'Beneath a Steel Sky' and 'Lure of the Temptress'....................Extra's!

.

I've found that you can play both Beneath a Steel Sky and Lure of the Temptress using ScummVM emulator rather than the DOSBox emulator, (if you prefer). To be honest at this point I cannot say which is better apart from the fact that DOSBox supports most DOS Based games wheras ScummVM only supports a limited few at this point in time.

You can download several different versions of ScummVM that inclue Mac and Linux versions, so it would be interesting to find out from those who run these systems whether the games work on these systems. I don't know whether a linux version of ScummVM would play a version of either of these two games or the 100 + other games it supports.

You can get ScummVM from the following link:

http://www.scummvm.org/downloads.php

I also stumbled across the following bug report on Beneath a Steel Sky. It's nothing major, but just in case you do stumble upon any of these bugs I thought I'd let you know that they are known bugs that were never fixed when the game was originally released:

The following bugs are present in the original game and can't be fixed:

- The voice files for some sentences are missing.
This is especially noticeable in the court- and Mrs. Piermont sequence.

- The fonts for the LINC terminal are partially incorrect and the text sometimes passes the screen borders

- Special characters for french and italian subtitles are incorrect sometimes

======================================================================

Has anyone tried Beneath a Steel Sky yet? I'd be really interested in hearing what you think of the game because it was a favorite of mine when it was first released in 1992? I spend many an evening playing it on my old 386 computer (with a cpu speed of around 30MHz and 4Mb of RAM) when I should have been writing up my essays while doing a post graduate teaching diploma. I found it a great distraction from getting down to work, lol. Thankfully it didn't stop me from passing the course with flying colours. I bought it on the strength of playing one of those floppy disc demo's that all the computer magazines of the early 90's used to give away.

Here's some level bypass cheats for those who find the game too hard:

Level passwords:

Enter these passwords on the password screen in the D-Linc Cyberspace.

And the following links takes you to walkthroughs made by different community members some of which . As Midori, I rarely use such things, but they can be useful if you've got to the point where Midoi indicated that theres only one hair left on you head through sheer frustration at not knowing what to do. In any event if you are going to play this game (highly recommended), I think it's worth reading through the preamble at the beginning of the first walkthrough link, where the author gives background information on the game as well as describes how to speed up the movement of the game, or slow it down when necessary. There are points in the game where you have to accomplish timed events that are nigh on impossible unless you slow the game right down. You'll find these as you come to them though :)

Hi albesir, Yes, I successfully downloaded the tiny file from Abandonia, thank you for that. I haven't had time to look at the other sites you mentioned yet to see if the 12mb file was on them (well, all but the dos site) as I was rather keen on getting a look at the improved graphics, lol. Even for me being on dialup, the 1.xmb file seems tiny!

I have now emailed GOG to let them know I'm having trouble joining and therefore downloading. I am rather interested in buying a few of their games, but I can't buy them if I can't download them!!

Thank you for your help, I will check out the other sites you gave as soon as I can. I'm off to bed now, it is nearly midnight.

NolafromNZ, did you try the abandonia link I gave too?
http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/83/Lure+of+the+Temptress.html
And there are a few more links you can try:
http://www.dosgamesonline.com/index/game/527/Lure_of_the_Temptress.html
http://www.gamershell.com/download_1769.shtml
http://www.dosgamesarchive.com/download/game/187
http://www.revolution.co.uk/_display.php?id=10
(the last one has French, German, and Italian versions as well)
I've never had any problems with acid-play or abandonia or gamers hell, so I don't really know what the problem is.

P.S. Whiterabbit, I think DOSBox is technically an emulator, but I'm not really sure what the definition of an emulator is, so I could be wrong.

Thank you wizzard_of_oz for your alternative download for Lure of the Temptress - but that didn't work either, I just got "Firefox can't find the server". I was able to download a lot of other games that appealed while I was on the Acid Play site though. So, I can take a hint, lol, I'm not supposed to play this game! That's fine, there are hundreds of others that you and White Rabbit and reverseOrder and Webmaster have given us!

Thank you for your trouble though, and I apologise for not getting back to you earlier, lots of merriment and boozing here over the New Year period.

