hey, I forgot I have SAGA now....I guess I'm just not much into MMO games right now, and I haven't been able to get into any in almost a year. Anyway, I'm going to have to check that fileradar site some more, cause it seems to have links to a whole lot of demo and free full games. There's another one called gamesradar.com, and they look to have a similar thing going on. They also have a features section where someone writes articles about games, which I posted one earlier that was about free games. I saw another similar one earlier, but I forgot what it was and I didn't write it down. Those might be good places to check out, and you may even be able to find another few free games to post for the weekday game project. Also, there's a site kind of like that one called squakenet.com that seems to have links to abandonware games(found it when I was having trouble with Daggerfall last week), anyway thought you might be interested in those sites.

Thanks for the extra links guys. This is one great game for free. (Much better than SAGA in my opinion, though you don't get the growth of your cities while not plaing as you do with the prsistent world of SAGA.

Hey, I saw the link and checked the site out. It says that the download is only available to those with IP addresses in the US, so I thought I'd post this. I found a site that seems to have links to download games and demos, and even has rating systems for the links. It seems promising, since the rating system should show which sites are getting the better download speeds. Unfortunately, it might be hard to find free full games on there because they only have groups labeled demos, mods and patches; and any free full games are under demos it looks like. So, anyway, here's a link to Rise and Fall there, just click on the one that says free full game and you'll see all the different links.

http://www.fileradar.net/games/view/Rise--Fall-Civilizations-at-War/1793

The GamersHell link is included there, and there are 6 other links available as well.

Anyway, hope this helps.

I finally got it to dl as well. I am getting ready to do the install as well. I agree with albesir about some of the others. I am no limited on what I dl, but hate to use a lot of time if it wont go through. I guess it is just dependent on how busy they are at the time.

it took me 3 tries to download it, wasting about 7-8 hours since the download can't be resumed before it went all the way through(it took me over 3 hours to d/l on a cable modem). It was worth it though, as I think this may be my favorite of the free weekday series. It may be that the servers are a little crowded and it times out when there's too much traffic, but if you can suffer the wait, I recommend it. I don't really know of any solutions, since I'm not really much of an expert in that stuff, but I too wish it was able to resume the download. There were a couple other big downloads there I thought about trying out, but I don't know if another 12-15 hours of using up my connection is worth it for those.

Has anyone else had any trouble getting this to download? I have tried to do so several times. I am not sure if it is something on my end, a busy server there, or ????. I just got done trying for my 5th time and it downloads.. taking a good loooong time (3-6 hours each time)and a few hours into it... it stops and claims that it cannot download it. It doesnt support letting you 'resume' the download so I have to start over each time. I hesitate to start again now until I am sure what is going on.

I appreciate any info/help

Godo point about system specs. I'd forgotten to post it. Thanks Ornithos.

You can add NVIDIA 8600 and 8800 graphic cards to the list above as well. I've not got a 9800 card yet, but I presume they will work as well.

It was on the shelves a few years ago, so you're probably not mistaken. I've been playing it and am really impressed with it. I particularly like the hero figures you can create. they can run riot through enemy lines killing like a berserker and coming away unscathed. The sea battles are cool as well.

Though I now need to take a break from sorting games for the free weekday games thread. You wouldn't beleive how many games I've tested since I started the project three months ago. Rise and Fall is certainly one of the better ones to be posted.

I've got an interesting medly of games for Friday of which there should be something to please most community members (I hope)

I received Grand Theft Auto IV this morning and have only installed and checked to see if it runs so far and am determined to play it for a while before I go to bed. I also want to watch a Conan film (the second one with Grace Jones) that was on earlier in the evening, lol, so I'd better log off otherwise I'm not going to get to bed. It's already fast approaching 2am here in the UK.

No Problem here WhiteRabbit. I did download the demo first, but not a big deal. Probably if I wouldnt have been so excited about being able to get this game and jumping on the download so fast I would have seen that I was downloading a demo instead and looked into it. LOL. Anyway, I am downloading the full version now and looking forward to it.

I didnt know that (about the history behind this game). Maybe I was thinking of another game, but it did look kinda like this one. I am still excited and still very thankful to you for finding it.

Sorry, I forgot to remove the demo link to Softpedia. I hope I didn't cause anyone any inconvenience.

The game is definitely a totally free FULL version game.

As mentioned above in my first post, you do get a tiny advert that you'll only find while starting the game up and closing it down, {and not while you're actually playing the game; }. The adverts are just small panels cleverly fitted unobtrusively into spaces in the menus and there's no waiting for an advert to finish either; they are very unobtrusive and so far I've only come across images and no video adverts {like you get with some of the arcade style games}.

