Saw Carlin in a gawdawful performance back in '76 or '77. He arrived late, carrying a glass of what he claimed was honey water and dragging a stool on stage. After admitting he "was sick and hadn't prepared anything" he launched into a nonstop run-on sentence comprised of exceedingly crude free association, random foul musings and (drug-induced?) nonsensical babbling... call it the 7 little words on steroids. Compared to that act, Mel Gibson on a weekend bender would be deemed a choir boy. A decidedly disgusted audience (my date and I, too) began to file out en masse after the first 15 minutes. For all you comedy fans, It's a sad day. He pushed the bounds of comedy in the 70s and kept on pushing until heart failure took him at the age of 71.