Hey Midori, if we started adding all the emulated games there would probably be enough games to post ten or so every day for several months. I'm just amazed at how many great games there are available for free. Most of course are the old games from all the olkd consoles, that I thought had disappeared many moons ago, but with the guys and gals who develop all the emulators we've been able to download for free almost every game that was ever released. Amazing..... :)

Have a great 2009 everyone....

Thanks very much for the info Whiterabbit. I'll download a demo of them and see what he thinks.

Albesir, I would definitely agree that if the quality of gameplay is the same, the game with better graphics would be preferable.

Yes, there's no substitution for great gameplay, although with the technology these days, graphics make those games better. Cause really, many games put out today are not all that different than older games, just updated with new engines and better graphics. In some of the famous series that have existed for a long time, the gameplay hasn't changed much, only the graphics. I much prefer better graphics, but if the gameplay isn't there too, then it isn't worth it for me.

Hi Knot Me,

The earlier games are not first/third person viewpoints but more like an isometric viewpoint where you look down and to the side of the characters who all look small, though you can pan around changing your camera angle and even zoom in to see more detail. The game play is similar but not the same.

If you're thinking of getting any of those games I recommend you first try a demo of them.

You can see details of them here:

Fallout:

http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/fallout

Video:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=WzSOKi_t5fg

Fallout II:

http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/fallout_2

Video:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=nDRsqz3iyks&feature=related

Fallout: Tactics (probably the best one after fallout 3):

http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/fallout_tactics

video:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=rGin82blmh4&feature=related

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=MfDm0_m8z0Q

If your son likes them then I'd not buy them from Gog as you can get all three on one disc a lot cheaper. The $5.99 they are asking for each may seem cheap, and to be honest is still a fantastic bargain as I'd say each one is far superior to any arcade game that professes to have similar game play (The nearest example I can think of is Eschalon Book 1 ($19.99), which is a great game, but not as in depth as any of the Fallout series, though it's graphics may be better because it's only been released less than six months). Totalling up the three it still comes to less than what you'd pay for an arcade game at $17.97. I only paid £3.33p ($4.66) for all three games from Game.UK; (though that was because it was part of a package where If I bought three games that normally retailed at £4.99 each, if bought seperately, I'd only have to pay £3.33 each plus 1p, totalling £10. The fallout series counted as one game because it had been collected into one package called Fallout Collection. I'm really pleased that I bothered to buy it with all three of them (though one of the other games I got with the package that I'd bought for my daughter I discovered I'd already bought previously from Reflexive, lol. The three games date from 1997, 1998 and 2001 respectively and seperately they would have no longer have been available but for Good Old Games, though all three were re-released as a collection only three months ago as part of the pre release hype for Fallout 3; so you'll probably find it in any decent computer games shop

Wow, that's a huge list of games. Perhaps my New Year's resolution should have been to play more games, and I'd be all set.

As I likely mentioned in a previous post, I've only recently registered an account here, but I've been lurking for well over a year. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who take so much time to provide us with links to free games. I'm sure there are many more people like me who don't register a forum account, but still look forward to the gems you guys hunt out and graciously share with us.

White Rabbit, my son just finished Fallout 3 on Xbox 360 yesterday. He's all set to go through a second time. I've never heard him talk about a game so much, except maybe Left 4 Dead. In terms of game content, are the earlier Fallout games comparable to the newest one? I'm sure the graphics aren't as good, but that doesn't matter. Good game-play trumps great graphics any day.

The one at GOG is an updated one with improved graphics; hence the larger size. The same goes for Under a Steel Sky. you'll find that at a couple of the abandoware sites (though I think the original has been removed from some due to the re-release of the updated version.

Please note that I do not know whether the offer from GOG (Good Old Games is a permanent one, so I suggest that you go over to their site and download both these games pronto, ASAP, quickly....... as you may be disappointed. Both are classics, though I prefer Under a Steel Sky, which I originally had as a bought copy when it was on floppy discs.

I no longer have my purchased copy of Under a Steel Sky, but I did download the abandonware sites version and compared it with the updated version from GOG and to be honest I saw very little difference between the two versions.

(I've withheld the address of the abandonware sites version of Under a Steel Sky as I'm not sure how legal it is yet; but as I bought a full version license all those years ago, {I seem to remember paying at least £30 for the game}I don't feel that I'm contravening any laws - care to debate if you think I may be wrong, lol).

Here's the download link again:

http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/beneath_a_steel_sky/

N.B:
Remember, you do need to sign up for a newsletter at GOG before they will release the download links to both of the free games.

