Hi Bubby,

Tried all of that, the only thing I can't answer for is my ISP but I have always used the same one.

I have been downloading on and off from GOTD for well over a year, until I spoke to you a while back and you made the comment about proxies I had never had a problem, even since I have downloaded and activated programs with my proxies in place.
Yesterday from my first to last attempts at activation was about 9 hours, in the end I gave up, so I lost the program.

Looking through this forum activation appears to be an ongoing problem, even if it is only for a minority of users.
Let me ask a question, would it not be possible to put an activation link on each days page next to the download link, instead of putting a file in with the download?
Because it seems to me that the problem is not connecting with the site through a browser but through the activation files.

GOTD is a great idea and a good site which frequently offers some worthwhile programs but the activation problems add a real negative to something that is mainly positive.

Regards, Pilgrim.

Update, Immunise and scan your pc with Spybot Search & Destroy.
Check that all other background programs (including in system tray) are closed down (just run your browser).
Close any non-standard Windows Services that might be running.
Once you are sure nothing weird is running on your PC try again.

Failing all the above - perhaps your ISP is running a proxy?

PS. Where was I ?? In a time zone, far far away.

Ah, that narrows things down a bit. Sorry, can't offer advice beyond what BubbyCo's already offered. Sounds like overkill to use that program to "keep track" of other programs. If Windows' Task Mgr doesn't do the trick, have you tried SysInternals Process Explorer, or maybe I'm unclear about what you're trying to track.

RunesageMagik

Hi, sorry about that.
It's the (in)famous "Fatal error: Key is Invalid" problem.

As to your other comments, the page I've never heard of, and as to my system,
XP-SP3. Pentium D 3.73ghz. 4gb ram.

NO! I do not NEED this s/w but I found the previous version useful for keeping track of various other programs I run.

The place on the brick wall is that I've had activation problems before, followed Bubby's advice and turned off proxies, problem went away.
This time tried that and everything else I can think of and still get the same error.

Well, pilgrim, you've told us what you've done, and how you feel, but you haven't provided anything specific about the problem(s) you're encountering.

We might assume you were unable to complete a download, only I think you're suggesting you reached the activate.exe point. (or were you just being proactive?)

You don't say what OS you're using, so we've no way to know for sure if the new version of the s/w is compatible. You don't mention getting an error message, or a BSOD or anything. There are some valuable comments over on today's giveaway's Crazy Comments Theatre page about the usefulness of the s/w based on your PC and current RAM, but you didn't mention whether you've seen them or if they're helpful. Quite frankly, tweaking isn't likely to make a noticeable difference unless it slows down performance.

Where exactly on the brick wall are you banging your head???

They may not be apropos, but I hope you or someone finds these links helpful -

I have spent the last two hours trying to Activate today's download.
I have turned off my proxies.
I have made Activate.exe an exception in both my Firewall and Internet Options.
I have tried three seperate downloads by different means, cleaning my HDD in between.
I have even uninstalled the previous version I got from GOTD.

I am now thoroughly p****d off.

Bubby, where are you?
