Its always interesting to hear what others use, and the problems with said programs, however every computer acts or reacts in a different manner, as per your program settings, so while i could be happy with a certain program on my pc and would advise you to install it, your pc might not suit it, ie, if you had Windows Firewall and Comodo Anti Virus, your Windows Security would tell you that Comodo was up to date....and active, if you then uninstalled Comodo Anti Virus and installed Kaspersky Anti Virus, there is a 80% chance Windows Firewall would still tell you Comodo Anti Virus was up to date....or reverse those installs/uninstalls then it gets even worse,Windows Firewall will then always tell you you have Kaspersky installed and up to date......because No 1....Kaspersky is hard to completely uninstall....very hard, it entails trying Add and remove...it wont delete it, various uninstallers....wont work, unless the uninstaller made a copy of your hard drive prior to install, in the end you go to regedit, make a wrong move in there and its pc freeze time, No 2....Windows Firewall is very basic...very, so which is at fault the Firewall because it does not detect, or the Anti Virus because its failed to send signals to the Firewall....conclusion, you keep trying various compilations until one day you get compatible programs.....then you sit back and do exactly what i am doing now....am i satisfied? no i want to delve its the nature of the beast......but dont we love it.

I use Norton and Spyware doctor, some free thing like CCleaner, and ZA, WOT, siteadvisor*, and linkscanner and what Paulga said here's a good way to secure your computer: http://home.comcast.net/~SupportCD/SecureXP.html

*Site advisor may mark giveawayoftheday because of some virus problem. GAOTD does not put viruses into the downloads so it is safe. If you have a virus problem post on the sticky topic of virus problems.

I use Commodo firewall Pro. Used to use Zone Alarm and don't really notice any difference between the two, in fact Zone Alarm is still on my old laptop which doesn't connect very often now. I have AVG on my old laptop but at the moment I am using AntiVir on this one. However, it now refuses to download its daily updates unless I am at the internet cafe using broadband, so I am switching to the new AVG that one of the 'moms' recommended in another thread.

Also use Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware. That Windows Malicious whatever that downloads automatically with the Windows updates actually found a problem that no other program did a couple of days ago, have no idea what, a box popped onto the screen that told me it had deleted a serious risk. Other than that I have had absolutely no problems and never had any on the old laptop either which I used for 3 years with the same stuff as above apart from Zone Alarm.

creamypretzel............nice one ! a friend of mine keeps his in his dirty socks wardrobe, even my dogs wont go in there !

Paali...........i use layered protection, only one firewll of course, but Anti Virus Program, only one active in realtime with HIPS and email in and out scan, the others are on demand/online scan, yes you are correct about Comodo Firewall Pro its stood all tests with no leaks plus its free.

You should never use more than one virus protection program and one firewall. Using several at the same time actually makes your system more at risk!

I would recommend Commodo Firewall, it's the best free firewall there is. As an antivirus use AVG OR Avast. Both score very high at test and use very little resources. In addition Ad Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy should help you get rid of spyware and such. That should make your system pretty safe.

Naomi is a nice little tool. I've used it in the past but had to uninstall it since it kept closing pages that were ok. But if you want to be better safe than sorry, I would go for that as well.

<grin> Macintosh.

Actually, since I run Windows on a virtual disk within my iMac, I need a heavy-duty firewall and a/v. Kaspersky seems to be doing the job.

Then, I use 'Naomi' as an internet filter, particularly for the sake of the grandkids. It is very effective at blocking undesirable images and questionable sites, requires no configuration and works with all service providers. Best of all, it is not a resource hog.

I got a nasty trojan last week, (It was my own fault) so I'm more paranoid then ever about protecting my computer, what do you use?

I use Online Armor for a firewall, AntiVir, Avast!, Threatfire, and Spyware Terminator for active internet use, and use SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot, AVG and CCleaner to clean up my computer....
By the way, I'm really impressed with Online Armor firewall, love it....
