Thanks for all the advice! I didn't think Charter would really 'help' me.. let's face it, they're in business to make money! Will check all the above out. Dang, still can't get links to open in a new window and STILL keep the tab for here! I've played and played with FF tab options! Sure I'm missing something stupid!

Hi again :-)
About your question on the Network Managers

The network managers can be used for desktops too.
They only emphasize laptops, cause usually that's what ppl use it for.

I posted an offer for a Connection Manager some time ago, in July.
Actually posted 2 offers. One from Avanquest, the other from GlobeSoft.
As usual, can't find the damn thread :-(

I get Avanquest offers in French & English. That one was offered back in June in French.
Around the same time I also saw the GlobeSoft offer on Raymond.
After researching both, we decided to get the GlobeSoft one.
Installed on the Laptop & PC that sometimes come & go to/from our Bookstore, so we wont have to reconfigure it each time.

This soft is useful when one needs to connect a machine (desktop or laptop) to different networks often.
With a Network Mngr you just need to switch, instead of having to reconfigure it each time.

I'm not sure if Raymond's offer is still available, you could try it.
Even though I don't think this is what you need to connect your 2 PCs to the Tubes, as I said in the above post.

Here the offer from Raymond.
Here GlobeSoft's site.

Hi Lauri

Totally crazy those numbers they gave you!! Incredible how they try to take advantage :-( Sheeeshhh

You are much better off w a wireless router, like WHabbit says.
It resolves all your troubles and you can add other devices later, either Palm, or game's consoles or the kids PC/Laptops when they come visit, or whatever ...
Plus, it also allows you to share all your peripherals (printers, scanners, externals, etc)

It may seem expensive, but you buy it just once, plus save on peripherals.
And you don't have all those cables running all over the place.

We installed it on the 2nd floor, and use all over the house & outside.
We put all our Desktops, Laptops, Palm, printer (1 printer for all), etc on it.

There are different types of routers, the more powerful cover a bigger area, and are more expensive. You don't need a strong one.
I've searched and found a few btwn $40. & $60.CAD, and I know it's less expensive in your neck of the woods. You could also try find a used one.
This one is a Linksys G/B & has 4 ports for $50.CAD

Other advantage is the integrated firewall.
And as long as you put in a password, nobody can mess w your connection.
I left my network open for the longest time, so ppl around me could use it - Yes, I had all the machines & devices password protected, so nobody could access them ;-)
They could only use the Internet connection.
I only closed it down a few months after starting coming to GOTD, cause by then I was using all my dwld/upload monthly quotas ... of course!! Hummm, I wonder why ;-)

Hope this helps, Mangoette

PS: Ouuupps, took sooo looong to write this, Goody posted b4 me.

yeah, a fast ethernet (10/100 mips) broadband router/home gateway with 802.11b/g (?/54 mips) wireless/wi-fi is cheap, and so is a wireless nic.

the wireless usually have a 4-port wired switch too, so one machine is wired, the other a bit slower on wireless. (slower is relative, unless you have one heck if a plan you're not going to notice)

I'm still wired, as cables are cheap and that way nobody can vampire my dsl.

the wired-only routers are slightly cheaper, too. (newegg.com ~$5 bottom end and the least-price linksys- bottom end wired is 20 plus shipping, the linksys wired 40 free ship at the moment for ballpark) and interference... nada. slightly simpler to set up, but not a big difference.

(also depends on whether you'll want to upgrade to the faster 802.11n/gigabit networking later. for now, wired gigabit's available, 300mips 892.11n is still second-draft and waiting for final. both cost more, and generally will only make a difference in speed between the 2 machines, no difference on internet access.)

Hi Copmom, they are trying to con you out of some hard earned cash. All you need is a wireless router attached to your modem (or a particular type of Ethernet cable that I'll mention below). Then you can set up a network using XP or Vista. It's not that hard; but if you are having problems Google is a brilliant tool for finding suitable tech sites that'll talk you through the procedures for setting up a network. You can use an Ethernet cable, but you have to ensure that the cable has a crossover so that when you look at the plugs that go into the back of (or side if using a laptop). The colors of the wires that you can see inside the plugs are opposite to each other when you compare the plugs side by side. With one of those cables you don't need a wireless network, but if you want to work in different rooms you'll need quite a long cable. I have a two meter cable and a crossover unit going spare if you want them; (though you can buy cables that are already crossed over from any computer hardware store)) Just Email me and we can talk.

Regards

Stephen

Maybe what I'll do is contact Charter cable to see if there's a way to have both hooked up, heck, they have both TV's on one cable! Then again, I don't want to have to pay more to have that service on both! Maybe I need an A/B switch like the old days or a splitter! Except this does have a little modem box for the service (which I had to buy).
Just called, he said they do have a "home networking service" but you'd have to buy a modem/router combo for 49.99 and then pay $9.99 a month. I think I'll pass on that, already pay them a fortune for internet/TV/phone service!

I'm not sure. There shouldn't be a problem though as I think lap tops are mentioned because of the search and find features of this program.

I'd think it will work on both desktop and lap top computers, but you'd have to test it to be certain. There are more details about the software by following the link above. I tried to copy the main bulk of information, but it wasn't possible to copy the web page.

Stephen, I just got the same offer from Avanquest. My question is, does it HAVE to be a laptop?? Wondered if I could use it with the 2 desktops I now have in here?
I've been trying to figure out HOW to have them both able to go online? I'm on cable, they're on opposite sides of the room, and only this machine has the cable hookup. And I'm NOT wireless and don't have/want a laptop. Any suggestions?

Addendum: Holy cow! Just decided to pull on the cable wire where it comes up from under the house.. there's a LOT of cable!!

I recently bought Expert PDF a program that converts documents such as word documents into PDF. The main reason was because I wanted to upload a review of a game called Battlefield 2, but the word document was nearly 200Mb, far too large for just a word document. Whereas converting it to a PDF document reduce the size by 400%. Anyway, since buying it I've receive loads of offers from the company. Today they are offering a Free Download Manager, so I thought I'd post the link to the download page here for anyone that's interested in a download manager. Here are the basic specs:

Avanquest Connection Manager:

Connection Manager makes it easy for Laptop users to get connected when they are on the move.
Detect - Automatically finds & stores the preferred set up for each location
Select - If you've been to the location before, it automatically selects that connection
Connect - Automatically connects to the Network & peripherals for that location

If you work from different locations, and are fed up with having to set up your email, VPN, network and printer settings every time you move, download Connection Manager for hassle free mobile computing!
