Problems with software compatibility are usually (but not always) problems with the software itself. The fact that certain aspects of Vista work different to how previous versions of Windows works, means that in many cases incompatibility problems will only be resolved by the various developers of the programs you were having problems with.

Keeping an eye on their respective websites, watching for new versions that mention Vista fixes is probably the best guide.

Microsoft expects developers to update their programs to work with Vista - not the other way around. The Vista Service Pack mostly addresses problems with Vista itself. So if you are expecting Service Pack 1 to make your old versions of windows software that previously wouldn't run on Vista - I think you will probably still be very disappointed.

If you must run Vista - I'd suggest running dual boot with XP to run all your software, and Vista to run Vista "stuff".

WR, are you talking about service pack 1? I can't even get my machine to d/l it. I've tried like 10 times and it always fails.

I'm just wondering whether the recently released service pack for Vista fixed any of the many incompatibility issues it had for many community members. I have a home premium version, but uninstalled it last September/October because I came up against too many incompatibility issues with virtually all of the software I'd previously bought while running XP as well as hundreds of games, all costing many thousands of pounds (double that for US dollars). So you can imagine, I wasn't happy to re-purchase working copies of all of these programs. I've been hoping that the service pack (that I last heard did have problems) has fixed many of these. I don't want to have to reinstall Vista though and find that most of my software is still incompatible.

Can anyone shed any light on the matter.

Thank you
Regards

Stephen
