Hey all..

I was browsing through the forum and came across this thread. I dont know if this info is helpful to any of you anymore but thought I would pass it on. Ginger (regular, candied, crystallized, etc)is really good for nausea as well. They sell it in suckers (lollipops), lozenges, teas, etc for people. I too am disabled and try to find more natural ways to deal with stuff (trying to avoid side affects mostly)and I found out about this long before I became disabled. It happen to stick in my head from when I was a phlebotomist (worked in the lab drawing blood, preparing lab samples, and assisting in autopsies) and worked in the CTS (cancer treatment center). Many of the people on chemo said it was the best thing ever for their nausea. Many said they would just buy the candied or crystallized ginger (it comes in small pieces when you buy it; usually) and they would just put it in their mouth and let it melt. Some swore that if you put it under your tongue it worked better and others said between your cheek and gum, but I didnt notice it working better than the other in either way. It does work well and without the side effects of the meds. WARNING it does have a very strong flavor that will stick in your mouth. It is for that reason that I do recommend small pieces and to use the candied or crystallized over straight. Also, the teas work well if the flavor is too potent to use straight out.

I've got a replacement for the rubbing alchol(-ether instead). JK though, It would work, but it could end up killing you if you falls asleep with the rag over face. I know guy far worse off than me and he uses crackers for the nausea and has for the the past 15 years.

Please don't ake me seriously about the ethr, I was just kidding around, its not worth the price you pay to your body to do it. And no I never have, the closest I've seen to ethr is starting fluid and I htink ya'll all now what means a s replacement.

Stephen , Get the Doc to wright you phenigran instead of that other. I love Phenigran.Don't get the rear entry ones make sure they are edible. Like I said in post, if it doesn't get rid of the nausea

Stephen, I had to laugh when you mentioned putting oils on light bulbs. I still have some of those teensy bottles. BUT, for your laugh for the day, I learned the hard way you do NOT put oil on an already burning hot lightbulb! Egads!!

Thanks again ladies. All are worth trying, if only to stop the darned nausea, which seems to be happening more and more each day. I’ve even tried dropping the dose of my opiates by 5Mg, but that hasn’t helped. .

I still have bottles and bottles of essential oils because we were into it in a big way years ago. I used to put oils everywhere (such as on light bulbs and special holders that hung over radiators, so when the central heating or lights were turned on, you’d get the essential oils giving off increased amounts of fragrance - it was probably overpowering to visitors, but we were so used to them we didn't notice) Though the main use was for meditation and massage. However since the IRA bomb, which blew up the Corn Exchange in Manchester where I used to buy most of my oils from, I've not bought many. Also, as I wasn't an expert, but knew that some oils were dangerous to pregnant women, we stopped using them just as soon as Michelle became pregnant the first time. We never got back into using them. It's amazing how long some oils last. Though all the common ones such as peppermint oil, chamomile, tea tree and lavender have long since gone. There's nowhere nearby that sells oils unfortunately. I even bought a distillation apparatus with a view to getting my own oils from the various plants that grow wild hereabouts. (Originally I had to do it as an exercise when doing first year undergraduate chemistry at uni’)

I agree with you both that it’s probably the overpowering smells that work. I’d forgotten the power of nature.

Regards

Stephen

Gee hamstergirl.. I'd forgotten about the saltines with morning sickness. They sure did help when feeling 'green'. Boy, I sure ate a LOT of those with 4 kids! But, I think you hit it on the head, regarding the alcohol.. it's not that smell particularly, it's any strong odor like the peppermint oil.

Stephen - here's my 2 cents on the nausea thing - I nursed my last roommate thru cancer. She was already very ill and bedridden before the diagnosis and nausea was a big part of it - I would give her cotton balls soaked in essential oils in one of those little self - zipping kind of plastic bags used for coins - lavender in one, and peppermint oil in the other. That way she would have them right there and ready to go when she needed it. When she got nauseous, she would open one, and inhale from it for a minute or two. (I'm Wiccan, and we were trying all kinds of alternative approaches to illness) and she said it helped immensely. It sounds a little like copmom's explanation of the alcohol - peppermint oil is pretty strong. The other thing to do is keep some dry crackers, or melba toast by the bed. When you wake up, DON'T sit up, just reach over, grab a couple crackers, and eat them. Wait a minute and then get up - this is an old trick for morning sickness, LOL, but hey, nausea is nausea, right (now stop laughing...if you can ;) ) and I can vouch that it worked for me...

Hi Copmon,

I don't know - lol.

