Yeah, my mom didn't really want me playing a lot of games when I was really young, so all me and my sister had was an original Nintendo system, and a few games with that(my favorite of those being McKids, if you remember that one). Then, the next system we got was a Nintendo 64. I remember how amazing I thought Super Mario 64 was, and I don't think I've played a better Mario game before or since.

Whiterabbit, Like usual, I've gotten DOSBox up and running again, so I'm sure I'll be messing around on it for a while until it reminds me why I keep getting rid of it. I saw the thread by the way, it seems like a good tutorial.

Thanks for the info on the Simutrans. I'll definitely give it a go myself.

Albesir, I grew up during the console age myself. It seemed like my parents kept my bro and sis one step behind the console wars. When every one had a commodore 64 I had Texas Instruments, when everyone atari I had activision, and when everyone had a nintendo I waited and got a used one, then they moved on to sega. It was all fun though. I remember having a hard time with Dragon's Lair, trying to adjust to the 3d graphics.

Sorry ya'll had to waddle through that muck I typed. I changed to a wireless keyboard and mouse and I kept miss stroking and having to backspace. Getting better now, though. I think I am going to have to go for a more expensive one with higher dpi. This walmart special just isnt going to get it. It has only one usb port for the KB and Mouse, so I thought I was saving a slot. Oh well live and learn.

Hi albesir,

I know what you mean about DOSBox, but since following the instructions that Wizzard gave for setting it up using a free version of Norton Commander, it's really easy to use, and I've been playing the DOS games much more since. Hopefully Wizzard will repost the DOSBox tutorial as a seperate post, but it can be found in week 8, 9 or 10's free weekdays games threads.

Regards

Hmm, in no particular order, since I can't choose favorites for more than a few days at a time:
Rise and Fall: Civilizations at War
Civ 1& 2
Final Fantasy: Endless Nova
Slam Soccer 2006
Also, I've played Darklands and Elder Scrolls: Arena before and I enjoy them too, I just get hung up on the whole dosbox thing sometimes. My favorite genres are strategy, simulation, sports, and rpgs.

Txnnok, I have to agree with you that I like better graphics. I guess growing up in the beginnings of the console wars and watching the improvements made each year has made me a little spoiled. I would definitely have games with better graphics, but there are almost no choices with great graphics like that when you're talking about free games.

Anyway, I enjoy most of the games I see here as well, and you guys deserve all the praise we can shower on you.

It looks like we have a lot of RTS and Simulation fans here at GOTD.

I will definitely be giving the Simutrans a look webmaster, thanks for the heads up on it. It looks very interesting. Perhaps you should make a separate post about it yourself, since you know more about it than I do. I know any and all games are appreciated in this community, not just our little weekday project.

I like
Star Racing
best to be particular. It has a very good 3D look to it. A rather interesting line of gameplay not found in your everyday games, that leans towards future style, which I'm usually not a fanatic about, but found this to be surprisingly interesting to say the least.
-Webmaster
Post Script, Try Simutrans, better than Sim City 2000, in my unbiased opinion, yet it's free, and here is the designated site of which I speak...
http://simutrans.sourceforge.net/
There also exists a wiki article about the above mentioned entertainment game, and that is this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simutrans
Please consider posting this, as I think all people will enjoy it, at least somewhat.

I like
Civilization I & II - Strategy or most like this
these here more preferable to me
1. Elder Scrolls: Arena
2. Warcraft: Orcs and Humans
Darklands - RPG
Final Fantasy:most are ok

My 15 year old kid loves games like the Sims
plus the doll games, food games, simple but fun ones.
If the graphics suck though, she won't waste her time for very long.
Can you get the sims for free. I have been looking at the the Sims 3 for a Christmas present, but a starter would be great.

