Couscous is a Berber dish consisting of spherical granules made by rolling and shaping moistened semolina wheat and then coating them with finely ground wheat flour.

Amaranth and quinoa are called pseudograins because of their flavor and cooking similarities to grains. These are dicot plant seeds, and both contain exceptionally complete protein for plant sources. Besides protein, amaranth grain provides a good source of dietary fiber and dietary minerals such as iron, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, and especially manganese.

Amaranth grain is usually from 4 main species out of 3 recognized sub-genera and 70 species collectively known as pigweed.

ask your local stores if they can order quinoa, that can be a good tactic.

I looked up Amaranth for gary, that's the first I'd heard of it. him either.

I can dig the just-broke-in, our '97 saturn sw2 wagon has 110,000 miles on it and doing extremely well, great aside from developing an intermittent power drain in the seatbelt chime wiring early this year. I put a battery disconnect in until I narrowed it down, then disabled the chime. got it as a dealer test-drive car with 7700 on the clock, uses a quart of oil every few months but that's it.

until then we had an '82 honda accord we racked up 300k miles on and still got 31 mpg then.

one thing we never had to worry about- this place was less than 25 grand back in '92, so the value can't drop much! (also not enough equity to be worth borrowing against, either...)

Don't have Raley's out here. Wonder if I need to call some local health food stores? I went grocery shopping today and couldn't find it, even asked the manager and he suggested cous cous (sp?). Read the box and it wasn't the same at all. There are some shops in Asheville that do sell organic type products, but don't want to go to Asheville.. too much traffic.. I'm spoiled with country living!

What's amaranth??

As for no house payment, we have 3 years and 5 months to go on that, I've been counting down. April 2013 is the magic date ... at least our car is finally paid off! It's a 2002 and only has 32,000 miles on it.. we've barely broken it in!

I got the pans on the weekly trip to the dump over in yoncalla. I want to get up by the water station and get a pan of this valley.

eating cheap is doable, the old associations just drive me to find something else cheap when I can.

we're down to once a month for the basics, and we're real glad we don't have a house payment and do have a good economical car that's paid off. terri's doctor's appointments hurt in gas even so.

the economy worldwide is tanking big time and probably is gonna get lots worse before it gets better, aargh.

Great panoramas! Gee, never thought about the corn meal section.
Hey, you don't have to feel like your dumpster-diving.. being frugal is important in this economy! Everyone is on a 'limited' income, prices go higher, and income stays the same, so as long as something fills the gut and is nourishing, go for it! It's a matter of survival!
We grocery shop once a week and usually get pretty much the same things, but I've noticed from one week to the next, each time I write a check it comes to almost $20 more each week, and that's with shopping the sales, and buy one/get one free of ONLY things I normally use and then I only get the one so it's half price.
Christmas is going to be mighty lean this year with 4 kids, 10 grands, and 5 great grands, that's all I'm going to say! I recently heard that retail sales are the lowest they've been in 8 years. The dollar can only stretch so far!

I'm not sure what section- I found it in bulk foods, around the soy flour, corn meal and granola. I've not noticed it on the shelves, but I haven't been looking. my first thought would be around the rice, oats, etc. ethnic foods, perhaps? we cut back to like 4 stores total (costco, sherm's thunderbird market where I found it, wal-mart and petsmart) aside from the local store which has nothing beyond basics- $4.50+ a gallon milk style basics- long before I'd heard of quinoa. a health food store? I'll have to ask around. dunno what's in your area.

most corn won't pop either- it has a different hull.

yeah, SOS is cheap- with hamburger instead of chipped beef even more so, but potatoes and beans (unless I have something to disguise it) make me feel broke. broker. dumpster-diving to survive broker. it just brings back bad memories.

Hello again.. all the links worked for me. The balloon turkey, the frozen fern, and a great shot of that grasshopper.
Now, as for the quinoa, what section of the grocery store would I even begin to look for it? The rice section, spaghetti section, the cooking cereal section, or what? Give me a hint, sounds interesting to both of us to try.
And as for lean times, I learned the hard way that you cannot pop beans like you can popcorn! I did burn the pot tho'. And 'SOS', (creamed chipped beef), over potatoes or toast still tastes pretty good! And cheap too!

works main well for gravy bedding, last night was hamburger gravy and the consensus was we liked it under that at least as well as biscuits or bread- I'm saving what I have left of it for thanksgiving dinner, as I really don't like the traditional (for my wife, anyway) mashed praties- and I think it'd go great as a counterpoint to the yams we'll be having as well.

