But don’t feel bad because your experience is not unique. Myself, been there, done that! There is a saying, “People who do not learn from history are destined to repeat it” (or something like that).</p> <p>Personally I, never, ever, try to update a program I got from GAOTD. Too many people lose sight of what the project is all about. We are given a fully functional product, free of charge, under specific Terms and Conditions. The reply you got back is not surprising. If I need tech support I’m limited to whatever self-help resources are available on the developer’s homepage and participation in any forums. We agreed to their terms and conditions before installation. And you know what? I have never experienced any problems that are frequently brought up at the GAOTD, and I am satisfied working with all of those 51 programs. If a newer version is available to the paying public, then hey, it’s not an issue with me because I still came out ahead on the deal coming right out of the blocks.</p> <p>Secondly, if GAOTD puts up a newer version of a previous program, and you feel those changes makes it worth updating, this is what I do. I uninstall that previous program with a third-party uninstaller, I prefer Revo. After trying out other uninstallers such as ccleaner among others, in my opinion I found Revo is the most user friendly of the lot, is very thorough, and it’s free. I’m still amazed how much crap would still be in my registry if I hadn’t used Revo. This is typically why so many people become gremlin infested. Now if you’re worried about losing any output you had, don’t. Uninstalling a program isn’t going to have any affect on whatever output it produced. For example, a newer version of Folder Marker was offered not to long ago. I had been using a previous version and changed quite a few icons on my desktop and folders in Windows Explorer. If something was screwed up I’d have to rearrange everything on my desktop (not a good thing), but I wanted that updated version. A few times if I went to download a 2nd time the same zip file from GAOTD, after deleting the 1st zip file I have to run the CCleaner or the file won’t download right the 2nd time. I would notice that downloading a file the first time if it was a 5 minute download would only take 5 seconds the 2nd time. That tells me that the download manager didn’t recognizing that the 1st download in the same folder was deleted and instead of downloading the fresh zip file it seems to raise the old file from the hard drive probable from a temp file folder. Not sure, I never looked deep enough into why or how it happens. All I know, CCleaner has helped me with the type of problem you described. </p> <p>After doing the above and it’s still not running right, you might have to look at other areas.