They also have several budget games that I bought via another source. I can highly recommend the two Fallout games plus the expansion. I've been playing the latest installment of that series Fallout 3 almost exclusively since it came out in mid November, and bought the earlier ones in response to liking the game so much. The viewpoint of these earlier games is much like games like the Command and Conquer series, or the more recent World in Conflict or Universe at War and other games such as the Neverwinter Nights 2 series and Hard to be a God, but they still have the rpg elements that you get in Fallout 3, only the viewpoint, which reminds me of the pseudo 3D, isometric views you got in games pre the 3D revolution (eg the battle mode in Darklands. a DOS game I posted several weeks ago, or Gauntlet, {I've posted links to a fan made version of that one called Gauntlet re-visited}.

Another one I highly recommend from GOG is the Flashpoint series. You get the original Flashpoint game ‘Cold War Crisis’ plus both expansion packs ‘Red Hammer’ and ‘Resistance’ (on 3 CD’s in one DVD box) for only $9.99, which is amazing. The game is the precursor to the Armed Assault series that was released back in March 2007 and it's expansion Queens Gambit earlier this year (Feb 2008) that some of you may be familiar with.

The game is a sandbox style game (similar to the Battlefield series - Battlefield 1942 plus two expansion packs, Battlefield Vietnam, Battlefield 2 plus one expansion pack and two booster packs and Battlefield 2142 plus one booster pack) where you can wander around almost anywhere on a massive island. The game is nearly seven years old now, but the in game scenery and 3D game play was unparalleled at the time and still looks pretty good even today; though don’t try and compare it to the likes of Crysis, STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl</trong> and it's expansion STALKER:Clear Skies, Grand Theft Auto IV or the last few Call of Duty games. I’d compare the game to the original Call of Duty which is only 5 years old. In fact, checking through the list of available games I’ve just ordered, the first Flatout racing game that was released about 3 years ago and Colin McRae Rally 2005, both of which are only $5.99 & $9.99 respectively. Fantastic….. :~)

Hope everyone had a good(and safe) New Years celebration. Also, Abandonia also has Lure of the Temptress:
http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/83/Lure+of+the+Temptress.html
I am curious about it though. The version I keep finding in several places is much smaller than the one on gog.com, which says is 12 MB(and the others are under 2 MB). Anyway, Happy New Year to every one again.

Stephen,I really appreciate your hard work for us!
I am sure you love playing games, but for what you are doing it needs more then just love playing-you are giving us all your love and support.Unfortunately English is not first, even not second my language and I can't express everything I want to, because of my poor few hundred words vocabulary.
Happy New Year,Stephen, and God bless you and all your family!
Keep on doing your unrewarding labour!
Regards from Bulgaria!

Hi Stephen, I tried downloading Lure of the Temptress and can't. When I press the Download Now button, I get asked for my log in to GOG or to create one. When I try to create one, the site just ends up stating 'Done' without actually doing anything. If I click on the Download Now button again, we just go through the whole thing all over again. What am I doing wrong?

We've got so many more games to post yet, even with reverseOrder posting extras on the Fridays and The Webmaster on the Monday or Wednesday. I reckon you could always take a day off on one or more of these days if you felt like a rest. It's surprising how much time it takes to do this 'work'.

Will you be posting that other big one we discussed a few weeks ago soon? Maybe leave it for at least three or four weeks or even longer now because there have been a couple of big ones posted this last week already and as mentioned previously; the big ones are a lot rarer. Then again, it's up to you when you post it. :)

wow rabbit, this is an impressive list of games. I've tried several of these already in my quest for our project. I can tell you that cloud is definitely unique with beautiful graphics. However, the control scheme is a little awkward and I never fully got the hang of it. I'll be downloading a few of these to keep me occupied through the weekend.

=====================Here's some more games=============================
.
.

Just in case you didn’t find what you wanted above, here’s some more (thanks again to Albesir for the first three – you’ve come up trumps again). The first three do require you use Kraisofts games manager, which reminds me a lot of Gamehouses manager. The Everyday Jigsaw Puzzle may advertise more jigsaws, which is why it’s called The Everyday Jigsaw Puzzle. I decided to add more games to the New Year Games Bonanza simply because I’d hardly touched the games I originally planned to post this Christmas due to the computer crash early last week, which caused me to lose all the documents I’d prepared for the Christmas and New Years vacation. Quite a few of the games I have posted are the result of Albesir and pavid, who must have taken pity on me after reading my plight. Anyway, the links that both provided led to me finding more free downloadable games from indie sites. Many of the games I've found as a result of extending my search will be posted in the coming weeks (and months)together with Wizzard, reverseOrder and now The Webmasters contributions.