I think it's because I enjoy playing them so much. Before computer games were available back in the 70’s, I used to play lots of board games such as Backgammon, Chess, Mahjongg, Monopoly and Risk (to name just a few), and when the role playing games called Dungeons and Dragons and later the easier to play Tunnels and Trolls phenomena hit the UK (around 1978-79), a group of friends and I used to gather at my home and play virtually all weekend. I'd think nothing of spending weeks designing a dungeon for my friends to explore. We used to take turns at being Dungeon Master.

As for remembering so many games; I can't explain it. I seem to have a knack for remembering such things, yet ask me where I put yesterdays post or my house keys and I’ll have great difficulty in remembering. I reckon it's simply because I enjoy playing them so much, and since my accident, playing games on the computer has become an alternative analgesic to the opiates I take, and helps with my pain management just as much as the drugs do. It's a similar story with my main hobby photography, which until my accident had ‘nearly’ always been a passion. If you ask me about any photograph I've ever taken (well almost) I could easily point out exactly where I took it, even 40 or more years ago using Google Earth, (I've had a camera since I was 8 years old thanks to my grandfather, who gave me a kodak camera to start with. It even had a built in light meter, which was brilliant - I then went onto the Russian Zenit, then Pentax cameras{my favorite was the Pentax MX}, except for a twin lens reflex, that I used when I worked briefly as a wedding photorapher back in the late 70's). I could even give you some back ground as to why I took the picture, whether I’d planned it in advance - which I used to do all the time - I'd think nothing of getting up at some unearthly hour and cycling to a particular spot, sometimes 15 to 20 miles from home, just to get a sunrise at a particular spot, because I'd surmised that the lighting would improve the photo if I took it at a particular time of year. I was always interested in the effects the time of year had on lighting, and ultimately it's effect on the subject matter. I also used to love night photography. The last time I went out specifically at night (several years ago) was to try and catch some lightning during a big thunderstorm. I sat in the middle of a field in torrential rain for three hours waiting for a good shot, which I kept missing, lol.

txnnok.. I picked up that breathing rubbing alcohol tip from my brother. He's an anesthesiologist. He said that it tricks the olefactory? sensors.. if that's the right word. And yes, penegrin also helps. I had an Rx for that back when I was taking chemo, but never did have to use it because they injected me with something to help prevent nausea.

And Stephen.. how in the world can you remember ALL the details about all the games you've played, especially when they're a long time ago? Do you have a photographic memory or keep a journal for each one?? Just curious as I'm amazed at all you do know!

Thanks for more tips regarding the nausea thing. The doctors initially prescribed me Stemetil, which didn't help at all. They now have me on cinnarizine, which seems to be helping, but if I exert myself to much (and when I say exert myself, I only mean really light duties like putting my cloths back into my wardrobes), I still get really sick

As for America's Army; it's a superb game, especially for free. I’d say it’s a lot better than many commercial FPS games.

I thoroughly enjoyed playing it for a couple of years with a group of friend from all over the world. We formed a clan at one time used to play every night. My work started to suffer due to the lack of sleep as I'd often play the game from when the kids went to bed till around 4am. Then have a couple of hours sleep before cycling a round trip of 40 miles everyday.

I'd definitely recommend downloading and trying the game out. You can't play any of the maps until you've completed a certain proportion of training exercises, which is your typical boot camp. You have to take your character through an obstacle course which will familiarize you with how to move your character, and then you'll go to the ranges and fire several types of weapon. There are also optional training courses that will need to be taken before you reach level 15, which is the level at which you are able to wear the Special Forces uniform and select better weapons while in game. There's a first aid training session, another one where you are shown a series of pictures of tanks, planes etc with the names included, then you have to take a test and be able to name a certain percentage to pass. Then the best one is a night exercise where you have to get from point A to point B via several way points without being spotted by enemy sentries. Once you've completed the training sessions you are then able to log onto the many servers that operate. I'd suggest going for one of the cooperative maps first, though all of the maps in my opinion have their merits.

The reason I stopped playing was partly because of the accident, but also, there was only two of us out of the clan paying for a private box server. We decided to shut it down after repeated attempts at getting help from the other clan members; though that shouldn’t really have stopped us from playing because at the time there were over a thousand other servers running America’s Army. Our clan was called ‘The Pointmen’. For me the accident was the final nail in the coffin with respect to playing the game. Though I remember having bought a big pile of games just before my accident, then once I’d recovered from the initial injuries I started buying games online. Ever since then I buy what I fancy when it’s released.

Let us know how you get on. If you get into it I may just reinstall it and start playing again.

hamstergirl,
roflmao too,
That's great I never thought of the relation.