The Softpedia site haven't updated their pages yet, and it looks like most other download sites haven't either. I'd better delete the link before anyone downloads the demo rather than the full version because it is quite a substancial download. For those on dial up, it may be impractical to download, so I suggest (if possible) getting someone to download it for you. PM me if you're having problems. I'm thinking of contacting Midway to see if I can get permission to break it up into manageable chunks for the dial-up community; but I'm not making any promises that I'll be successful because many of these developers don't reply to queries such as mine; though I'm willing to try because the game is in the same category as Wings of War that was posted a few weeks ago, with respect to game play quality; that is, you wont get better for free and I want the whole community to share in this find. (for those who had problems downloading Wings of War, please PM me for solutions)

The game was originally developed by a software house that went bust. Midway picked up the pieces and eventually released Rise and Fall: Civilizations at War, which at the time of release was the most innovative of this genre. The game which is about five years old, is still an excellent game when comparing it to newer releases. I'm just getting back into this genre and have just repurchased {Cossacks Gold}, which was originally released about six years ago as seperate titles that are similar to Rise and Fall apart from the lack of a third person view. It cost me the equivalent of about $5 for Battle for Europe and Napoleonic Wars together, both of which retailed at around $40 each when they were originally released as expansions to Cossacks: The Art of War. One of the game distributors is releasing an anthology sometime soon that includes all three titles. I actually have The Art of War and Battle for Europe, but it's in Polish so it''s difficult to navigate around the menus, which are an important part of playing such strategy games (though not essential)

Hmmmmm... color me red.

mosweetie53: I was wrong. I havnt played it much, but it acted like it was the full download, but when it was finished it had "DEMO" at the end of the download. It offers to let you play the demo or a skirmish. So, I guess this is only a demo version. Sorry. Seems like a large download for a demo (imho).

WhiteRabbit: Do you know if this was suppose to be the full version? I still am going to give it a try and see what it will let me do and not do, but was wondering if it was suppose to be the full version and I did something wrong.

EDIT: **PLEASE READ** I just noticed when I was looking back through the download links that Gammershell says it is the "FULL VERSION" and the other link is only a demo. Though now I am looking at 1hour for the 2.44GB download of the full version over the 12-13 min I did for the demo. I will post more if this download isnt the full version.

WOW! Thank you WhiteRabbit! I can't believe this is a freebie. Honestly, I remember seeing this on shelves thinking about buying it at one time at a store where it was traded in. I think i didnt at the time because my computer couldnt handle it, but now with the newer one I can. Thought I would pass out the thanks while it was downloading since I know how bad I am about remembering once I am involved in the freebies you find us.

mosweetie53: It says it is free. I am downloading now and it hasnt asked for anything. I know that WhiteRabbit has sent us to this site for them before and there has never been any 'catches' to it. I think it is safe, but a BIG download. I know that with my free DAP (Download Accelerator Program) and my cable internet (?DSL?) it says 12-13 minutes. Just with dial up or such I think it would be a loooooong time.

Thanks again for all the freebies WhiteRabbit and Wizz!!!!!

Rise and Fall Civilizations at war:

Txnnock posted brief details about this game in a post last month, so I decided to follow up on it because otherwise it will become mired within the forums. In my opinion the free games from Midway have been well worth downloading (I actually purchased Full Spectrum Warriors a few years ago when it was the only squad based shooter around (released around 5 years ago before the Brothers in Arms Franchise that specialize in squad based shooters, though the Rainbow Six series, especially the War fighter series (I & II also use squad based tactics) . There is a very small amount of in game advertising, which is really nothing compared to some arcade distributors ideas about in game advertising. All I saw in today’s game was a small panel containing an advert for a mobile phone and the same one when I shut the game down. Hardly advertising in my opinion.

Rise & Fall: Civilizations at War was initially developed by Stainless Steel Studios who went bust a few years ago, so Midway took over the game and completed it. Rise & Fall: Civilizations at War is a detailed real-time strategy game that lets players completely command one of the four mightiest empires of the ancient world: Greece, Rome, Egypt, and Persia.

Rise & Fall is the first real-time strategy game to place players directly in the heart of combat as a heroic general fighting side-by-side with their troops as one of history's eight greatest heroes battling to bring victory to their nation on the battlefield. Only one nation will emerge from this conflict. You can play as a straight forwards top town strategy game or as a third person strategy game. The latter comes into it’s own when you play as a heroic general, who has seemingly superhuman powers See the videos below and you’ll see what I mean.

Here are some key features of "Rise & Fall: Civilizations At War:

• POWERFUL CIVILIZATIONS. Choose from four of the ancient world's mightiest empires: Persia, Greece, Egypt or Rome.

• REALISTIC UNITS AND WEAPONS. Enlist more than 80 unique units, including footmen, archers, cavalry, siege and massive triremes. Use realistically-scaled siege towers, ladders, and battering rams to annihilate city defenses and clear the way for ground forces.

• NAVAL COMBAT. For the first time ever in an RTS game, naval combat will play a large and vital role. Fight for control of the seas by boarding and ramming enemy naval vessels using massive, accurately-scaled warships. Outfit warships with infantry, archers, ballistae, or catapults, depending on the player's strategic objectives.

• HERO MODE. Engage in awe-inspiring feats of heroism by joining troops during climactic battles (from a third-person perspective) and personally impact the outcome. Control one of eight unique Heroes including Julius Caesar, Germanicus Caesar, Cleopatra, Ramses the Great, Achilles and Alexander the Great, each with special abilities and weapons.

• IMPROVE CIVILIZATIONS. Recruit craftsman, scientists, artisans, and advisors who will help enhance civilizations both militarily and economically. Capture new territories and establish outposts to increase your recruiting ability and train new formations of soldiers rapidly.

• TITAN 2.0. The Titan 2.0 engine is the industry's leading next-generation 3D engine designed specifically for RTS games. Titan 2.0 features dynamic lights and selfshadowing, a powerful particle engine, realistic terrain and water, and the ability to render thousands of units at once.

• MULTIPLAYER. Up to 8 players will battle it out across numerous multiplayer game types, including a team-based mode where one player manages resources while the other unleashes the full power of Hero mode against the enemy team.Only one nation will emerge from this conflict