2009 promises to be really good with respect to free games as the last four months of free games, with many games distributors giving away free games (maybe the economic climate has instigated this). I’ve never before seen so many free and reduced in price games as I have in 2008. Oddly it all seems to have started when the game giveaway project started. Though prior to this there were always freeware games available, and more recently abandonware and even more recently advert supported games. Also, many games are being reduced in price substancially, whereas previously, you were lucky if you got a 10% reduction in price. For example, I saw a strategy cum third person fighting game called Mount & Blade the other day, which was retailing for around $40. Last night I found it reduced by 50% for the Christmas period only at a different site. Then take the free offer of the Venture Arctic game that Knot Me posted the other day. If you ordered it’s sister game Venture Africa at the same time you got Venture Arctic for free and Venture Africa for half price. There are many more examples like this that are becoming more frequent, which can only be a good thing for us consumers; there are probably going to be many more over the coming year so I reckon 2009 is definitely going to be a bumper harvest for those like myself who collect games (like some collect stamps).

Anyway here’s a second smaller bonanza for you :)

Tunnel of Doom reboot: (44Mb)

Tunnels of Doom Reboot (ToDR) is a remake of the classic dungeon RPG Tunnels of Doom (ToD), released on the TI-99/4A home computer. The original game featured three character types, an up to 10 level dungeon, quests, magic items, and a dual perspective environment (3D hallways and overhead rooms). It was one of the earliest (and richest) graphical RPGs, and is fondly remembered today by those lucky enough to play it in its original form.

This remake is an attempt to bring the fun of Tunnels of Doom to new players, with enhancements that will hopefully allow the game to take advantage of improved technology without compromising the pleasure of the original.

There’s a toolkit available via the reference above for those who fancy porting old adventures over to this game. Though don’t ask me how to, lol

You’ll find some images of the game on the same page as the download link. The download link for both the game and the toolkit (though it’s not required) is just above the thumbnail images to the right of the page.

Raid over Moscow: (1.96Mb)

You’ll need to read the read me document found in the unzipped folder, which has detailed instructions on how to play this game. It’s fully keyboard controlled.

After the best part of 6 years and more procrastination than is healthy, Layden has put the finishing touches to Raid Over Moscow. Access Software/US Gold’s controversial (if you’re from Finland) multi-game-type cold war era epic thingamyjig. A wonderful mix of politics and things that wot only happen in computer games all kludged together in a morally dubious, difficult but fun, package.

Control your American saviour of the universe and stop the evil red threat, and their robots. Yes, in that fine 80’s tradition you fight your way through to Moscow and the Kremlin to shut down their nuclear reactor which is guarded by robots. Obviously. It’s well known that even in the UK’s nuclear reactors that in case of attack, they keep a series of deadly robots on hand to stop any pilots that might attempt to infiltrate their plants.

Taking its lead from Bruce Carver’s previous Beach Head titles, Raid Over Moscow presents you yet again with a series of mini-games that at the time, a couple of them would have been ample enough to warrant a budget release all of their own all bunged together into one coherent package and well, you’ve got an alright game elevated into the serious value for money territory. If only it wasn’t so stupidly difficult at times.

Trixx: (1.3Mb)

Trixx is a Tetris clone; I posted several of these early on in the project, but I much prefer this one for some reason; (possibly because I’m into emulators right now, lol). The general rules of the game remained unchanged. For the blocks fall from the top of the two-dimensional well; these blocks have to be turned and set in order to create a full line that’s horizontal to the two-dimensional well horizontal , which then disappears. The game ends at a time when there is no room for new wells in the falling block. For each stage, blocks fall slightly faster, and sometimes there are additional surprises in the form of changes in the structure of the wells. You can select from several types of shaped blocks before you start the game. One of the sets is unusual, because the pieces are created randomly by a computer. In this way they can be very different shapes, sometimes severely hindering your game play and making it much harder to succeed.

