lol Watcher, I nearly used one of the Stengel quotes you mention above, but decided on another instead. I've been getting my quotes from 'quote of the day' The secret to managing a baseball team quote was used on the 10th June. Anyway here's mine for today:

When a man says he approves of something in principle, it means he hasn't the slightest intention of putting it into practice.

You good folks have quoted so many brilliant people here, but as a baseball fan, it has struck me that you're perhaps ignoring two of the most unique minds of our time. One was former baseball manager Casey Stengel, who was famous for his baseball savvy. And even more famous for his off the beaten path way of expressing it. So much so, that his longer rambles were dubbed "Stengalese", and he, "the Old Perfesser". Always colorful, and often quite canny:

Describing the difference in talent between two players:
"See that fellow over there? He's 20 years old. In 10 years he has a chance to be a star. Now, that fellow over there, he's 20, too. In 10 years he has a chance to be 30."

The secret to managing a baseball team:
"The trick is to keep the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided."

In spring training:
"All right, everybody line up alphabetically, according to your height."

"Being with a woman never hurt no professional baseball player.
It's staying up all night looking for a woman that does him in."

Pretty good advice if you're letting success go to your head:
If we are going to win the Pennant, we got to start thinking we are not as good as we think we are."

On not taking his own success too seriously:
“Success is getting paid for homeruns someone else hits."

But, you have never truly contemplated the vaguaries of life until you've comtemplated the wisdom of Casey's inarticulate protege - The Yogi - Yogi Berra:

Yogi giving directions to his home, which could be reached by more than one route:
"When you come to a fork in the road, take it."

"Baseball is ninety percent mental. The other half is physical."

Explaining why he no longer went to a restaraunt:
"Nobody goes there no more; it's too crowded!"

An observation on the state of the economy:
"A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore."

After being told by the wife of New York Mayor John V. Lindsay that he looked cool despite the heat:
"You don't look so hot, either."

His son Dale, who played in the majors, revealed that he might be a "chip off the old block" in more than one way when he was asked to compare himself to his father:
"Our similarities are different."

And, perhaps, Yogi's most useful advice:
"Always go to other people's funerals; otherwise they won't come to yours."

Finally, when told by Milwaukee manager Phil Garner that he had just uttered another Yogi-ism:
"What's a Yogi-ism?"

I will now leave you as we all go to a nice quiet place to try and absorb all that without our heads exploding. :)

WR, that reminds of a famous Hitchcock misquote and the interview I saw where he corrected it. Just imagine, if you can, that wonderful aloof and sniffy tone he used to use to lampoon sponsors on his American TV program:

"I did not say actors were cattle. I said they should be treated like cattle."

Midori, a 3 hour movie about a ship on the ocean and she DIDN'T have to go to the bathroom? Wow! That IS remarkable.

LOL! If you take a kid, that would be about five minutes. Then they'd cry because the movie was over. The first movie my daughter ever sat through with me with no "interruptions" was Titanic. :)
