*LOL* Thank you SO much for that notblocklox. You know EVERYTIME someone says "I didnt expect that" or something similar I think of the Monty Python sketch with the Spanish Inquisition:
or (better)

When uninstalling BTW.. dont forget ZSoft Uninstaller. I cant remember who told me about it, but it works better than the uninstall file included most times. Even gets rid of the 'saves' and such MOST times. Yes, it is freeware as well.

Anywho.. good luck Jode. That is why so many of us out here dont mind so much when we get a repeat game/program. I got a new computer and lost all that I got (except what WhiteRabbit, Wizzard, etc gives us) and now I have a more up to date.. so some I had to pass on I just wait and hope for again.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the installers use some form of embedded zip archive to install, or was installed directly from the downloaded archive without extracting first. windows would first have to extract this to a temporary file before executing the installation.

windows is not very good at automatically removing these temp files/folders sometimes. It's most likely completely harmless, and just an unfortunate bug.

Thanks for letting us know.

Jode,

There might be a way to do it, assuming you have a CD or DVD burner. Don't try to copy the original download file. Instead, go to wherever the program actually is. For example, if it's in C:\Program Files, go there. Copy the folder you want to save onto a backup disk. Put the backup disk into the new computer, and copy the folder to the original location (Program Files).

I did this recently when reformatting, and was able to save a couple of program I wouldn't have been able to activate if I'd tried to reinstall them from the original download. Good luck.

Carol

Jode, The giveaways are deliberately not intended to be copied from one computer to another. Each giveaway can only be installed within the giveaway 24 hours. However, from time to time old giveaways might be repeated (sometimes with an updated version), so this might be the opportunity you will need.

Can someone tell me how I can migrate the GOTD programs I have installed to the new computer I'm getting for Xmas? There are a couple I don't want to lose, but since there was a one-day-only registration password I fear I might. I'm not a techie, so if the answer is obvious, that's why I don't know it. Thanks.

Hey all....

If I got all the questions right . . .. :)

Like I wrote, they had the ZIP extension, but the little icon showed an Exclamation (!) instead of the regular zip icon.....and they wouldn't unzip.

Thanks for the advise, but I do have and use CCleaner on a regular basis.... didn't pick these up.

"Thanks for your reply Robert. Yes I know but he states "his TEMP folder" which makes me believe that he changes the installation route to it instead of the program files. Thats why I asked if he'd be more specific"

Yup...I do change the installation path.. I've got two hard drives, plus I don't want everything in Program files... But that wouldn't have anything to do with this...

BTW, the "Temp" folder isn't the same as the Windows Temp... I could name it anything like "whatever"

Just wanted to let you know about this, if anyone d/l'ed those two programs, do a search showing hidden files.......but to newbies, be careful! You can delete critical files - that's why thier hidden.... -

Archangel, yep that could be a possibility.
My guess is he downloads to the users temp folder and opens the file when the download is finished from his desktop.
And yes ,some programs have a messy installation routine.
There's only one way to find out...that is when he checks in again.
Have a good evening.

Most installers that are used by developers will remove the temp folder as you stated, thats why I asked for additional info.

Archangel

Hi.
Programs use your temp folder as a working space from which they install.
(even if you don't run them from there)
When unzipping files they get extracted to this folder too.
(unless you tell them not to use this folder-when using Winrar for instance)
When the installation is finished most programs clean up their temp files in the temp folder.

That's where CCleaner comes in to help you delete temp files that are left behind.

#Rogerwilco
Hi

The hidden feature of the Temp folder and it's contents is a default setting in Windows.
(In explorer-go to Tools-options-view to change this setting if you really wanna change this)
But I don't advice this setting. You may end up deleting crucial files in other folders...

So you see this not really something to be worried about.
Try using CCleaner on a regular basis or delete them files manually.
Emptying your temp file folder may also help you to speed up booting time.

What I don't understand in his post is he claims 200mb in a temp folder he created and just used the programs the day they were given away. He does state that there were others from other dl sites but doesn't say how many.

I use a downloader and remove the zip/rar file after installation. I let the program install where it wants which is in the program files (in case I want to keep it). If I want to uninstall, I usually use revo (good mention lox) but I also go back and sometimes have to remove files manually that may be left over. Never have I found a program that I had removed save additional info.

I hope he replies because there has to be some kind of mistake. (with files here anyway). Or some type of explanation as to what happened.

A bit ago, just to check, I clicked on the "Show Hidden/systems Files" on TotalCommander.

I was in my TEMP directory, where I put all the downloads. I don't run aything from there, which is important.
Surprise! I had four LARGE files that were hidden:
Penumbra.zip
Evernote.zip
But they didn't show up as regular ZIP files.
Both of these items I got from Giveaway of the day.

Both were installed, tried, and deleted the day I got em.

Yet, these were still on the hard drive. Good size ones too. over 200MB combined. No reason to be.

And they were Hidden.

Hmmm . . ...

Got a few more in that folder, but I'm not sure I got those here.

Anyway, Thought you should know about this