The whole game runs in VESA mode 640x480x15bit so graphically is very nice compared to the average version of Tetris. Blocks running smoothly after the wells look quite smartly. In addition, the game has quite a number of options not available in other games of this type.

You will require DOSBox for this game, though it may play on aWin 98 system and almost certainly on a win 95 system. You can find details of how to set up DOSBox in the forums.

======================================================================

And finally one more big one:

Broken Sword: The Return of the Templars v2.5

I was saving this game for a rainy day, but couldn't resist making this a real bonanza free game giveaway.

This is a free sequel to the popular Broken Sword 2 as opposed to Broken Sword 2.5. It’s a brilliant point and click adventure, with graphics that rival any commercial game. I know I’ve posted three or four of these recently, so will slow down after today’s offerings – I promise. There’s loads of different mirrors for this game, so it’s unlikely that you’re going to have a problem downloading it. :)

There is one thing about the game that some may not like and that is the spoken dialogue is in German and the written in English. This means that you just need to turn the sound off. I decided to include another classic point and click game today partly to compensate for the language differences, and also because I wont be posting any more point and clicks for a few weeks at the very least. Personally I have no problem with it myself, and am looking forwards to picking up a few words of German, and improving my grammar.

The following is the basic story prior to the game starting:

The last months were quite a blow of fate to George Stobbart. First he had to leave Nico for one year because of an important trip to the USA, then his beloved grandfather died of a cancerous growth. But that was not everything. When George receives a telegram from France one day he already has a foreboding of evil. The consigner is–Nicole Collard, Paris, France. His presentiment shall turn into cruel certainty: Nico is dead! "First my grandpa and now Nico?", George thinks and takes the first plane to Paris.

On his arrival: Rain, storm, like an appropriate divine answer to George's situation. In Nico's apartment the next shock: Nico is alive. Totally bewildered he tells her about the telegram but Nico seems not to be surprised. On the contrary, she asks George to leave the apartment. She does not seem to take delight in the unexpected reunion.

Still sorting his thoughts in the Cafe della Chandelle Verte–where everything began–George hears an alarming story about Nico from Andre Lobineau making the unpleasant thought germinate in him that the Neo-Templars could still exist…

======================================================================

I’ve gone a little mad today with all these games, but there are hundreds more games to come over the next several months.  If you are looking for up to date arcade games with exceptional graphics, you wont get them from this project, but I guarantee that you will find some brilliant free and abandon ware titles, and others with nearly as good graphics; though it's all a matter of opinion anyway.  for example I happen to love the art style of the Indie platform game Gish, which has a particular style that  some would think is very child like, yet I think is very professional looking {roll on the sequel - Gish 2, which is in the pipeline for anyone who's interested}

If you’re looking for the former (i.e. - commercial quality), then I suggest you do one of two things. Visit sites like Gametop, Freegamespick and now Gamehouse, where you can get full version commercial quality games for free.(Googling any of those names will bring up the home addresses) - Gametop has around 80 titles covering virtually every genre; Freegamepick has about 40 (though there is some crossover in content), both of these site do open up your browser when you close a game down, but does not hijack your browser; and there is no other malware problems (I've tested all but a few) - that said Gametop has recently started asking if you want to add a toolbar to yourbrowser and or even hijack your browser, but all you have to do to avoid this is ensure the appropriate check boxes are unchecked during installation. This is very different to another free game download site called MyPlayCity - most of the games require you to have your home page directed to their home page and have a toolbar installed. There's no choice. No toolbar/hijack - no game, though there are some exceptions. you can tell those that are like Gametop as they only ask for a toolbar to be installed and this can be unchecked. You still get the browser opening when you shut the game down, but as with Gametop and FreeGamePick, you can turn it off without any feedback. Gamehouse give one game away every day, but these are advert supported. There are a few other places similar to MyPlayCity that install toolbars and hijack your browser, and even worse, mess up your registry (iWin being one of them, especially if you installed iWins game manager. Please excuse the waffle, I just felt it important that you are aware of these issues with some of the free games sites. If you're unsure, I'd recommend you stick with Gametop, so long as you keeop an eye out for those odd hijacks.

The second option is simple, purchase the games you fancy Though I do realize that not all are as lucky as I've been over the last few years. If I wasn't in the situation I was in (re: my accident), my wife would have curtailed my game spending sprees long since.

