Thanks Lucy, I'm surprised that the resourse doesn't include Aquazone 2, which for me has been one of the best. I also have dream Aquarium, which is also good. It's go slightly better looking fish, and the environments look good, but doesn't have the epansivenss of Aquazone 2. Aquazone i which includes both the seven seas and desktop garden screensavers is limited only by its lack of support for Vista.

I've not tried Digifish, so will do so wen I have the time. Aquazone 2 has Dolphins and several other mammal and elasmobranchs, plus other species besides fish. It also has freshwater (Amazon river basin and salt water fish environments (open sea, deep sea, arctic ocean and corl reef) all with a 360 degree vista.

Regards

Hi everyone, I don't often reply to posts like this, too lazy, - what with all the registration and log-in and so on - but as an aquarium screensaver lover i simply MUST advocate Aqua Real 2, DigiFish Dolphin and Dream Aquarium (they don't pay me!!).
There's a good new 2009 review which I find quite comprehensive at

http://aquarium-screensavers-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

Shall also check out other suggestions made here.

May you be well and happy!!

Sorry, I was being lazy. I almost posted the link to the 'Vista thread' but was in a hurry, so din't. Anyway, here it is. It's nothing important. I was just waffling on about Radio Hams.

Hi Bigun,

Sorry, I didn't realize you were on a budget. Still I may have some very good news for you. In my excitement at discovering the latest Aquazone 2 screensavers several months ago I went mad and purchased every Aquazone 2 screensaver there was. It was only a few weeks later that I realized that I'd bought unnecessary programs because as I mention above there are two main programs called ‘Open Water’ and ‘Oceans of the World’ as well as all three expansion packs. I discovered that I only needed to buy either Open Water and the three expansion packs or Oceans of the World and one expansion pack, because apart from the inclusion of two of the expansion packs in Oceans of the World, both programs are the same..

I contacted Smith Micro about this, asking why it wasn’t made clear on their web site. They kindly offered to refund the money for one of the programs, but I never received it despite several Emails, so if the administrators will give you my Email, we can arrange for you to get my registration information for Open Water (you don’t need codes for the expansions). To do this click on the link that says “You have no new messages below your name at the top of this page (assuming you are logged on) and then click on new PM. You will then see a selection above the message title. Just select admin, and then write a message requesting my Email. I give permission for the administrators to release mine to you. Get in touch and I will give you Open Water and two of the expansion packs. All you’d need to do is buy the Amazonian River Basin pack for $12.99 if you want the full set. I’d highly recommend it as it’s got a whole new set of fish due to it being a freshwater fishery.

I hope this meets with your approval. :)

Thanks for the information on the fire screensavers. I'll certainly check those out once I've rebuilt my main computer. (I've had to replace the motherboard, and now I'm reinstalling the OS. I can't decide whether I should give Vista another try (I deleted it last September), or stick with XP Pro.

I am glad to find others that enjoy screensavers.

I am sorry I put you all to the trouble of giving me the information on the aquarium screensavers and then I have not been able to make up my mind which to download.

Money is very tight. I just wiped out the details on that because they have no bearing here.

You might want to check these out for your fireplace screeensaver. The Duraflame screensaver that I had several years ago did not have any advertising with it - there was no distraction from the restful fireplace at all. I can't remember what I did about the clock.

If the same restful fireplace is missing from the Duraflame link below I will see if I can find what I had before. I have already looked for it - but not very hard. When I found these links I stopped looking.

see 'ya later,

Bigun

The links didn't copy and I don't know how to fix that. Any instructions would be appreciated!

I found these links by looking at http://www.ratloaf.com/html_screensaver/win_d-f.html ,

I've lost my fireplace screensavers. I think we got one free last year. The other one I can't remember where I got it from. They are somewhere on the hundreds of CD's and DVD's that I've used to hard copy my programs and games. I usually keep most on my external discs as well, but can't find the fire ones which is a pity as I too love the sound and look of a fire. I've not had an open fire since I was around 8 years old (1964) and seeing even a screensaver takes me back to those days when I used to stare into the embers and make pictures from the flickering shadows on the walls.

I also like a good screensaver in spite of the nay sayers. I thought I found a good one a while back, it was of a crackling fireplace (w/sound). In my area we have winter 4 months out of the year and I have grown to like a good crackling fire. It turned out that a fireplace manufacturer's logo would pop-up every 30 seconds, very annoying. Other than that it was real nice. It was free so I guess you get what you pay for. :)

I agree with respect to the wasted space Bigun; I'm always surprised at the voracity the screensaver haters voice their opinions. It's obvious to me that most of those that comment haven't even bothered to try the screensaver, which makes it even more of a joke.

I personally love my screensavers. It’s a pleasure to watch many of them when I need a break from the computer (yeah I know taking a break from the computer by watching a computer screen, lol) I sometimes have up to three computers on at a time in the study, and love to occasionally glance over to see which screensaver is running. I cycle through them on a daily basis. My favorites are Aquazone 2 and G-Force, though some of the nature based screensavers from Astrogemini, Terminal Studios and other screensaver distributors are fabulous. I also love the dark castle screensaver and the mechanical clock screensaver..

