Quantum, my webhost sidekick is a big Chrome proponent. I'll bounce your link to WorldBrowser off his fat head and see what rebounds.
Every time I admit I'm still with IE (since around 1992-ish) despite it's notorious problems, a rabid FF supporter here has a hissyfit, so I won't say it. (oops)
I concur with your comment about FF and older Dells. Have to use FF for a couple sites, but darned if my patience isn't tested during the ridiculously lonnnnng time (okay, 7 seconds but that's a lifetime these days) it takes to launch and crank up to speed. Between that and endless add-ons and the nuisance of having to handcraft shortcuts that'll launch from my desktop folders, it's just not making the grade.

"When did you try Firefox?"

Webmaster, if you were asking *me* that, it was pretty recently that I tried it - version 3, I believe it is. I guess it's just a matter of habit and comfort that we use IE. Our first computers came with it, so we used it - didn't know any different, back then. My newer Compaq came with it, as did my older son's laptop. We've been using IE for 9 years now. Not saying that anything is wrong with Firefox, but just that we are more comfortable with IE.

Hello Webmaster,

First I'll direct you to my response at http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/3503#post-35769 so as not to repeat everything here and take too much of everybody's time.

Since that post, I have started using Chrome (Keeping it updated under Dev Channel with the Chrome Channel Switcher) available at http://chromium.googlecode.com/files/chromechannel-1.0.exe , updated Opera to 9.6, updated Firefox to the latest (both on my USB key and my hard drive).

As you can see, I have time to be on the bleeding edge (I'm retired!)

I like using different browsers for different ways to surf and they all have some issues.

Using Firefox drains memory quickly on my older Dell Dimension that is limited at 1 Gig of RAM, I have to use Ramboost to free memory that is made prisoner after 1 hour of use.

IE (my version is at 7) is a big chunky and sometimes slow browser that I dislike using for too long (After 45 minutes, I use Ramboost to free the prisoners there too!)

But I recently found a gem that lets me use the Native IE Engine (Trident) in a small fast program, that gem is called TheWorld Browser ( http://www.ioage.com/en/index.htm ).

In a month's normal use for me ( read heavy use ... LOL ), I have yet to crash it or drain too much memory.

Ciao

QD

FF is the best so far. The web developer extension alone puts it well above the rest. So I hope you didn't take offense.

Chrome now has a greasemetal extension that is basically what greasemonkey is to firefox as it runs most of the same scripts.

To choose between firefox and IE, I think I am with you. FF3 still has a few bugs to work out, but firefox is by far the more customizable, and extendable. IE7 is almost equally standards compliant (something past versions can't boast), and ,since it is still embedded into Windows, it is a decently reliable choice.

The major difference in the two is that FF is open source, and as such fixes and security patches are made available much more quickly. FF is also much more easily fitted to a particular user.

Oh yes. Chrome is very, very, good; or will be, at least.
Still, FF, is good too, and so is IE7! But you should see all the add-ons on FF!
Still, that's not a reason to want a browser. I suppose IE7, and FF, are both just as good.

i mainly use firefox, but ie7 is far better than ie has been for several versions.

The thing about security is sort of overblown. In reality firefox is more secure in much the way a mac is more secure than a pc. It's not so much a function of features as it is a result of the number of users. Terrorists release a virus at an airport, not a sci-fi convention. Virus writers code for ie exploits, and not firefox. sure there's other aspects, but given motivation everything has an exploit.

that being said, i find myself using chrome a lot more for day to day tasks like email, and as extensions and themes are becoming available it is getting better and better. The thing i like best is the speed. The application shortcuts are very nice for opening email or other online items as an application.

I'm also kinda groovin on the fact that each tab opens in a new process, so if one poops out the whole session isn't lost. both firefox and chrome use the same malicious site database for protection.

Though I've always heard that Firefox is better - more secure - and I have tried it a couple of times, I've always used IE, and likely always will. I even tried Netscape a few years ago, but eventually made my way back to IE. The last time I tried Firefox, I used it only on one of our computers, which only my son and I use because it has an old CRT monitor and other family members can't read things on it anymore. My son said he didn't like the Firefox; I was kind of vascillating on it myself, so I said fine, and uninstalled it. Now, it's just IE on both computers.

No problem Webmaster, just trying to help....and here's another one that I started 'earlier, lol :)

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/3503

That's one of the problems with these forums. Everything tends to get buried eventually. I remember posting it, but using the search engine didn't bring up anything, I had to look through every page until I found the posts. I just thought I'd add them to this post to make it more complete.

I'm still using IE7 despite being tempted to try firefox again. I used it several years ago, but had problems with it so reverted back to IE and can't be bothered re-trying it. I'm happy with whjat I've got. I use my computers to play games and write stuff. Internet browsing is only a small part of what I use the computer for, so which ever is unimportant to me. So long as it works...that's what matters and IE works for me. (I like the firefox logo, lol)

regards

Well, i used to use Mozilla Firefox more because i was having trouble with Adobe's Flash Player 9 in Internet Explorer. It would always freeze on a page with flash content and say "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem with flash9e.ocx and needs to close." However, Adobe released Flash Player 10 and it works fine with IE. It no longer crashes at all. But I still use Firefox sometimes to because of the great add-ons.