Whiterabbit,

No not yet, but I will when I get some ram. On this computer I have only 2gs, but I'm running vista, so that means 1gig really left over for apps + I only have 20 gigs left on this partition with fluctuates with all the installing and unistalling I do testing programs.
On my other partition on this drive I have xp, but I haven't used it 2 years. Once I got used to vista I left xp behind. I will probably end up taking it off and putting a linus OS on it for my dual boot. My main focus right now is getting some form linux on the other partiton and to start learning how to use it. I think they are the verge of making the a really good OS that is better than the big 2's os.

Other readers please don't jump for vista xp debate,That was not my intention in bringing them up.

Oh I had forgotton one other thing Stephen for your nausea, which you probably get or had gotten at one time. Phenegran, thats really good stuff and works and if it doesn't do all of the job. It will make you drowsy and you can sleep through the nasea.

I have gone as far as to make myself throw up to get it over with(does work), but then you probaby waisted your pain meds you just took that made you get nauseous. My baking soda recipe i gave before is just for the acid reflux, but sometimes the relief can get rid of the nasea.

Oh and no drinking alcohol for me either since the start of my problems. I learned quick for my meds that alcohol will make it worse. Since alcohol will intensify the effects of the opiates and can make the nausea worse or get me really ignorant.

copmom,
Were did you learn that? I have never heard of rubbing alchol for that purpose.

Apart from a few glasses of wine and champagne to celebrate birthdays and other special occassions, I've not had any alchol since my accident due to the heavy opiates I have to take. I'll try your suggestion though. Anthing to get rid of those nauseous feelings will be welcome.

#Whiterabbit

I couldn't of said it better myself in regards to sandbox softwares... and same as you many times sandboxie or returnil (BTW thanks again GAOTD team and returnil for this one) has saved me from re-formatting my computer over and over again... I test so much software on my system that I think that without a software to do this my Registry file would outgrow my swap file...

Practically any GAOTD before installing and keeping it on my main system I run through a Sandbox to avoid those pesky programs that don't contain all their files together..

lol, yeah, I didn't consider the link to the title game. Good one :). I'd noticed you'd not been around for some time. Sorry to here you've been ill. My kids love your online name by the way. :)

Txnnok, did you download any of the sand box programs I mentioned above when they were given away??? There's a good chance that at least one of those will be repeated. I particularily like Buffer Zone because it puts a red line around the edge of the screen, so you kinow when you're in the virtual machine. Although returnil is also a good program, I don't like the little box that says returnil that stays on your desktop and will even remain on top of any browser pages I open. Macrium Reflect I've got, but have not really tested yet, simply because I've been using buffer zone.

Hi Queenfisher, thanks for the tip. I actually really like almonds, but they are the sort of food that are not generally on the shopping list. I'll buy some next time my p.a. takes me shopping Thank you for the tip. As for your outburst. Too be honest, It's good to see posts such as yours. I too find a lot of the negative (unconstructive) comments really annoying. As far as I'm concerned you have no need to apologise. Personally I think it's a sad world when people complain about free stuff. I was brought up to appreciate any gift no matter what it was, whether it was something you thought was useful or not.

WhiteRabbit & Txnnok - Hey guys! Mmmmm, I know I shouldn't say this (but its never stopped me before).....don't you think that there is something just a little bit off with you two (or three, if queenfisher is in on this as well) playing a game called....The Suffering? I mean, really, after reading all the way thru the thread, it just HIT me, and now, well, ROTFLMAO!!!!! I am also disabled - health reasons are why I haven't been around much this year - and I'm always worried about my benefits getting pulled.

Don't wait till after the surgery to do start the process. I did that, but I was planning going back to work. If I would have done from the start, they couldn't have denied me. That way after its all over with and you feel like you can work you will have the a fall back. They will just deduct your earnings from your Dis. check.
I don't think they will penalize you for trying to go back to work, but I'm not sure about that. Oh and if you can get a letter from your doc get it now. They don't like to though, they want to believe they completely healed you with their god like powers.

Thankyou rabbit explaining it. I can definitely see using those virtual programs for installs you know are probably infected. I was actually looking into using vitual pc a few weeks ago, but was going to wait till I got some more ram.1066 is so expensive, esp.if you want to get the 2g sticks and I made this cp for overclocking so I don't want the cheapies.

