to happen. ME is not a good example. MS didn't kill ME because it was a dog. They'll killed it because it was a DOS based dog, and they were planning to terminate that blood line, anyway. And they never really were planning on taking ME far into the new Millenium. It was just the typical Bill trick of releasing a new OS to con more people into buying something they didn't need. As Fubar wisely put it in the StarBurn comments section, MS gets most of it's money from OEM installations. Which I assume means new OSs will be released anytime the profit reports start to lag. Whether they (or we) are ready or not.

Having said all that, here I am downloading 7. Doing some beta testing of it might help me impress somebody at that hoped for new IT job. Now all I have to do is decide whether to use it virtually, or finally get over my fear that I'll screw up the repartitioning. After all, it is the computer I "need every day".

I have never hated Vista in the first place, and as I have played with Windows 7 I think it is an improvement. Although it does look quite a bit like Vista there are a number of nice changes. For one thing that got rid of that useless sidebar. Makes you feel like you have a larger screen again :). At present it has a smaller footprint and from what I have read from other testers it is faster then Vista and less resource hungry. I know that a lot of people just like to complain so there is going to be no pleasing them but I still think that Windows 7 is and is going to an improvement over Vista (even though Vista is not all that bad).

I've a friend who's a microsoft beta tester. he likes windows 7. there's still some bugs in it, and ya can't game with it just yet. mp3's are mutilated and software is often incompatible... (hm, no idea WHY the guy likes it then eh? )

it's fast. it's smooth, it's almost right.

Well I don't care what the press or users or fanboys or bashers have to say at this stage - because it matters for nothing.

I'll wait until 3 months after it hits the shop shelves - and everyone else has spent their money and there is enough critical reviews of the code that I would actually be installing on my PC.

I will be looking at what has changed - and ask myself, "Do I actually need this?" and "Do I need the software incompatibilities that come with the new version?" (How many programs are only now getting a version update to run on Vista?).

I think of the saying - "The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence... or the view/vista is more spectacular"... Until you arrive there and realise it wasn't so bad where you were after all.

The other point worth mentioning - Microsoft has in the past pulled windows features at the very last moment - so looking at a beta product, don't assume you are looking at the final blueprint of the 'Gold' product.

lol.

I'm not sure what to make of it yet.

As for Vista, I'm just annoyed that I bought a copy in Set 07, and have only ever got 1 months use out of it. The rest of the time, the disc has lain dormant on my shelves. What a waste of money. I could have bought some extra storage space instead.

    * The beta of Windows 7 (or is it really just a great big Vista service pack?) will be available to the first 2.5 million people who download it on Jan. 9. I know it seems silly to ask but… is there a specific time on Jan. 9? Here in Silicon Valley, our clocks will be among the last in the world to reach the midnight hour.

    * Windows 7 Beta will expire on Aug. 1, 2009. Huh? Expire? So everything just resorts back to the older crappy version of Windows?

Ballmer was due to announce that a nearly final "beta" test version of Windows 7 is ready for regular PC users to download and tinker with.
