We could actually start a version of this ourselves, and see if the GOTD and GGOTD teams think it has any merit. Just start a vote in forums of the stuff already given away and vote which we would like to see as perhaps an addad "Repeat Giveaway of the Month" or some such. It would be great to get another chance at one we might have missed, or for the people whe keep complaining about losing them when they get a new computer - at least they might get a few of the best back.

There are lots of sites out there that let you choose your own freeware or shareware. Not everyone is able (or wants) to spend their entire day on this site. But those who do shouldn't be allowed to decide what's given away. It's great to come here to see what's being offered and downloading it if you like. If you don't like it...get on with your life!!! The GOTD staff and the developers seem to have things under control. I think we should let them run the site.

I agree with FABScott. Besides I don't really like the idea of tyranny of the majority. It could reduce the variety of offerings. We might just end up with a bunch of arkanoids or shooters. The variety is limited as it is. I would like to see more word games.

The more people that visit this site, the more viable it becomes. If people only came here when they knew the download they wanted was available it would seriously reduce the amount of visitors. It is for that reason that I think this is a ridiculous idea.

How hard is it to wait, and check each day?

@Lee: I agree with you! I've started a new topic on this yesterday, but nobody answered till now.

My idea behind that wasn't bandwith or time saving, but simply managing when you have to be online to download this e.g. when you're on holiday.

I have an idea (if it's been said before then stand on me).

How about a weekly list which includes, Sunday app 1 Tuesday app 2 Wednesday app 3 etc to Saturday.

Then we can check the list see what we like, then come on a day which will save bandwidth for the site, cutting their bandwidth costs and then save us time.

I have only downloaded 1 item in 7 days, which is today.

Thanks Lee

I like the idea of a daily surprise myself. The voting idea is cool and might get people to the site though.

As I said, the possible program candidates that can be voted for come from a list provided by GOTD.

All the programs on the list have already been determined that they may be a "giveaway" by GOTD. We just vote as to which one we want on a certain day.

Perhaps if a program is so unpopular that it receives only 5% of the votes - maybe GOTD might reconsider, and replace it with another program instead for a future giveaway.

I think a lot of people would feel that they would like some level of control or predictability in what is "coming up".

I am thinking about the idea where a giveaway could be "voted for". Perhaps during the week people can register and vote (once per account) for a program from a list of maybe 5 or 6 alternatives provided by GOTD. The program that wins is released as a giveaway on a pre-arranged date at the end of the vote as the regular daily giveaway.

Now the benefit of this would be twofold - firstly people would have some say in what is offered and what is not - GOTD will get an idea of what most people like and what the members think sucks. This could be a guide for future offerings. Also people can visit the websites of the developers to read about the programs that can be voted for - maybe download a demo and try them out before they vote. hmmm - the software companies would just love lots of people visiting their site to try out their programs so they can vote for a giveaway.

Secondly as only people who register an account to vote - will also be registered to participate in the forum discussions and hopefully continue to build the GOTD community. People will hopefully discuss the merits (or otherwise) of the programs on offer for those who haven't voted yet.

This would introduce a new aspect to GOTD giving people the opportunity to vote for giveaways, and after voting they can follow the vote tally until the end. If this was offered every few days between normal giveaways, site members would feel that they had a little more say in what can be downloaded.

Tell me I'm wrong... and GOTD is just about clicking on a giveaway link once a day - and then coming back 24 hours later to do the same again.
