I believe there are downloadable maps and units and the game is playable without the original Total Annihilation.

They have as a goal that their engine will ALSO be able to play the original TA content. It is not required - but if you have it, you can play it too.

There are several copies of the original Total Annihilation on eBay that are quite inexpensive. http://search.ebay.com/total-annihilation

Thanks, that looks great. I visited their website briefly and it appears that currently one must still own a copy of TA to get all of Spring to run or did I miss something?... Of course, that's a big problem because TA is no longer widely available

Take a look at this: http://spring.clan-sy.com/
And the screenshots http://spring.clan-sy.com/screenshots.php leave the original Total Annihilation for dead. (IMO)

Spring is a project to create the best RTS ever (no joke). There are three principle goals which we hope to achieve.

 1. Reach a stage where TA Spring can flawlessly execute most of Total Annihilation's original gameplay, with its original units in their original format.
2. Add new features as we see fit, fix bugs, and release new versions when we feel it is appropriate to do so.
3. Support the mod community as we see fit.
4. Improving the already fine original TA Interface in a way that the Players will have more tactical Options, more Control, more Comfort and still don`t get lost, as long as they are willing to learn.

I used to play this years ago and recently my nephew DLed the demo and loves it but cant find a place to purchase the game anywhere. The game is Cavedog's "Total Annihilation"
After its first run, it was was sold on Walmart discount racks for years but apparently is no longer sold. Making this the free give away game of the day would give publisher
plenty name recognition and possibly a new market for its sequels and other games
