You may want to reconsider giving up on GAOTD for the simple reason that the problems you’re experiencing may compound and become issues with other programs. In essence it’s a ticking time bomb and the clock is still running. There is nothing extraordinary or unique about GAOTD downloads. Unless you understand what changed in your PC, and done something about it, then all anyone can recommend is that you have at the ready all the disks containing your backup’s (i.e., My Documents folder, My Pictures, My Music, My Favorites, etc).

On many occasions someone griped in frustration because their PC wasn’t behaving has called me. Something has changed, to that there is no doubt, but what is the question. So I would go through various troubleshooting steps attempting to isolate their problem. Sometimes I’d be on the phone for hours saying, “Try this, does it help?” and the answer would be, “Ok I tried that and NO it doesn’t help, I’ve still got the problem”. Eventually I’d be enticed to make a house call, and after a few minutes I would isolate the problem. After fixing their PC I’d ask, “I thought you said over the phone you tried what I just did and said it didn’t work?” And the answer, “I guess I misunderstood because I thought I was following your instructions. Sorry about that!”

Was I pissed that I had to make a road trip to fix a problem that could have just as easily been fixed by themselves? No I couldn’t, because I’ve been guilty (on more than one occasion) of making the same kind of error. Swearing to some technical support person over the phone, convinced that I’ve done a troubleshooting step when in fact I only thought I did. With all that in mind, consider remote assistance. Send an invitation to a “Techie” friend or computer expert and let them connect to your computer to help you solve your problem. Here’s where you can get more details:

Using Remote Assistance to Get Help When You Need It
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/remoteassist/intro.mspx

Step-by-Step Guide to Remote Assistance
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457004.aspx

Another suggestion to fix the problem would be to do a System Restore. Find a restore point from two weeks ago (the point where you could install GAOTD’s), and restore your system to that point, undoing any changes that got you in trouble. It’s a safe way of getting you back to where you were without jeopardizing personal files or the majority of customized settings.

Don’t give in and keep in mind how much more computer savvy you’ll have from this experience!

Hi hotdoge3,

Thanks for trying to help too. Yes I already tried to do by switching off my firewall before but still the same (un-believeable why still doesn't work)And I been 'keep trying' for months now still the same error msg.

Dear Violet,
Thanks for advise too (I am not tech either :) ),Your suggestion of trying by useing the main connect then using the sharing cable is worth to try. However, what I don't wish for is that, in the past I don't have problem to dl stuffs by my sharing cable . So why is that so now is not 'working'? This is so 'crazy' ( I mean my case not you guys LOL ) . Thanks all you helpful souls out there. Please give me more advise if possible. Good day.

hello again, jul...

sorry to hear you are still having problems...

i'm not a techie either, but will throw these out for you to check...

if i understand correctly, you may actually have three firewalls to deal with...

1) if you've tried everything suggested before (here & other threads) about activating, then you must've tried to activate after turning your firewall off (to be certain it isn't blocking you)...

2) did you check to be certain that Windows built-in firewall is off, & not blocking your activation?...

3) you said you share a modem...if you are wireless & sharing a router, it may have a built-in firewall & be blocking your activation............did you try plugging the ethernet cable directly into your computer & see if you can activate while you are not wireless?...

if i'm wrong here (very possible), somebody please jump in & correct me...

also...i don't think your PC clock has anything to do with activation...GOTD starts at a certain time & ends at the same time 24 hours later...it doesn't matter what your clock says...only the 24 hour GOTD server time matters...if you are within whatever time is stated on the GOTD page, you are OK...

good luck, jul...

How everyone,

I am 'able to obtain' today (should be my tonight's) software. The video editor by trying the same 'trick' that one reader advise me before. 'download from the supplier website and use the registered code.

I sincerely apologize to the supplier. I don't mean to 'steal' this (is suppose to be free giveaway for our site today) but I find this software 'cute' so ............. :P

I did want to post this at today's comment as first, wait if the supplier 'found out' they may 'stop it' and our fellow readers who have same problem like me may no longer able to 'do it'. Second I am sure the supplier won't be too please with it (though they do plan to giveaway today.

So thank for that lovely member that advise me to try this 'trick'. Thanks (Buddy please don't 'delete this' . ) Good night everyone.

Hi my_name_is_,

Yes I has just checked out the thread. (Thanks). My 'situation' is very similiar with 'CountryBoy'. Two pc at home and one always work but one doesn't (whenever GOTD move 'house' or something). And unfortunately the one that have the 'problem' is my mine and the other does not belong to me (sob........). We share the same high speed modem. My location is Vancouver, B.C. So I really don't what is going on. While ago Buddy or who (sorry can't recall) mentioned that my 'time' is 'not right'. But I have check my laptop 'auto detect' and my time is right? So I don't know what they mean 'wrong time'. May need more 'detail advise' cos I am not pc-tech.

Thanks again for all helpful advise. I been having fun downloading and testing the softwares and games here. I gain alot of knowledge these years since I found GOTD. I don't want to lost 'this fun hobby'. (err........)V_V

aha!!!! now we're getting somewhere. Your downloads work fine, but when you go to run the activation application you get an error. that rules out the browser entirely.

The firewall or other anti malware application could be blocking tht activate.exe that you download. That would not effect your web use, email, or messaging software. Check the rules in your security software for an activate.exe entry. It could very well be in one of them, and it would cause exactly what you are describing.

Another possibility, which is an issue I had, is that the activate.exe won't run from the zip file sometimes. make sure to extract it to a folder or the desktop before running it.

here is another prior post on the issue.