[beans and potatoes I started disliking overall during a real lean time as a teen when my folks had to use them for the main dish for dinner a lot, like for most of 2 years, after my dad got hurt]

not really, closer to semolina. not cream of wheat or couscous, sorta in between..

here's a closeup.

it's <nibble> (just woke up, having some leftovers- good warm or cold) less sticky and has 3 distinct textures- the outer hull is still a bit elastic on the seeds that are still intact, the germ (the little squiggles) which is a bit crunchy- not hard, more like tiny bits of chinese stir-fry, and the little globes of the rest of the seed, while not mushy, is soft. the germ has a bit more or a slightly different flavor. a bit aromatic, nice light flavor.

you're supposed to be able to increase flavor by dry-toasting it in a skillet before water cooking, though I haven't tried that yet.

I used 1 cup quinoa and 2 cups water last night and after steaming I measured a volume of 3-1/2 cups cooked.

gluten free too. and you can get it to start making sprouts in under 2 days if I recall right.

cool pics, paulga- haven't looked at many- been working on computers and such for the last several days- some problems have been found and fixed, others still driving me nuts, and several areas I'm waiting on the hardware to be up before I can start beating the software into submission.

found some quinoa (alternate spelling quinua, pronounced KEEN-wah or KEE-no-uh- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quinoa and http://www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/afcm/quinoa.html for an overview) in the bulk foods section of a market we buy stuff at once a month, and it's a right tasty alternative to rice and more nutritious as well.

what really impressed me is how little of it makes a fair bulk of cooked food, while being really filling. I have a steamer, so that's how I cooked it.

this is half a cup of quinoa and a cup of water before steaming and after.

my estimate is after cooking I got at least 2 cups, possibly more. really a great break from white rice- different texture, lots more flavor.

I'd suggest trying it out if you're tired of the same-old or want a better balanced side dish.

I rather think 'white rabbit' might make a good theme...

back a couple decades or so I used to set stuff up in the front window with laser-lit patterns and targets, and on foggy nights I'd dig out my laser toys box and set up mirrors and rotating crystals around half my apartment complex.

the results were gratifyingly startling to passers-by. I gotta dig out the case and see what I can do, though I need an ac supply for the pointers. :)

I wouldn't dare- 'mushroom' as a term is sooo fuzzy that even species that look virtually the same are farther apart than a doorknob and a dockyard bollard- and it'd be unfair to use something I don't know what it is for that.

I spot any whose stems turn from white to blue when bruised I might have a clue what family they're in.

the tip on using the flash I found while finding out how very, very little I know about the subject on fungus fruit on a mushroom website.

interesting tip for photographing mushrooms- use the flash, it actually brings out warmer coloration.

sorry, I had to think which ones were in the boy and fender shop. ;)

I've had tripods and such for ages [did I tell you I like cheap laser pointers? 'cuz the tubes were a bear to pull out of laserdisc players and were clunky. but cool.] and so far the most I've spent for one is 9 dollars.

the ancient quick-set 6000 and the really old japanese telesar packpod I got at yard sales for a total of 7 bucks, for holding 'em still. way back..

I got a couple of 4" tabletop 'pods for 99 cents, and the local dollar store has the plastic ball-head tripods like the ones I took those photos with. for a buck.

I will admit, a good-enough-for-prosumer tripod will take a 50+ clam shot buying new, the spindly one I got for 8 is 25 or 30 now- but 20 will get a used one a bit older but better built, or often a wal-mart new one.

the big $9 ambico I got at a local yard sale was built for a video camera, but...

so, in one lump, half a grand or less from a dead stop. but- you got a computer. OK, that's a WAG. but they're cheap. thrift stores, garage sales, ebay- there are plenty of places to find, if you look.

Pro? nooo, I don't think so. just a frustrated packrat and JOAT, really. to me photos are keys to remembering life happened- I don't all too often. neat images are a side effect.

um, this computer is a 1999 laptop, $100 off ebay plus a replacement keyboard, $10 or so. 5 for usb2, 9 for the card reader. 75 for 160 gigs usb connected. it's more complicated, but that's about how I use it as a photo machine. few ziplock bags, gallon size. better for about the same now, of course.. it was old when I got it, but things change fast.

tripods?

well, lemme make that the next message block.

