I nearly added this to my next lot of free games, but then remebered i'd posted it as an extra last year. I though it deserved to be brought back to the front page as i'm sure thereare loads of newcomers to the forums. (Well I hope so.

Next week I'll be posting a 'special' to celebrate more than one year of this project. I'd meant to do it on the anniversary, but my mind was elsewhere. anyway, better late than never. Some of the games I've already mentioned in previous posts, but not the free games project, and they were posted together with many other games when I used to post genre specific threads instead of this free games project.

I'm tempted to tell you what games you can expect, but instead I'll say ones a squad based shooter, ones an excellent r.t.s. game, and another space shooter that was originally a commercial title, though it's not Universal Combat, plus a few more excellent games. Should be a fruitful week.

NP Deserthead47. My profile says member for a week, but like most I was around downloading the giveaways for a a good six months as for the forums I didn't start reading them till about a month ago when I started thinking how I could give back. I think I read a post on the download page that had a link to a game or something that lead me here.

Did ya'll notice the crazy keyboard layout for Area51? I don't think anyone could enjoy that default layout. Which leads me to my real question. Do any of ya'll know a good program for game controller? Alot of these games do not even give an option. I know they make them and I could google, but a good tried and true one is always better.
Does xfire do that? I'll have to check tomorrow.

Unfortunatly I have a lot of spare time due to early retirement{medical}, and like yourself find that dissapearing into a game for a few hours helps pain management. The last 5 years have been spent looking around for free games, and now have a decent computer to be able to play them.Have found and lost a few that I was unable to play on previous machine. visiting this site for a couple of years has been a daily ritual, something interesting usoally turns up.Got to head off now,Psi-Ops needs testing.
Again thanks.
PS also thanks to Txnnok for link to Area 51 etc.

Hi Brian, I have War on Folvos, though I've not played it much recently. There are too many games to play, lol. I was quite a games buff before my accident, but when I discovered that playing games helped with respect to pain management I went mad and started buying everything I fancied, which has resulted in a very large library of games. I play hours every day, especially during the week when the kids are at school. I've not actually finished any games I've bought since I completed the third in the Medal of Honor series well over three years ago. I seem to have become addicted to them rather than the morphine that is supposed to help. I've only this week taken delivery of 12 DVD based game sand already I've got four more on order (both Fallout 3 and Empire Total War on pre-order and both the NeverWinter nights titles, which I've decided to buy after getting back into Oblivion) Will I ever be satisfied?

As for Psi-Op's with respect to it crashing; have you tried defragging your hard drive? Sometimes, if your hard drive is badly fragmented, installing such a large game as Psi ops will result in it being scattered all over the disc; so, when it comes to playing it, there's a higher risk of it crashing. I'm sure you already know such fixes, but thought I'd mention it just in case. Also try updating your graphics drivers.

With respect to other games similar to today’s giveaway, try the one I posted called Shadowflare. I think it's much better than today's giveaway:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/3981

There are a couple more but I'm saving those for the weekday game project, so you'll have to keep an eye out for them. I will probably be towards the end of the month when I next post one. I've already mapped out what I'm posting for the next few months, but new discoveries keep making me update that.

Hi Deserthead. Yeah, I know what you mean with respect to time. I have lots, but it’s still not enough, lol. I’ve got another reasonably decent FPS game though it’s only about 850Mb as opposed to Psi-ops 2.4Gb. I’ll be posting that next month unless someone posts it in between now and then. :) All the games I post are easily found if you have the time to spend digging for a little time. Thankfully I know several download sites as well that have some good games. If you ever want to dig for yourself, you can easily back track on many of the links I give for the game downloads, which will then bring you to lists of excellent games.

Hey, Whiterabbit,

I have PsiOps and I was playing last night on Windows XP SP2 with 1.43 GB Ram and 512 MB nVidia video card, but it kept crashing. I was able to start from my last save point, but if I played for awhile without saving, it would crash and I'd have to start back from the last save point...AGAIN. I was about to uninstall it, but I think what I need to do is just save constantly so that if it crashes, I won't have to redo things all the time. Saving a lot can get annoying, but it's more annoying and frustrating redoing everything all the time. Another annoying thing about PsiOps is when you start it up and have to wait until their ad window finishes before you can do anything at all. I like to get right into a game, but I guess with free games, ads are sometimes part of the deal for playing them for free.

One game I have been playing the last few days is called War on Folvos, which you can find here:

http://www.reflexive.com/WarOnFolvos.html

It's a turn-based strategy game and I love this type of game. It reminds me of a SegaCD game I played years ago called Dark Wizard:

http://www.mobygames.com/game/dark-wizard

As the most knowledgeable gamer I know of, do you know of any similar games to these? Free would be preferable, but any would be great. I'm assuming today's game giveaway might be one such game, but my computer doesn't have the best luck with "Some Company".