The whole idea for this project was to carry on in a low key mode, (and I say this because generally the games we post don’t come up to the commercial quality of many of the games that were given away via the game giveaway project, though in my opinion, many of the games are much better when you compare game play, and in many cases, originality)where the game giveaway project left off last March when it went from a daily giveaway to weekends only. I kept reading comments asking when it would return, so decided to start the project after I'd returned from my summer vacation; though I didn’t expect it to last so long as I had no idea there were so many free games available because I have always purchased most of my games up until the game giveaway project was introduced to me at it’s inception on the 2nd Dec 2006.

Okay, I’ve waffled on long enough this year, so all that’s left to be said (again is:

===========================HAPPY NEW YEAR=============================
.
.
.
.

Darn it, here's just one more game for the road, lol:

Varia: (15.6Mb)

The way the options work in Varia is similar to the way they worked in Gradius series - the options trail after you, and one of the abilities that you have in both games is the ability to freeze your options into their relative positions. Gradius V has a lot more ways to use your options, but the author said he felt the freeze method worked very well. He hit upon upon the idea of letting the player to be able to absorb an enemy weapon with the options that you can get from power-ups. You have to freeze the options in place and "catch" an enemy shot, which you'll then be able to use to destroy the enemies in return. There are 10 different types of shots you can absorb. This is similar to Harmoniun that was included in the games I posted earlier and also Echoes that was posted yesterday. All three are excellent psychedelic space shooters, though as mentioned previously, Harmonium is multiplayer only. If you like this type of game check out Fraxy as well; oh yeah and the Space shoot ‘em up’s thread in the game discussion forums, as there are loads of decent space shooters, though probably not as colourful as these three. (Just Google the as I haven’t time to add it now because it’s almost New Year, 10 minutes away, though I may re-post it sometime soon)

System Requirements:

Minimum 512 RAM, 2.1 GHz processor and 32mb video card for decent performance

(most computers built in the last 5 or 6 years will have an on board graphics chip that at least equals this value), and if you have a graphics card, then again it's been a few years since they sold such small RAM sizes for graphics cards - Some of the bigger computer hardware stores may still stock such cards, which you can pick up for literally a few dollars.

Just so long as you find a few that are enjoyable. I agree with you on cloud; not my cup of tea either, but it is unique. I haven't really played it. Thankfully most of the games above come with video's.

O_O that's quite a few games....I saw the Cloud game the other day. It doesn't really look like my kind of game, but looks like something completely unique. Also, The Sewer Goblet looks interesting as well. Both that and the Charles Barkley game looked hilarious if nothing else(though I haven't gotten to them yet, and don't know what order I'll be going in with the games I've downloaded). Whew....

=============================HAPPY NEW YEAR=============================

Here’s a whole bunch of games that I’ve either just found thanks to community members such as Albesir and pavid (was that a typo?). You’ll find a couple of big name freeware and abandonware games as well as a ton of other games from several genres. (Well, mainly shooters, platforms and point and click adventures, lol) There should be something for everyone, which was the idea behind posting a bonanza crop of games for the New Year. I’ll introduce the post with the three I consider big name games. The first has already been posted in the forums last year and is well buried, so I thought this would be an ideal opportunity to bring it back to the fore. Well actually the download includes three games, but I wont bother mentioning one of them. You can find that one out for yourselves. Suffice it to say that it’s a sort of 3D shooter, but the graphics are very blocky and the game is ancient. (I suppose many of the games we post here are as well, lol).

Most of the games come without installers apart from the first four games, so you’ll need to unzip the contents of each zip file into a pre prepared and named folder. You can either place the folder first then unzip or unzip and place the folder, then you’ll need to create a shortcut. There’s a short demo in the games discussion forums that tells you how to do this for both a desktop and start menu shortcut.

Also most of the smaller games are keyboard only games, though not exclusively. I’ve prepared the following in rather a hurry for reasons I’ve already mentioned previously, so I wont bore you with them again, so sorry if I don’t go into great detail about installation procedures and key board commands for mot of the games. If you do have problems please post your queries in the forums, thanks. Please do enjoy the New Year and I hope you find at least a couple of games amongst the ones I’ve posted today that you’ll like. I highly recommend the first four, but especially the two GTA games and Beneath a Steel Sky. Cube 2 is good, but I have too many of the latest shooters such as Crysis and both of the last COD2 games , plus most others that have been released over the last three or four years, so I’m not as impressed as I would have been a few years ago. If you don’t have any FPS games I highly recommend it though.

