Another fun game along the same lines:

OpenTTD is an open source clone of the Microprose game "Transport Tycoon Deluxe", a popular game originally written by Chris Sawyer. It attempts to mimic the original game as closely as possible while extending it with new features.

grnnysews54, I don't know if this will help as I have not installed the DOSBox but I got this 2 days ago from Computeractive and it's free. It's called D-Fend Reloaded. I don't play too many of these types of games as I have arthritis in my fingers. Even the mouse gets to me after a while. But check it out....

Dos Box is a great way to play old games but having to learn all of the command prompts can be frustrating.

D-Fend Reloaded is a front end for Dos Box that stores all of the settings needed for games. Starting the game is then as simple as double-clicking on its entry in the games list..........

There are some useful installation options. The program settings can be kept in the program folder itself – the recommended setting for XP if all the users are adminstrators. Recognising that more users will have ordinary accounts without access rights to these folders, the default option saves settings in the user accounts Documents folder. Finally, the settings can be stored in the program folder as a portable application, ideal for taking games on a USB stick.

It even comes with Dos Box, so there is no need to install this software first, the Free Dos tools and Doszip Commander software for use with Dos Box.

So what I am thinking uninstall DOSBox and then setup D-Fend Reloaded because it has DOSBox in it..from what it says.

http://www.computeractive.co.uk/computeractive/downloads/2217128/fend-reloaded

Then here is a page with other games packages with free and shareware games to download...

http://dfendreloaded.sourceforge.net/Download.html#GamesPackages

Railroad Tycoon Deluxe is included in one of the packages and it is free.

This games are already preconfigurated to run with D-Fend Reloaded and DOSBox and can be installed with only 4 mouse clicks.

Maybe one of the guys that play these types of games will jump in here and really give you some pointers as I really don't have a clue.

PS I hope I haven't ruined any of WR's plans for new games by posting this.

I must be missing something crucial, I have no idea how to run this game. I extracted the zip, and since I've never used a DOSBox before have no clue what to do next. I cannot find an .exe file, and reading the 'readme's gives me nothing. Can someone fill me in? I'm running on XPSP2. Thanks!

Stephen, I love the tycoon games, but I am not really interested in this one. Just not for me I guess. I really do enjoy the roller coaster tycoon series. Anyways, is there any other tycoon game that you can try and get for me? There are SO many. Just pick one or a couple that you personally like and I'll give them a shot. Thanks for getting them, well if you have the time--dont stress yourself over it plz

ornithos is exactly correct. The patch is intended for the newer "Sid Meyer's Railroads!". As an owner of Railroads I, II & III and Railroads!, I have played all of these and they are some of my favorite games. Railroads I (the free one mentioned here) is pretty dated now, but was a good game in it's day. I played through all of the scenarios of II again within the last couple of years and still enjoyed this great game. III is currently my favorite as it has the best graphics and is probably the most realistic. Railroads! was a significant disappointment for me.

Hi Stephen and SpodoCommodo,

I just had a quick look on the 2K site and I believe that there is some confusion going on here. The way I see it is that 2K is giving away Railroad Tycoon free to mark the introduction of the new Railroads game. As such the patch mentioned is intented for the Railroads game and not for Railroad Tycoon.

This would explain the entirely logical error message:

"The setup has detected that no version of Sid Meier's Railroads! is installed.
This update requires that a previous version of the application be installed."

I hope this clears up any confusion.

Regards,

SB

Thanks for the link.

However, having installed the game itself (and it runs ok), when I try to run the Patch 1.10 executable it fails with the error message:

"The setup has detected that no version of Sid Meier's Railroads! is installed.

I’ve had to post Friday's game a day early because I will be offline for a few days trying to repair my wireless router. I spent over $300 on a 'n standard system together with wireless cards for three of my computers, but haven’t been able to get them to work for months, so have been relying upon a cable strewn across the house, which apart from only allowing me to connect one computer at a time to the internet, is a pain, unsightly and also creates a risk to the children (through tripping); so I’ve decided to knuckle under and get it fixed up. Hopefully I’ll be back in time for this weekends game giveaways. If I don’t post any reviews you’ll know why. :(

Anyway, here’s a great game. I didn’t realize that it had actually been posted previously on these forums by Haalam and later by K8undeadfox, but the posts are just about buried now, so I decided to continue with the posting.

Railroad Tycoon with patch: (14.2Mb and 21Mb)

For the first time ever, the classic simulation game Railroad Tycoon is a completely free download!

With the recent return of Sid Meier to the Railroad Tycoon franchise, 2K games has decided to give away the wonderful original that started it all.

You'll start with a small (but respectable) amount of seed money. Combine that with your railroad business savvy and you'll soon become the greatest tycoon that the railroad industry has ever seen!

And as your cartel and buying power grows, you'll be able to play the stock market, pushing your competitors out of the way with buyouts or engaging them in all-out price wars! All in all, you'll have to be mighty resourceful and shrewd to become the next Railroad Tycoon.

So, download this classic for free and see if you can retire as a great railroad mogul!