I know a lot of people dont care about graphics as much, so long as it a fun game. I on the other hand care alot about graphics. I know alot of bandwidth can be wasted or seems like its wasted when focusing on graphics, but the way I look at it is. It is time to at least pay for a faster service. Most dont have to have to get the mopst offered by the their isp, like me, but come on it is time tp get with the times or get left behind.
I think alot more and better games could be offered if GGOAD or even GOAD, could be far better if the amount of of bandwidth wasnt always a consideration for dial up users. My point is offer the bigger stuff and if the dial up users can choose to take all day to download or upgrade.

Personally I've tried to post as many different genres of games as I've been able to find and have not used my own likes as the basis for posting games; (though I'm sure there's some influence there). Many of the games I've actually not particularly liked; but have posted them because I think if I was to post only those games that I liked, there would be major limitations in my choices posted, and many community members would not then benefit from the project. My advice to you is make a list of all the genres that you can think of and then proceed to look through the free game sites for games that will fit into those genres. Then you will be able to take turns at posting say for example a space shooter, then a puzzle game, maybe a match three, or a tile moving puzzle, then a point and click adventure, then a first person shooter, then maybe a strategy game etc etc........ Of course there are certain genres that are more popular than others, so there’s no reason not to post slightly more of that genre than the others. The main flaw in that idea is the availability of all the genres. Many of the games that are now free for example come from the mid 80’s and mid 90’s when certain genres were much more popular than others. So your going to find that there’s an inordinate number of certain types of games than others… well at least quality versions of those games.

All that said, it’s still a very interesting and useful exercise you’ve started. :)

The following are ‘some’ of the Criteria I use when choosing games to post in the project (though I’m sure some don’t measure up) and which include:

•	Game play elements
•	Interesting game play
•	Graphics (though this is not always an issue)
•	Replayability
•	Length of game play
•	Ease of installation
•	Unusual

And the following are some of the games I’ve really liked since posting games for the project. All of the following are now permanent fixtures on at least one of my computers and all have been backed up for future use as well. (In no particular order of preference).

I couldn’t just post three or four games as it all depends on what sort of mood I’m in as to what game I will play. Just as an example, I’d not played any Civilization game (despite having a few versions) for at least 10 years, but after discovering the original Civilization was free (my original copy which was on floppy disc became corrupted many years ago) I ordered the latest version which is Civilization IV plus expansion packs, and have played it virtually every day since buying it shortly after posting the free versions in these forums last month. Now I’m hooked again.

Risk - Strategy
Brix – Arcade - Puzzle - Strategy
Darklands - RPG
Plasma Pong – Arcade
Elder Scrolls I: Arena - RPG
Ocular Ink - Arcade
Civilization I & II - Strategy
POWball - Arkanoid - Arcade
Another World – Point & Click Adventure
Action Doom 2 – First Person Shooter
The Incredible Machine – Arcade - Puzzle
Lemmings – Arcade - Strategy
Gem Tower – Arcade – Match Three
Beatball – Arcade - Arkanoid
Hidden & Dangerous Deluxe - First Person Shooter

Hi, Great Wizz... Tho people usually have favorite genres, don't let that stop you guys from doing what you do best... offering whatever rings your bell. You may end up a fan of something you didn't know existed. I find them all interesting, at least to have a look-see, so keep on keepin' on.
Some of my favorites have been:

* The Lemmings Series. So good to see those lil green blokes again... tho couldn't get all to work.
* Final Fantasy: Endless Nova
* OnEscape
* Mahjong City, Infinity, etc. (tho I probably have enough of those...)
* Kings Quest 1&2
* Theseus-Return of the Hero
* Wabbit's 16 Crazybytes Games

...and some I've downloaded but haven't really played yet, so who knows. But thanks for caring, and thanks for sharing! You both have laid out a really nice buffet so far.

I've been thinking the past few days, and I decided that maybe I should try to find games that people are most interested in instead of what I believe to be a good game. If everyone could let me know what kind of game they would like to see offered from Whiterabbit or myself, I would appreciate it. Also, for fun, what have been your favorite games that we have offered so far? Here are mine:

1. Elder Scrolls: Arena
2. Warcraft: Orcs and Humans
3. Flipside of the Divine
4. Civilization 1 & 2
5. Star Racing