======================================================================

The games I’m talking about are Grand Theft Auto I and II. Rockstar made them free to all a few years ago once the 3D side of the franchise became firmly established, though they never made the London expansion pack free (which I have from the original discs, hehe):

Grand Theft Auto I & II

I remember getting the first one and was fascinated with the whole game. There’s a multitude of cars you can snatch, either stationary ones, or by stopping ones on the road. You’ll also find secret areas where you can find a variety of weapons including rocket launchers and even a tank, which is great fun. There’s an overhead railway that you can hijack as well. The game is based around loads of missions, but you can just drive around and create mayhem if you wish. This is as good as any micro racer game in my opinion, and to be honest I’d still buy it if I had to. Though I did buy them all when they were released.

Beneath a Steel Sky: (71Mb)

There’s a free version available from one of the abandonware sites, but pavid told me about this a couple of weeks ago. This version has had the graphics enhanced so I thought it better to post this rather than the original (which is still fabulous. (anyone having problems getting it PM me for the alternative link). You do have to sign up for a news letter, but this can then be cancelled once you’ve got your free games. There’s two available from the site. (the second one I’ve mentioned below the three big ones (of which Steel Grey Sky is one)

Robert Foster is an innocent outsider stranded in a vast city where oppressed civilians live and work in soaring tower blocks... while the corrupt, covetous and rich lie underground, shielded from all pollution. Alone, save for a robot circuit board, Foster must fight for survival... and discover the sinister truth behind his abduction...

Paranoid population. Psychotic criminals. Power hungry corporation. Big Brother government. Haves and have nots.

In the not so impossible future. In the melting pot of Union City. All man's social problems are coming to a boil. Under the claustrophobic lid of a steel sky.

From the pit of the industrial level to the belly of commercial sector, to the spheres where the rich and powerful play. It's Man against Man. Man against Machine. Man against Time. In an urban hell only you can liberate... Maybe.

Gene Rally:

You require at least DX8 to play this game, though if you have XP installed you should already have it installed. If not you can download it for free from Microsoft. There’s a bunch of language files available which supports all the major languages and lots more.

THE GAME

GeneRally is a racing game for one to six players. You'll be racing on various tracks in time trial mode or against human and/or computer opponents in championship mode.

INSTALLATION:

Create a new folder, name it as GeneRally (or whatever you like) and extract contents of the .ZIP file, including all sub-folders, to the folder you just created. GeneRally requires DirectX8 (or newer) installed on your computer. Latest version DirectX is available on Microsoft's website at:

http://www.microsoft.com/directx

PLAYING THE GAME:

Use the slider on top to set the length of the races.

Select players from the drivers list on the right by clicking on the driver's name. The list will contain only one driver, when the game is launched for the first time. You may create new drivers by clicking the 'Create driver'-button under the list.

Selected players are listed in the list next to drivers list. On left to player's name you will see the name and picture of the car that player will use. Click on the car to select a different car for that player.

Available tracks are listed under the players list. Click on track name to select or unselect it. SHIFT and CONTROL keys can be used to ease the selection process.

Now you are ready to go. Click on 'Start' to begin the season.

Some keyboard commands used in the game:

ARROW keys Control the car (configurable)
ESCAPE In-game menu / Cancel / Exit

German programmer Poke 53280 has just released a freeware remake of the classic Commodore 64 game Turrican for the PC. The Metroid-esque title (that feels a lot like Contra at times) Hurrican is packed with vast, non-linear levels filled with weapons to find and swarms of enemies to use them on. The control scheme is a bit complex with several button combinations to memorize, but us old-school gamers are used to putting in effort to squeeze more fun out of our games. This is one of those infrequent freeware games that actually comes with a full installer that gives you the option of installing a shortcut to the desktop.

The Sewer Goblet:

A roguelike starring the Wu-Tang Clan. Choose one of the Wu and take them into the sewers to rescue the Wu-Tang baby from the clutches of the evil wizard.