I realize you may have given a list of these types of games already, but there are so many to go through, I don't always have time to read everything. I'd appreciate anything you can give me.

Hi Txnnock. I've actually got a lot more than what you suggest. Each of my computers has a minimum of a Tetra byte divided up between several sizes of hard disc, the smallest being 320Gb and the largest 750Gb. (My main gaming computer has 1.5Tb of disc space. I've just bought another 750Gb for this computer because I intend to copy all of my photographs onto that disc (I expect those to fill about half of the disc) and the rest I'll use for editing my family video's). I became obsessed with upgrading all my computers about three years ago when I started to spend a lot more time working and playing on them. I got fed up of juggling my files and games around; deleting such and such to make room for that and moving another for something else etc. I thought the best solution was to buy bigger drives. Something I don't regret. I've been lucky enough to be able to afford to buy all I have as I'm sure there are those that cannot afford to upgrade as easily. I also use a couple of 500Gb external drives that I could not do without anymore.

I gonna have to get another hard drive. I'm down to 8 gigs on this partition from all the downloading and installing. This drive has more, but I have it divvied up vista on 100gigs, xp & ubuntu on 70gigs.70g for backup, and 2g for restore. The remaining 8 gigs goes to the Hard Drive Fairy, wherever she's hiding at.

How many HD do you have, Rabbit? I'd bet on at least 2-250gigs plus a external one(no guess).

I was going to post this as part of the 'free games for the week day' project, but decided it was too big a download for many who come here (at over 2Gb), it's probably out of the scope of those on dial up. Still, if you can take the time to download this game, it's well worth it. You can play it in the first or third person if you wish. Anyway, I'm not going to rant on (though I have posted a review from Gamespy). There's also some video links for you to check the game out. I thought it was great for free.

Psi-Ops – The Mindgate Conspiracy: (2.45Gb)

In Psi-Ops your most powerful weapon is your mind. In addition to traditional weapons, gamers will use psychic powers like Telekenisis and Mind Drain as they battle against an army of brainwashed terrorist super soldiers and powerful Psi agents.

Quote from GameSpy:

We've all imagined what it would be like to have psychic powers. Think of how nice it would be to take over your boss' body and give yourself a raise. Imagine being able to open your fridge and grab yourself a drink without having to get off the couch. Got a crush on your neighbor? Just leave your body behind and float through the wall for a little peepshow. Of course, not everyone would use their psychic powers to become a lazy, well-paid pervert, which is why Midway has brought us Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy.

Originally titled ESPionage (thankfully it was changed), Psi-Ops puts you in the shoes of Nick Scryer, an elite operative for the government's Mindgate program. A collective of powerful psychics, the Mindgate group performed a variety of shadowy deeds for our nation. The group's leader, a megalomaniac known only as The General, has decided that he'd rather rule the world than save it, so he takes some of Mindgate's most powerful psychics (including your former mentor, Barrett) and starts a terrorist group called The Movement. It's up to Nick to save the day, and his adventure will take him all over the world, from Hong Kong to the Himalayas.

As the game starts, cinematics show Nick having his mind wiped clean, so The Movement's powerful psychics won't know he's coming after them. Unfortunately, this also takes away Nick's memories of his powers, so he's quickly captured and thrown in a cell, which is where the player takes over. Armed only with a gun and his wits, Nick must escape from the prison, while trying to remember how to use his powers.

From the moment the gameplay begins, Nick is thrust into the action. There are usually a few different ways to make your way past enemies. You can choose to quietly sneak from crate to crate, biding your time until you can make a dash for the door, or you can stealthily surprise a guard from behind, knocking him out before he can alert his buddies. Of course, the easiest way to take care of guards is with a well-placed bullet, although that will bring his compatriots running to join the fight. While Psi-Ops has some stealth elements, I found that it was more worthwhile (and satisfying) to simply kill any guards that I came across.

The most important, and coolest, element of the game is Nick's psionic abilities. His powers are returned to him gradually and in an interesting fashion. Rather than simply getting the powers and using them, Nick has flashbacks to his training with Barrett, in which he's instructed on the uses of the abilities, then is run through an obstacle course of sorts. This was a good way to introduce the powers, and it also allows the player to use them in mock combat situations.

The first (and most useful) power is telekinesis. Nick is able to target any object or enemy with his mind, lift them into the air, then toss them aside like yesterday's news. There are a lot of sections in the game where you have to use your telekinesis to solve puzzles, stack crates, or reach higher levels by climbing onto a box and levitating it under your feet. It's in battle that telekinesis really proves its worth, though. You can target an enemy, lift him off his feet, then brutally slam him against a wall or into other enemies. Smashing him into a wall will result in a sickening thud, a splash of blood, and one very dead terrorist.
