I'm constantly playing HOG games and upon the advice of several of you I discontinued McAfee when the subscription ran out .. totally deleted it, and now have Comodo installed for free which is both an AV and a firewall. It doesn't bother any of my HOG games except to give me a prompt the first time I play one and I simply check "treat this as an installation" and everything runs fine.

Campy, I may be misunderstanding you (and, after a sleepless night, I probably have), but it sounds to me like you have tried to get in on a deal after the offer had expired. With, I believe, one exception, every offer I have received/heard of was a good and valid one, i.e., the ones Big Fish Games offers through freestufftimes. In fact I just went over there to see if that game is offered there, but it's not. There are a few other Hidden Expedition games there, though, i.e. Everest.

Norton used to be jam-up....years ago. What happened to it? My oldest son's computer came with it - back in 1999 - and it did fine until the subscription expired, and we couldn't get the updates anymore. Some kind of virus got a hold of it, and we wound up losing the computer. Now mind you, this was before I learned about computers, and could repair ours. If I had known back then what I know now, we probably would have had it longer, if not still. 'Course the computer he had was a basic non-upgradeable Gateway. I'm not cracking on Gateway computers, but just letting you all know the particular type of Gateway computer he had. I think Gateways are pretty good, considering we still have, and use, the one my husband bought back in February, 2000. I am currently running McAfee on that one. I've got the Norton (software) running on my 3-ish year old Compaq.

Sue, OMG, Not Norton. That is the worst. It totally ruined my last pc. It was horrible. I actually had attempted to upgrade it and it went beserk and I was not able to uninstall it no matter what I did. Had several techies try and help me also and nothing worked. The only good thing was that it was an old pc and I was going to get a new one, Norton just hastened the process. I never went through the installation of Norton on the new pc, just got rid of it totally. I do use Zone Alarm and have not had any problems. Crossed fingers.......LOL Good luck......

Dragonlair, the only reason I put Norton on here, really, was just to give it another try. I WAS going to reinstall McAfee, but figured I'd try Norton, first. Perhaps I'd be better off just uninstalling Norton, and just go ahead and put McAfee back on here. I don't recall McAfee disrupting my games like AVG and Avast do. The only bad thing about McAfee is I keep getting this (non-intrusive) taskbar alert notifying me my computer may be/is not fully protected, and then having to go through the rigamaroll of fixes.

Sue,

BE CAREFUL! Norton has a terrible reputation of grabbing resources and NOT letting go! I have heard of people having to do a "destructive restore" (factory) to get Norton OUT, especially if it is allow to "expire".

As is common, my computer was installed with this 30 day trial of Norton and one of the first things I did was UNINSTALL Norton. At that time, I was using AVG but I have since given them up as a resource hog.

Under AVG the win-music for Everett Kaser's Greek Squares game kept turning itself off!

I now use Avira Personal (free) and have no more problems. The latest version is a little quirky to get it to "obey" your personal settings but it otherwise works will with a small footprint.

Gram, maybe it's not the AVG or Avast that is the problem, afterall. It could be the firewall I'm using - well, WAS using (Zone Alarm). I just uninstalled both, and downloaded/installed the Norton Internet Security 2009 30 day free trial.

RosnSC, I also have AVG and have not gotten any update reports disrupting my game playing. I don't know what to tell you. I had McAfee free from my ISP then they wanted to charge me for it so I switched to AVG. I also run Spyware Blaster, Zone Alarm and Ccleaner. Have been playing The Secret of Margrave Manor all day today and still have not finished the game. Going to switch to Sherlock Holmes now. Actually like it better as it has a story to it.

Gram, I got what you are saying. Last night, I did try to download 2 different games from freeridegames. I could not download them; got negative security messages. 'Course, then again, it could just be my antivirus program, Avast, which I just recently switched to from, AVG, which did allow me to download said software. I switched antivirus programs because AVG update reports were disrupting my game playing. Heck, Avast does that, too, and much more than AVG did. I'm thinking of going back to McAfee, which I can get for free from my ISP.

RosnSC, Merri, delenn13, As delenn13 says it is whatever you are comfortable with. I am comfortable playing the games.

When I bring the site up to play the games there is a message: "Say thanks to our sponsors", but again there aren't any ads. When I bring the games up to play the left side of my screen is a blank white box, on the bottom again there is a small banner saying "Sponsors", below that is a blank white box. I have never encountered any ads. I am currently playing The Secret of Margrave Manor, which I thought I finished but it continued and I have 90% items collected, still have probably about 1 week maybe 2 of playing before I am done and will then delete it as I did with Dream Chronicles. Also playing The Lost Cases of Sherlock Holmes which as you solve the cases they get more difficult. There is a 30 minute time limit to solve the cases. Anyway just wanted to let you know.

Is it possible the site has cleaned up its act and is still getting a bad rap? Not for me to say. I will continue to use the site as I do enjoy their games and have not had any adverse effects to my pc.

delenn13, Merri, RosnSC I certainly would not post a site if I had not used it for several months. I have been using freeride games for over 4 months now without any adverse effects to my computer. My virus protection, spyware and firewall are all up to date.

As for the side bar having ads, I play the games offline and the sidebar is blank, so, no, I do not have any ads while playing the games. I play approximately 2 hours a day sometimes longer.

I also have not gotten any more spam than I normally get. Maybe 4 a day, which I do not think is a lot.

For now I will continue to use the site. As for WOT there are a few comments that say the site is OK. I guess it depends on what you have installed on your computer to protect it.

BTW, Merri, speaking of Big Fish games, did you all get their email announcing their new price on all their games. They are all $6.99 each, now, instead of $19.99. Heck, at that price, I might just be able to afford to *buy* some of the games I now subject myself to ads for...(chuckle).

Sue - hoping the other games suppliers will do the same with their prices...:D

Yes,it sounds like the ads run continuously in a sidebar(according to one user in the WOT opinion site) and yes they use a game manager.

Of course so does Bigfish but we have discussed the pros and cons of game managers a few times here...lol.
One user got a bad virus but the others simply said that there was lots of spyware...
Ugh!

Oh yes email addies and any other files that the manager decides to rummage around in while "visiting" your computer...
:(

Found this http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/4816#post-51400 If WR won't go there, then I am not. Found other references to the site also. They all said something about ad-supported games and a game manager. I don't know.

As to what they are getting from the user??? How about an email addy, and any other info that you fill out. Spammers pay for that info.

delenn13..
Yes it doesn't seem a wholesome site to visit; the access to ones' computer sounds pretty outrageous.
That is the trouble they don't show ads so WHAT are they getting from the user???
:(

I tried to go there and Internet Security | WOT Web of Trust gave it a BIG black and red screen with ALL red ratings. I usually use WOT as a guide but with game sites...I usually don't take chances. So I didn't even try to go. No game is worth it.

Make sure you use EULAlyzer® if you download a game. It might be interesting to see what is in there..... since Merri found that other interesting part in another EULA which really should raise some doubts and fears.
Merri, you are correct. Pretty scary! Sounds like they can go "in and out" of your PC as they wish.

Hi Merrie, NO.........No ads. You need to download a portion of the game and as you play it it automatically downloads. It takes sometimes several days to play a game, when I am done I just delete it and play another. I truly love the site....