Winning awards for the most absurd and, consequently, absurdly long name ever, The Sewer Goblet: The Wu-Tang Clan and the Wu-Tang Baby . Made by the talented developers behind Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden: Chapter 1 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa, that was posted yesterday. Sewer Goblet is a textbook rogue-like game. Where it differs is that instead of stereotypical fantasy settings, you play as a member of the Wu-Tang Clan in search of a mystical baby being held by an evil wizard underground. Yes, I know, it makes no sense. But if you like rogue-likes, it's definitely worth a look, as it's a hilarious take on the genre.

Heroine Iysayana:

This one was found by Albesir, who PM’ed me the link. Thanks Albesir - nice find.

In some multiverse there is a disk-like world called Byteria. It is home to many different people and bizarre creatures. Our story takes place in Súramir, a large continent where many different creatures use to live and give each other good thrashings. According to elven chronology, it's the year 9992 Lyr. Somewhere near the northeastern shore lies a town called Ashford, capital of a small kingdom of the same name.

Our title character is Iysayana, the only elf in Ashford. For her, life is nothing but a great party. She really doesn't think about anything else than bashes, boys and booze - until now, when the goddess Yw'nafob forces Iysayana to become a heroine. Now Iysayana has to bear the company of annoying people who actually think they could better the world. Their task is to save Ashford from the ominous Lord Shadmyr and find the lost King Magnus. During their adventures they discover a plot to fundamentally change the face of the world, using some really extreme methods ...

Heroine Iysayana is a Japanese-style role-playing game. Most of the time the game will be played in a 2-D perspective. This is where you walk around and explore the land, talk to people, visit shops, explore dungeons, search for treasures and so on. Whenever the party runs into monsters the game will change to a special turn-based combat screen. If you defeat your foes, your heroes will gain experience and money. At first Iysayana is on her own, but during the adventure other heroes will join your party. The different characters have different abilities, e. g. one may be a healer and another one a warrior, so make best use of them.

When characters have gained enough combat experience they will grow stronger and learn new magic. You can use spells to attack monsters, but also to heal or strengthen your characters. But note that your magic energy is limited and must be refilled from time to time. Talk to the people in the towns to gather more or less useful information. Take a rest in an inn to restore your characters' health. There are stores where you can buy and sell weapons and armors. Other items can be used to heal the heroes in mid-combat.

The game can be played using the keyboard or a joystick and comes with a detailed help file. You can save and load at any point. Go out and become the heroine the world needs!

Heroine Iysayana consists of three parts, and we strongly recommend to play them in order - everything else would just spoil the story. Windows 98 or higher is required.

Within a deep forest:

Within a Deep Forest is a freeware 2D platform game for Windows, that according to the author features challenging gameplay, beautiful music, an evil doctor, infinite cuteness, and a deep forest. I'd agree with some of those. It reminds me of another game called N-Ball; with very similar game play, though doesn't have the white neon like graphic og N-Ball. Great thing about this is that it's free. There are tutorial levela that introduce you to the keys that you will need to remeber. there's only the usual cursor keys for movement and a few others such as S for jump (why S I don't know ??? - spring maybe). there are also secret levels to unlock. There's an interesting intro to the game where the story is told via a cartoon depiction of a slideshow. I only played the game in windowed mode; but didn't notice whether you could play it in full screen. I don'yt usually play in windowed mode, but it didn't bother me in the least. the graphics were crisp and sharp unlike the fuzzy N--Ball (which I'm still tempted to buy, lol)

The Story:

Cloud:

Requires you to give a name and Email before the download link appears. If you don't like giving such details, someone posted a link to a site that generates temporary Emails that you can use for such games as these. I do suspect ulterior motives wwith respect to selling off your Emails when theya re asked for in situations like this as it is one way of generating cash; though I always use a disposable Email anyway, so once the spam get's too much I dump the address. Though that said, it could be totally innocent, or maybe a security measure to ensure robot downloaders are not at work.

Take to the skies and drag the clouds into puzzle-solving shapes. Very genteel. This wont appeal to many, but do check it out as it's very unusual. You never know, it may be the best game you've ever played. This is one of those infrequent freeware games that actually comes with a full installer that gives you the option of installing a shortcut to the desktop.

Harmotion:

I don’t normally include multiplayer only games in the project, but I actually really like this one, and it’s almost like you’re playing single player anyway because Harmonium is a massive online world, with bot AI included, so you can attac and score points from game controlled elements as opposed to having to play against other humans. If you don't like playing online then try Echoes which I've posted yesterday in another Week 16 thread.