Did you check this solution :
The usual problem with NEVER being able to connect during activation is Internet Explorer is set to "Work Offline" (and the user has a secondary browser to download the giveaways) (BuBBy)

Also one of your browsers should be set as 'the default browser'.

Bonjour Jul
Darn thing you have there!! Must be frustrating indeed!!

As Brad said, what message *exactly* do you rcv from FF??
Were you able to take advantage of Brad's link? Did it work?

• Do you do a regular cCleaner &/or Total Privacy run?
• What Security softs are you using? AV, Spyware, etc

Come to think of it, even better if you post *ALL* your specs here:
==> Hardware
==> OS, Browser, all AVs, Spywares, Cookie/Cache cleaners, ...
To see if one of us has has a problem in the past w any of them.
With all of us thinking 2gether, I'm sure we'll find someway to resolve this mystery!

I just noticed some time back WRabbit asked if you had tried to dwld/install on another PC.
I don't think you answered that.

Peace, Mangoette

Hi again Jul. :)

You should try using a portable version of Firefox to see if you still have problems accessing the giveaways. You can download it here : Firefox Portable 3.01
This will not interfere with your installed version Firefox.

If you still get error messages, please be more specific.

you mentioned an error message. What message do you get?

knowing that may help narrow this down some.

If it is a message from your firewall, check the settings there. There is, to put it in basic terms, a sort of redirect that happens with the links that could be throwing a security alarm. For example:

today's link when you click to download now

actual file link is
http://files.giveawayoftheday.com/iRecordMaxSoundRecorder.zip

I will bet the second link works fine. It's something in your security settings if so. It is perfectly logical that a firewall could block autodownloads like that.

Hello 'rabbit'(Stephen) :),

I am so happy to hear from you again. Mine is Acer Travelmate Note Book and it come with 'built in' default program. Therefore it didn't come with any CD/repair disk.(I already check with Acer Tech. Support) So I can't 'repair' by inserting CD or it will 'return to default' position and lost everything I have. (My NB crashes before around 6 mths ago :( ) I really appreciates you guys take your times to try and help me. Please let me know can I still do as you advise without a repair CD for this 'unique condition'. As long I won't lost 'everything' in this 'tiny brain' of my Note Book will be great. Thanks and hear from you again. :)

Hi Robert:),

I really appreciate you new guide and have follow exactly what you advise me. I check and confirm http://www.giveawayoftheday.com is not in the list (I view through the long list twice ..eyes get so 'confuse'after scrolling LOL) and I did entered the command and clear the DNS. I also double check that ff is my default browser. Clean my caches too. Confirm that I didn't 'block' gotd site in option. Uninstall Win service pack 3 while ago when I also suspect that this may be the cause. (back to SP 2 now). I really don't know whats going on? This is so 'upset' . Will love to hear more advise from you again or anyone to try whether this can solve. Thank you once again. (sigh...)

It's got to be something to do with your o.s. (I reckon). Maybe you should do a full re-install of windows. You could firs try doing a repair install. Then if that doesn't work do the deed and format the drive (But make an image of the registry first so that you don't lose valuable registry information) You could try exporting the software registries from the software hives found in the registry editor (go to the start menu, click on run then type in regedit. you can search for the software hives then export them to the desktop as executable registry files so that you can reinstall the software hives after you've done a format. Don’t forget to save the files to a safe place first though.

Failing that download Version Tracker and run the demo. It will list all the drivers that are out of date.

Go to the task manager and turn off all unnecessary programs. You my have to try this by trial and error, though a rule of thumb is don't turn off any system programs.

Go to the tool bar at the bottom left next to the clock and right click on the icons. You should be able to turn off most of the background programs that are running. Most are usually not necessary. You can make this more permanent by using a suitable start up manager (I use Anvir suite - there’s a freeware version that does the job well)

http://www.anvir.com/download.htm

I'd also retry clearing out your internet cache.

Regards
Stephen

Hi Jul,

Maybe you should take a look at your hosts file,
(usually C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts , on XP that is)
Open this file with notepad and see if "www.giveawaytheday.com" is listed in it.
If this site is listed you should delete that line.

If not,try to clear the DNS resolver cache, using the following command entered at the command prompt:
ipconfig /flushdns

No one mentioned about the mirror site. Have you tried using it? For some reason, I could never d/l from the main site since their last move..always had to use the mirror site. It never said anything about a firewall error though; I would just get a corrupt file.

What does the error exactly say? What firewall are you using?

one thing you could try is getting a download manager if you can download from other sites. It may help.

I've been using this one for a while now, and it does well
http://www.orbitdownloader.com/

There are many possibilities depending on what exactly happens when you try to download. The first thing I would check is security settings in your internet options or any security software you may have running.

You just need the clock set to your own time zone. Just click on the clock, then the middle browser labeled time zone, and select the one closest to where you live.

Have you tried downloading onto another computer?

The only other thing I could suggest would be to set up a second windows installation. I found many times with programs that wouldn't work, or DVD based games that wouldn't install, creating a second windows installation solved the problem. The only problem with this would be you wouldn't be able to use the software when using your normal installation; but at least you would have copies. If this worked you'd be able to keep al your giveaways on the new installation. This would actually be a blessing in some ways, because the more programs you fill your root directory with, the slower your computer starts to run, though one installation wont affect anther unless the hard drive you are using is getting dangerously full.

The only 'change' I believe I have done to my laptop is that I just upgraded my winzip to pro version. Shouldn't have anything to do with it right.
