Copmom, I embrace the same rationalization (mantra) for clutter... "If I get rid of it, then I'll need it."

Still can't find my last working a/b switch so 2 PCs can use 1 printer. I'd be willing to trade you a switch for a carton of dried up HP plotter pens and a year's subscription to Excel 1.0 or Inside DOS (circa 1991) but the bidding can't get any richer.

Thanks maizeydaze I managed to get a Win XP and Vista to join the wireless Dlink, without searching for a 15 year old. lol

When I went in to the router to check 'why' the problem, it prompted me to update my firmware.

First I saved my settings and undated the firmware. Then reloaded my settings. Well some settings uploaded others reverted to 'default'. But didn't tell me which ones...

That's when the investigation began. Upshot, I disabled filters (three times) and reset my 'key' (using the same key) reboot the router a number of times. It works! yeah..

Now all is well here.

Next I'll 'network' the whole lot.

And that will probably set me back a few days.

It's OK Rune.. sometimes things get a bit confusing. I've got a big plastic bag in the closet with all the parts/cables, adapters, etc. you mention that are now mostly all obsolete. Even a couple of A/B switches in case you want to use 2 printers with one connection. I think it's time for me to do some spring cleaning, but surer than anything, if I get rid of something, I'll find a need for it.

Sorry, Copmom, didn't mean to imply it wouldn't work PC to PC. Blame a certain GAOTD poster who paints idyllic pictures of working on a laptop from home while relaxing by a pond for making me even consider a laptop.
I'm surrounded by 5 generations of PC's that won't talk to each other. (last time I got 2 to communicate was about 15 years ago using a DOS command and 2 separate phone lines)
I'm not a hardware guy, so my collection of old cables (null-modems, proprietary HP, ethernet, transatlantic, etc) is useless. I'm stumped when it comes to -
pairing up cables to ports - beyond identifying male and female plugs, which is surprisingly easy :-)
not to mention -
matching dozens of pin configs
hard drive incompatibilities (SATA, ATA, MBA, USA, PDA, AAA)
USB1 to USB1.1 to USB2
hardwire, infrared, sonar, vulcan mindmeld
It's enough to make a geek giddy or a grown man cry... and I'm not feeling giddy.

Well, that's kind of what I thought maizey! Anyway, I got the registration, then set it to download, went and fixed supper, watched some TV, etc., and now it is downloaded.

UH OH.. now do I have to worry about this program? Just did the installation and McAfee popped up with a high security warning, a PUP called "PWCrack-PWdump" in c:\program files\laplink\remover\copypwd.dll
On the warning I clicked do not allow.

calmier and anyone else who's interested, here is a link to the PDF Quick Start Guide which I just uploaded to Scribd. It should be way faster that trying to get it from LapLink's site right now.

I hired a 15 year old to get my router to work with my new Vista laptop. I think you may have to reset the firmware settings to "default" in your D-Link router. That's what the kid said he did. I wasn't here to see him at work though.

Rune, sorry about you luck. If you got your username and password set up, the code should be saved with your info at LapLink. You can still download it tomorrow.

Jeez, that site is almost as slow as a Chinese security key response. I finally got registered (at least it said that I was in the Step 1 box), but when I moved on to Step 3, the bloody product and serial number was BLANK and there's NO download button visible.
Granted, I really don't expect to get a laptop until they start giving them away at Goodwill or one falls out of a passing jet's cargo hold, but grrrrrrrrrrrr anyway.
FWIW, check your "communication prefs" because when I did, they'd REenabled the product and 3rd party spam buttons.

I was just on with their 'tech support chatting' and he said because I have my serial number I can download tomorrow or Saturday or next week, they swamped today.

I was interrupted so many times

That's a good question, which machine do I install it on?

Also, do I really need the special USB laplink Cables?

He said I could use a removeable device to transfer the programs and files. Sure hope he's right

I was talking to Noel.

wish me luck, it's so new to me.

another silly question. how do I find the MAC number on a new Vista laptop? I'm trying to access my wireless and can't. And I'm using the correct "key" so maybe if I register the MAC number from the laptop with the router (Dlink 'N') that'll help..... Or any suggestions. Please