I just had to add alittle comment here not so much about the games but about you guys. I left my first comment earlier on the GOTD site and I'm sorry if it sounded a little snotty. I didn't mean it to. I too am getting ready to fight the disability dragon. I have degenative disk desease in my spine.Already had 3 disks fused n getting ready for the next. till then they'll just keep sticking me with needles. I try to stay positive likeI'm sure the rest of you do but some days it just gets the best of you. Today was one of those days.I look forward to coming to the site. Even if theres no game I get to learn new things about software and you people. So when I log on and read the griping it ticks me off. I've never paid anything, I'm sure the software guys don't pay to give their stuff away, and theres no ads. So I'm pretty sure noones getting rich. And it really bugs me about people who gripe about getting stuff when its free. So I just had to say my peace earlier. But I just want you to know Stephen and the rest of you who take time from your lives to make our little GOTD world a better place, Thank you its appreciated. (PS Stephen, try raw almonds for the nausea)

Hi Txnnok,
A sand box is a program that creates a virtual computer within your physical memory. You can do anything you normally do that you would do using your normal computer, but if something goes wrong or even horribly wrong, all you do is switch you're computer off and it's gone and your computer is back to normal. That's the simple explanation. It's a little more technical than that, but I'm sure you get the ghist. We've been given several sand box programs over the last year including Macrium Reflect, Returnil and Buffer Zone. If you'r eunsure about any program it's always adviseable to work within one of these programs first to make sure it's safe. You can save virtual images so that when you boot your computer up again and re enter the sand box, the programs haven't been lost.

You can check out all the comments about the abve programs. You'll find some interesting discussion on the merits of such programs, and there might even be some links to freeware though I don't know of any freeware sandboxes.

Macrium Reflect:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/macrium-reflect/#comments

Buffer Zone:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/bufferzone-security-pro-2-50/#comments

and

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/bufferzone-security-pro/#comments

Returnil:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/returnil-virtual-system-premium-edition/#comments

and

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/returnil-virtual-system/#comments

I hope this helps :)

There are alternatives to sand box programs, the best of which I reckon are programs such as Eaz-Fix, a great little program that acts similarily to Windows restore point, but in my opinion is much better, because you can restore your computer from boot up much easier. The trick with these programs is to ensure that you always create a snapshot of your system before you download or install anything - remembering to delete previous save points because such programs use up quite a large chunk of hard disc space. Eaz-Fix, which was given away back in February (I think) has been one of my favorite giveaways and has saved my system several times already. (I'm sometimes a little reckless, lol)

Well, I didn't have any pop ups using it, but I can tell you there was alot communication. The destination addresses were always to >DestinationAddress: EdgePoint Networks, Inc. 12D2DD [00-E0-61-12-D2-DD].

- All Traffic
- Other Traffic
- BF2142.exe (4876)
- IPv4 (72.3.184.153 - 192.)
- IPv4 (192.- 72.32.5.13)
+ TCP (50311 - 9961)
- IPv4 (stella.prod.gamespy.com )
+ TCP (80 - 50312) ConvID = 25
- IPv4 (stellad.ms9.gamespy.com)
+ svchost.exe (1072)

I noticed when you pre order the demo goes through the downloader if I understood correctly. They probaby put in some crapware while people were waiting for the game and it ended up backfiring on them, so they ended up taking out.(possibly)

Hey shawndion, what is sandboxie? I've never heard of it. I think the reason the ads don't always come up is because of the firewall blocking. I've had it come up on mine, but not every time.
Right now I'm using Comodo free, but I usually use Bitdefender's Total security 2009. Unfortunately, it just came out of beta and it was causing a serious problem with cpu's locking up. I think its become common practice now for companies to send out products before they are actually ready. Well at least I didn't pay for it, it was free for beta testing.

200gb's of extra features for the game. wow
Oh, I tried playing, but I kepted getting nocked off by something called the Punkbuster. Is that a person?

No, I pre-ordered the full version because at the time I was a battlefield fanatic. Anything Battlefielld I bought no matter what. I'm still waiting for Battlefield 3 to come out as it promises to be similar to the console game Brothers in Arms. I have over 200Gb of mods and maps just for Battlefield 2 alone.

I'm presently getting back into Oblivion and Silent Hunter 4, and am downloading anything I can find thats remotely releated to the games. It's amazing what thhe modding community makes for thhe more popular games. I liked Warhammer, but never got into it in a big way as I preferred the FPS style game, though I'm getting more and more into strategy games again. I bought World at War several months ago, which is a fabulous game.

Did you use the demo before installing the EA's downloader for the full version?

I use the downloader for Warhammer Online and it doesn't do that to me. Even though it is a different game I'm not positive that it is related to the downloader. I just can't see EA spamming people its bad for business. They lost yours.

I've got the demo downloading right now 50 minutes left (1.1g file). Shoulda seen Warhammer it was like an 8 to 12 hour one. If I would have known that before hand, I wouldn't have bought it online.

I'm with ya on the downloader, although it's convenient for getting your games, it is terribly slow at opening the game and I have a pretty fast cpu. If you ever try it again, you can by pass the downloader by making a shortcut to the game's exe (application) file on your desktop. The downloader just has to be on your computer since it carries the license info as you probably know.
