Right. It's the thing for all those people commenting "Uninstalled fine" or "Easy uninstall" in the main section.
Takes care of all kinds of unwanted registry entries, temp files, chat history or cookies - just restart pc and all is gonne.
Funky application changes all the icons on the desktop, associates all image files to it, - I guess that can go on endless.
However, I've been telling this to the IT guys at the company forever, to no avail. I guess they don't want to be without things to fix on the pc's ...

You reminded me Alex, I wanted to "third" that motion. I used a sort of sandbox type of program when I worked on '98, called Test-Run, which created a dummy registry for software testing. It was in the Windows Dos family, in other words, it stopped development after ME. These types of programs are ideal for testing software. You don't have to worry about "what will it do to my system?" just to test it.

Without a doubt I rate Returnil as the most useful software I ever got from GOTD. The current license is running out in May, so getting a free license for 2009 is great.
They do have a free version for personal use ...
It might be a bit tricky for some users, but hell, my son understands the concept pretty good and knows he needs to save his docs on a USB or the other partition.
I can test all the apps from GOTD that look interesting, but keep only the ones I really need. Returnil takes care of the rest. No need to uninstall ... great concept.
I have also played Saqarah for the xth time that way ... kind of extending the demo period. So, thanks for the post and the link
Pura vida, AlexSJ

Thanks, Simple. I'm going to track the last 3 giveaways in my Avanquest thread. We probably should clarify for folks that the Ghacker promotion is actually a daily drawing. They get so many free full licenses from the developer and raffle them off. You have to register and post a comment, but is doesn't have to be an intelligent one (yay!, I'm qualified!). As I can see, you could put blah, blah, blah and you'd be elligible for the drawing. Returnil has been the only one were the developer offered unlimited licenses.

Today's are WinSnap, a snapshot utility, and Window Space, a window manager that gives hotkey moving and resizing options as well as snapping options - snapping and locking a window into a preset place. Both are from a developer named ntwind and are also available for 64 bit systems.

I didn't know anything about Ghacks. The site manager's in Germany, though it's an English site, and it looks interesting. It includes a blog that practically daily has posts about freeware.

Thanks SimpleMinded! (nice moniker) :)

I just downloaded and will be anxiously awaiting my key, which should be sent to me sometime after January 2nd. BTW, here is the link to Ghacks Christmas Giveaway: Returnil Premium.

I bookmarked the Ghacks site too. It looks like a nice source of information. Thanks, again.

Sorry folks, know this post is way-late, unfortunately I've only stumbled upon the discovery not too long ago. Anyway, Returnil is a sandbox application. It creates a sandbox around your system. When this sandbox is enabled any changes made to the system are made within the sandbox. These changes have no effect on the underlying operating system and are not apparent when the sandbox is disabled. Returnil also creates a persistent virtual drive to store files while the sandbox is active.

Returnil is not for everyone as it requires a bit of tech savvy and many may not have a need for it. It however is very good for the developer and tester as it isolates possibly harmful effects and protects your system from damage as a result of something gone horribly wrong. It also very good for those like myself that evaluate lots of software with no intention of keeping it all : )
__________

The free license is available via a GHacks promotion, i.e. their GHack's Christmas Giveaway. Like the Avanquest Advent Calendar, free software licenses will be given away everyday up till Christmas. Unfotunately, most giveaways have been a first come first serve kind of deal and are therefore no long valid. The Returnil offer is available for everyone and expires beyond the Christmas day deadline, January 2, 2009 (HST/GMT-10/Hawaiian Standard Time) to be exact. Well if you are into this kind of thing be sure to get a license.

Yesterday's offer was Fast Picture Viewer. Which seems to be a very useful piece of software for those in need of a fast image viewer with features no professional photographer can do without. This too is a giveaway for everyone but time is of the essence. The offer expires on Monday at 10:00 UTC. The serial key provided will not register after that time.