Nighthawk, thanks for the reminder concerning the free download section of the website. I had completely forgotten about that area. Seems like I checked that for an aquarium screensaver sometime back. I don't really remember the results so I will take another look.

Whiterabbit-uk (is this the correct spelling or is "uk" a place locator?), that's quite a write up. I will need to to go through that two or three times to try to figure out what it is that you have - and what your recommendations are. I do remember looking at the Aquazone screensaver sometime back but it must've been a long time ago. The way I remember it, there was only an Aquazone One and Two.

Fortunately, I do not have to worry about whether something is Vista compatible or not. I guess having a program that you know is Vista compatible maybe some help somewhere along the line. I can see getting stuck with a computer that comes with Vista preloaded and deciding to check that operating system out.

I see an awful lot of space wasted, in my way of thinking on arguments concerning the merits of using a screensaver or not using one. Why is that such a touchy subject? The ire that is brought out when the term "screensaver" is used is just a little short of unbelievable. It seems like a war with no enemy. Maybe we ought to change the name from "screensaver", to something more neutral and less descriptive - and forget about semantics. It doesn't seem like we can even agree on the spelling of the term.

I thank you both for your input.

Hi Bigun,

I've been into aquarium screensavers for several years, ever since that fish screensaver became available for windows 98. I've got several, of which the Aquazone series is by far the best of the lot. They have two versions Aquazone and Aquazone 2. The former (Aquazone) is not Vista compatible. The basic Aquazone package is impressive enough with more fish species than most other aquarium type screensavers, and you can buy expansion packs to add certain types of fish or other species such as jelly fish, sharks and turtles. The full package comes with load of different aquarium back grounds and you can feed the fish or change the environmental conditions.

Aquazone 2 is by far the best though. There are several packages available, but I'd go for the most expensive one because it includes all the expansion packs apart from the freshwater pack which is called the Amazonian River basin. Aquazone two is not an aquarium based screensaver. Instead you get several options for observing the fish, of which there are around 40 species that include everything from shrimps, whales, otters, dolphins, piranha’s(in the freshwater pack), sharks, stingrays etc. You can opt to follow a specific fish around so that you see the environment from a fish's perspective, or you can watch the screensaver from a 360 degrees vantage. The environments are massive, so there's so much to see. There are five different environments;

Blue Ocean
Deep Sea
Coral Sea
Arctic Ocean
Amazonian River Basin (Freshwater fish)

The following is copied from Aquazones home page:

Smith Micro's Consumer Group Launches Aquazone 2: Open Water

Aquazone® 2: Open Water Edition Brings the World's Oceans Directly to the PC

January 08, 2007

ALISO VIEJO, CA – Smith Micro Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: SMSI), Consumer Group today released the latest edition of its popular Aquazone screensaver software - Aquazone® 2: Open Water. The much-anticipated, newly designed software offers the latest life-like 3D technology by bringing over thirty-nine unique species of sea life and thirteen photorealistic and customizable classic tanks to the PC.

While earlier versions of Aquazone simulate a beautiful aquarium environment with various "tanks", Open Water is immersed with a full 360° panning, greater depth of field and extreme close-ups. The Open Water experience allows users to watch, follow, and feed fish in a natural setting as either a stand alone application or screen saver. Designed for people of all ages, the Open Water edition lets users stock their own virtual ocean with whales, sharks, dolphins, sea turtles and more.

"Aquazone Open Water is perfect for home or the office," said David Polzine, Product Manager, Smith Micro Software, Inc. "It creates the ocean setting right on your desktop and allows the user to observe three dimensional landscapes and marine life in amazing quality." Aquazone Open Water has perfectly mastered the experience of swimming alongside the world's amazing underwater creatures without getting wet… or sea sick."

You can check out all these by following the links below:

I can honestly say I wasted my money on all the other fish screensavers. If you're on a limited budget I'd recommend Aquazone 2 oceans of the World which gives you all but the freshwater expansion pack ($34):

http://my.smithmicro.com/win/aquazone/oceans/index.html

If you’re on a budget then the cheapest would be Aquazones desktop garden ($19.99), but it's not compatible with Vista as are all Aquazone 2 products. You can get the desktop garden free with Aquazone 2: Open water, but that package only includes two of the environments. To complete the set, you'd have to buy three expansion packs which works out more expensive. On no account buy both open water and oceans of the world because they are basically the same, though ‘oceans of the world’ has four environments as opposed to two. The more expensive oceans of the world is definitely worth it if you were thinking of buying the two expansion packs as each of those costs $12.99 each (you can't use the expansion packs alone)

I've been waiting for more expansion packs to be released because I really love the screensaver. You can even zoom in on fish as well as pan around even when it's in screensaver mode. To use the feeding option you have to open the program as an application as opposed to a screensaver, which you can with both Aquazone 1 and 2

I've been looking for a really superb aquarium screensaver for a long time. In previous years I have seen some that were excellent - but they all seem to have disappeared. One screensaver that I saw approximately year ago allowed you to feed the fish, change the time of day for various scenes, control the number of and types of fish and other sea creatures and make a number of changes to the sea floor itself.

I mainly want to use the screensaver for my own quiet thoughts and meditation. It is irrelevant if it saves anything or not. In fact, I don't care if it uses more CPU cycles than it saves - its effect on pixel lifetime is of no consequence.
