Thanks Robert.. guess I just wasn't thinking. On Paragon Drive Backup, it's V8.00 and just clicked on top (tools), and opened the Recovery Media Wizard and burned a DVD from that. Phew!

Hi Copmom,

If your active drive C: crashes ,you should use a bootable cd/dvd with the program on it to restore your drive(from the image you created on F: )

There must be an option to create such a bootable cd/dvd in paragon partition manager.
Btw this paragon 2005 does it mention being version 8.00 or 7.00?

Damian.. thanks for the report! Another dumb question.. if I did a drive backup to F:, and C: crashes, then I couldn't use the backup without having the program to restore it, correct? So, should I also install the original program on the F: drive as well?

Thanks Copmom and Whiterabbit-uk.

Okay, so I restored the image I made with Paragon Drive Backup successfully. Although you can save your image while windows is running, to restore you have to burn srw_en.iso to CD which you can make via the Tool bar / Wizards / Recovery Media Builder.

My first burn was not successful (the computer would not boot from the disc for recovery), so I burned the iso using Image Burn (which was successfuly burned and operational). Obviously any app you have that can burn an iso image to CD should work (good idea to verify the burn though).

srw_en.iso is located in:
C:\Program Files\Paragon Software\Drive Backup 8 Special Edition\ISO
should you wish to use a third party programme to burn it.

So the recovery CD programme starts when you boot from your CD/DVD drive and allows you to select the partion to be restored and the image to be restored to it (Similar to other applications such as this one).

I did not see an option to restore from a Network drive when selecting the backed up image (I had mine on a different partition on the same hard drive and if your image was burned to CD/DVD's you can restore from them). It looks as though you can create self booting restoration discs as well, but I didn't try that yet and due to being an SE version of the software, I'm not sure of the functionality of that option. Another day for that experiment!

On a different note Paragon ISO Burner for Drive Backup is just a programme to also burn iso images to disc. Also Paragon Recovery CD for Hard Disk Manager [20.4MB] (also available at http://www.pcpro.co.uk/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=203313 is a programme that burns a bootable CD also for backup and recovery purposes, copy purposes and even defragmentation.

Definitely recommend reading the help file but don't count on everything, due to it being for severel versions of the programme (so some things don't apply). I only test this type of software after I back up everything to get used to it before relying on it. One false move and...

A good day or night to all,

Hi rezidue,
Thanks for the explanation! I think (??), in my case, since I already have some things on my second HD, I might be better off with drive backup for the simple reason that when I was clicking around, under their instructions, for Drive COPY, it called for a blank hard drive! I do already have things on my 2nd HD, and do not want to lose those. Of course I could just use my external HD that's 300 GB and that might be the answer for Drive Copy.
They did refer a lot to partitions, and I don't have any of my drives partitioned! And you're right, who replaces HD very often? Me? Yes, in fact I had to get mine replaced about 2 months ago since it died. Luckily it was my 2nd HD.. but I just know the C: is going to go one of these days. It's my understanding that a HD usually only last about 3 years! (Designed obsolescence).
Also, regarding your FYI... that ISO burner sounds almost as good.. if a DVD would be large enough to hold everything that's on the C: drive!
I'm going to get that ISO burner.. will follow your directions.

Hi Copmom!

Not a stupid question at all as I was wondering the same thing at first.

Drive Copy is to basically clone your existing hard drive to another one (eg. if you were upgrading your hard drive to a larger one or if your existing hard drive were failing then you could copy everything exactly as it is to the new drive then swap it with the old one). You need another drive to send your existing hard drive contents to the new one.

Drive Backup is to make an image/images of an existing partition/partitions to restore should you need to. The image can be saved to another partition or backup drive or disc.

So Drive Backup would be more useful as you don't replace your hard drive every day.

FYI: I also found that in the start menu once Drive Backup has been installed there is a link to download Paragon ISO Burner for Drive Backup [4.9MB]. The link no longer works but I found that also at

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=203313

It's important to read the post carefully as the download is a password protected zip but the password is given right at the end of Alan_EPU's post (there's another download too for something else but I haven't installed it yet to see what it is or if it's useful).

I made a backup image using Drive Backup yesterday and am going to restore it today after I save some stuff (just in case). I'll post back here when I know if it's successfull or not.

Hope that helps explain their uses.
Regards,
Damian.
