thanks for the response, quantam dragon, i appreciate it.

actually, i just returned from my class and it turns out that ms office 2002 is compatible with the 2003 version. the speech that the teacher made was geared towards 2007 users, which apparently has some compatibility issues.

so, i'm golden.

i'm currently taking a computer class and we are required to use MS office 2003, i have v.2002. i was wondering if anyone knew if any of these programs are compatible. compatibility is the reason we are supposed to use 2003 (that's what the computer lab uses).

i have heard really great things about open office.

i'm going to talk to my teacher about these tonight.

Ssuite (cq) Office's The Fifth Element (Yes, "Ssuite" is spelled correctly, and, no, we're not talking about a Bruce Willis movie.), which has come from South Africa to take on the Colossus of Redmond, is one of several suites from Ssuite. It aggressively tried to outdo Office with more features, simpler interface, and, of course, by being free !

The Fifth Element is a collection of office applications with a wider range than those in MS Office. The Fifth Element includes a browser, tools for managing LANs, holding chats and making calls using VoIP. It provides a drawing module, photo and album editors, sound recorders, and MP3 and video players. There's a search engine, a sort engine, envelope printer, encryption, and a chess game, for more than 30 programs overall. And if it's not exactly the right combination for you, Ssuite Office has several other office software packages of various complexities, all free.

For all it's breadth, The Fifth Element is shallow--and that's meant in the nicest sense. Most operations require you to go no more than a couple of clicks into a menu. The most common tasks are neatly displayed at the top levels of the screens, making for quick learning and use. The are a welcome relief from the madly swirling, morphing menus in Microsoft Office 2007.

One reason for the simplicity, over and beyond making the Fifth Element a snap to use, is that most of the programs appear to be frankenware, pieced together from publicly available code. That makes them a kludge, but they're very nice kludges.

However according to some reviews, this program is intrusive and nearly impossible to uninstall.

Others say that it couldn’t open a file that Word 2007 could and that Netsurfer was a pain, plainly said.

One reviewer on http://www.download.com/SSuite-Office-The-Fifth-Element/3640-2064_4-10801783.html?v=1&sb=1
even said :

Desktop hijacker / no uninstall format

This program was never allowed to be used as it attempted to hijack my desktop and did not provide an uninstall option.

Hijacked my desktop setting and over-rode the settings. I had to uninstall at registry level to remove program. I would not recommend this program to anyone.

Because of those concerns, this program should not be taken lightly.

For myself, I also cannot recommend this software!

If you need an office program and don’t want to pay big bucks to Micro$oft, OpenOffice is the way to go.

Of course, if that's too big for you and you just want a free open-source word processor, you can try Abiword.

Here is the link for it : http://www.abisource.com/

You can find other interesting freeware word processors and suites here : http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/productivity/fwwordprocessing.html

And freeware/open source programs of all kinds here : http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/

hope that helps

Cheers

Great post indeed Paulga !

I'm just adding a few details to it.

The official base for the software is : http://www.openoffice.org/

There is a forum at : http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/

You can download it in many languages here : http://download.openoffice.org/other.html#en-US

You have a USB portable version here : http://portableapps.com/apps/office/openoffice_portable

You can find an alternative (but still free) version called OxygenOffice Professional which contains more extras like templates, cliparts, samples, fonts and VBA support here : http://ooop.wiki.sourceforge.net/

Note: http://portableapps.com/ has many other USB portable programs !

@guest32 : Ms office is too costly for " le commun des mortels (common mortals) " and depending of the version, is incredibly bloated. Which Lotus suite are you talking about ? The latest one from Lotus/IBM is based on OpenOffice !

Ciao for now ... ;)