Well, digital's cool. Still, I hadn't gone over the fact that you have to buy a computer too, if you don't already have one.
A pro photographer? Need a tripod.
All the things I've listed have come to, ooooh $1000 dollars!.
Then what if it breaks?
Then better cameras all the time, and you wanna upgrade?
Sheesh!
Though if you have all of those, you're OK.

ok, checking my facts [at the door, I oughta look first] I put in doubt my derision at the price for developing until I find the numbers. digital I stand by, though.

after all, I just said I haven't had film developed in a decade. Oops. my bad.

--------------------edit ---------------

at 15 cents I oughta start gathering the rooks as I'm pretty sure in bulk y'all can tell me where to underbid it.

go ahead, how much is developing?

I suppose it might be different if you use a camera like my daughter- take a few snaps, let it sit with the Li-ion battery dead for 6 months, plug it in to charge without using it for 3 months and then complain the (non-AA) battery pack is shot and costs too much.

but if you really take pictures when you can.... gimme digital.

goody.. think back to the days when all we could do was get a roll of 12, 24, 36 film for pictures

ayep, that mostly ended in 1998 when carol gave me the C200, took me 2 years to afford a card that could hold more than 8 pictures (4 megabytes) at a time. now I can store 560 in the half of the 512 meg compactflash card it can 'see'- and I don't use it.

Progress.

however, 37000+ pix by last april sure saved a lot of film, eh?.

still need to finish the roll of ASA400 film left in my nikon easypix 35mm.

nowadays with the canon I could run 580+ shots a card if I just had to be out that long. and I have 2 cards.

One thing that hasn't changed, he he, we have to pay for print paper, if we want it hard copy

nope, the few I want to get hard copy I go to wal-mart and for about 18 cents each I have 'em. big difference is not needing a lab to get another positive print with 'digital film'.

you upload to a computer, which is free, but still we have the problem of hard drive space.

yeah, they do take up hdd space fairly fast until burned to optical media and cataloged. I use single-layer DVD's at about 36 cents each; $35 will get a burner that does just great. I've worn 1 cd-r/rw burner and 1 dvd-r/rw burner out over a decade- and gotten easily a thousand discs burned and multiply reread with each. cheeep at twice the price.

Then there's the price for the camera itself. If it's good, than it can cost over one-hundred dollars.

I've got a bit different scale for 'good'; the HP M517 gary gave me in april only cost $60, and if the tripod socket hadn't broke I'd still be racking up excellent pictures at a good clip on it. I still use it in a limited fashion pending case repairs since HP doesn't consider it worth fixing. personally I called it good and other positive things- and it took about 14,000 photos in 4 months.

I'm more likely to say the digital-slr-half-grand range is where performance gets awesome, but this just-under-$200 canon A720is not-really-a-prosumer with the free CHDK enhancements added I put in the category of really really good as in can't-get-much-better-without-needing-separate-lenses. and as I noted, 10k pix already, going strong, and both these cameras work on AA rechargeables- so electrons are cheap.

Usually SD cards, they can cost up to $40

well, they also last a good long time. mine are lifetime warranted and a pair of 2 gig 100x cards cost me 38 bucks. sandisk ultra II's.

So, in the long run, developed film cameras might be cheaper, really

not from where I'm looking from. pretty much (very unlike film cameras) the costs are front-loaded, once you have the cam, memory, and 'puter, ongoing costs are damn near zero for a lot of return.

each dvd holds 2600 5.1 mp snaps from the M517, or well over a thousand 8 mp from the A720is- 36 cents divided by 1000 photos is $0.00036... err... I call that real cheap.

assuming 15 cents a photo developing (riiiight) and figuring free film comes to a cool $150 per thousand shots... by that measure this $200 canon has taken over $1500 worth of photos, and since 99.99% of the pix I pass around are by the internet, saved a lot of scanning time- or a lot of postage.

show me a film camera that comes close to those economics.

please. I wanna watch.

The digital era...
One thing that hasn't changed, he he, we have to pay for print paper, if we want it hard copy.
You'd think with all the technology, they'd think of a way to get free hard copys, of photos.
Still, you upload to a computer, which is free, but still we have the problem of hard drive space.
Sooner or later, you'll rum out, if your'e a picture freak.
Of course, you can put it on CD, or DVD, but (ignoring the fact that some may not have DVD or CD writers, which costs money,) CDs and DVDs also cost money. Then there's the price for the camera itself. If it's good, than it can cost over one-hundred dollars. Than the digital card you put in the camera. Usually SD cards, they can cost up to $40.
So, in the long run, developed film cameras might be cheaper, really. :)
