Installed Service pack 3, it took about one hour, no problems, i have to admit i took the quick download through windows update, only because it would take into consideration my present configurations, which exclude many of Microsoft programs, however i do intend to download ( when i have spare time ) Windows XP Service Pack 3 " the CD.

The full list of XP SP3 fixes http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946480

YES, it is a rollup of all released security updates since SP2 (little gain in that for those who keep updated).
It also adds a couple of extra features, improving black hole detection, and network security.
It also includes many unreleased fixes, such as KB888111 (HD-Audio bus driver v1.0a).

There are two "large" downloads available:

1. The well known offline install - Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers (316.4MB)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4&DisplayLang=en

2. The CD Install - Windows XP Service Pack 3 - ISO-9660 CD Image File (544.9MB)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2fcde6ce-b5fb-4488-8c50-fe22559d164e&displaylang=en
This is an UPDATE CD, what you would get if you ordered SP3 on CD, not a re-install, not sure how it differs from throwing the previous one onto a CD yourself, as it's over 200MB larger.

The smallest way, for an individual machine, is to allow Windowsupdate to do it.

@calmier - if you are getting a microsoft alert telling you it is ready for download, and you are "public", then I guess it is ready for the public.

Does it contain any problems? Probably. Most software does. But I'd say either Microsoft doesn't know about them, or they are so obscure or insignificant that Microsoft doesn't consider it a problem. (There are still problems with SP2 by the way, so don't let that put you off upgrading).

I would suggest downloading the file separately rather than via "Microsoft Upgrade" - so you can burn SP3 to a CD/DVD for installation at a later date should it prove necessary (ie. A system rebuild etc). SP3 is large enough to make redownloading a nuisance.

Slipstreaming is creating a new "build" of your XP installation disc, that includes SP3. Then when setting up your PC with this disc - the SP3 files are installed rather than the original SP1 or SP2 files. At the end of the install you have XP SP3 - instead of XP SP1 (and then having to install SP3 as a separate task). Basically SP3 is installed with XP in a single operation, as opposed to a separate step (slipstreaming is much faster and less hassle to install).

Just received a notice from my updates "you have XP SP3 waiting to download".

I thought I read here that it's not ready for the public yet. And still contains problems, is it ready?

Also, what is 'slipstreaming"? I think that is what I was reading. Can someone please explain this to me, and should I be buring a 'boot disk ' for XP SP3?

Beware, Paulga, that keyboard was infected by the notorious Watercress virus. It's all part of agrochem monopolist Monsanto's secret evil plan.
Phase 1 was forcing farmers to buy GMO seed so they can dump Roundup on crops. [IMHO, pervasive monocultures and that herbicide pose a huge threat to ecosystems, food supplies and aquifers around the world.]
Phase 2 (Codenamed Weed Whacker Hacker) will force PC-users to download RoundUp for the PC just to keep keyboards chlorophyll-free!
Far cry from the old days when you could just pop a dirty keyboard in the dishwasher, eh?

Even if you opt not to till and fertilize your keyboard, make people think you've got a dirty, sweaty job. Just smudge your monitor.

Hi, there guest32,
Surprisingly enough, the "news" I posted as a hyperlink to PCWorld was about as fresh off the press as one could ask for (i.e., Tuesday, May 06, 2008 1:20 PM PDT)
It 'splained that Billie Behemoth's crack team of CYA experts were hard at work isolating all potential victims in a clean room.

BTW- You might wanna try a can of this to take care of that hyperventilating stuck exclamation point key problem. Here are some easy-to-follow steps.

Looks like Billie Behemoth's ready to try WinXP SP3 again.
It's now on the updater. Still haven't patched the RMS bug, so they must be confident their tech support call center can handle the volume of complaints if they just skip those users for now. More information for the update .

Nope. If you actually read the article - this is a specific incompatibility (As I posted yesterday - HERE

Are you running Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System?

If you answered Yes - there may be some problems for you running XP SP3.
If you answered No - SP3 should be just fine for you (there have been no published problems - you can install now, and perhaps apply the FINAL Final SP3 When it is re-released).

Please don't run around trying to create some terror story when none exists. (unless you are running RMS).

What went on to your computer is a rogue AV. Get an AV that's not rogue and delete any traces of it. Try malwarebytes for rogue AVs. I'm still wondering why everyone thinks this is the whole SP3, THIS IS JUST AN RELEASE CANDIDATE, i say again. the full is only seventy something mb, you'll have to uninstall it to download the full SP3, If you slipstream it into your XP disk, that's a stupid idea! Why does everyone hate Vista, I have it and it doesn't seem to bad http://www.news.com/8301-13860_3-9933555-56.html?tag=nefd.lede is it because of the design?

By the way, I also agree with you about the music. I already paid for 1,600 singles from 1972-1986. I will NOT pay for them again just so I can put them on a CD. But I WILL have them on CD. ;)

WhiteRabbit......What you mention at the end of your post has already happened. There was a company that would infect people's PCs and then try to sell them anti-virus software to get rid of the infections.

I accidently clicked on an ad the other day, and it proceeded to tell me that it was scanning my PC and had found all kinds of bad stuff, which is ridiculous, as I am better protected than they could imagine. Fear is power and money. You scare people and they will do what you want (just think Bush and WMDs).

My question to you is: If you really don't need VISTA, which you said in your post, then why on earth did you buy it? You know as well as I that when a new OS comes out that a lot of your old stuff won't be able to work on it. The only reason I have it is because when I walked in to buy my PC, it was three days after the release of VISTA, and all the XP PC's had been pulled and sent back.....so I had no choice if I wanted to buy at that location at the price I wanted.

As far as them only being interested in our hard earned money....that has ALWAYS been true. That's why new cars come out every year, even though they could make them every 5 years if they wanted. And that's why new Versions of Windows come out. They are never happy just making a profit from the sales of new PCs. They need people to update.....and they need software makers to re-make their games with the new operating system in mind, which means that they have to pay for the license to do so.

It's just a never-ending cycle. New OS...new versions of software.....new OS....newer versions of software. They don't care if we complain. In fact, they love hearing us complain. It means that their ploy is working.

I actually like Vista, but it's not worth having if I can't run a lot of my favorite games (and applications)which I paid hard cash for. I think it's appalling that we are basically being forced into buying new software that we don't really need. (and in some cases new hardware) My Nero authoring program worked perfectly well with XP as do all of my games and other programs that I've found useful over the past several years.

I want Vista to work, especially as I paid for a copy, but at what cost??? I've invested thousands of pounds (double that if you think in dollars) in software over the past several years. Why should I have to re buy all that again. (Just like with the music I'm having to re-buy because I could no longer buy cartridges for my record deck)

As someone wrote somewhere it could very well be that Vista is going to be the second ME. January 2010 isn't very far away, so lets all upgrade now ....then have to yet again upgrade in 2 years time and fork out yet another shed full of cash after we've just about got used to Vista and replaced all those outdated programs that worked fine with Vista. I don't think so.

Lets just hope that it will be compatible with everything XP, (and Vista) :) But I doubt it as the developers are only interested in our hard earned money. :)

Just a thought (and this is probably come out of my morphine soaked brain), there are now quite a lot of software developers creating anti virus and anti malware programs, adaware deterctors and cleaners and other security programs. Wouldn't it be funny if it was actually the developers themselves that were creating these malware attacks in the first place; what a hoax that would be.

p.s.

can you tell I'm having a bad day :(

WhiteRabbit.....I actually like XP, and when I bought this PC 3 days after Vista came out, I was quite disappointed because I really wanted XP on it. But I also LOVED Windows 3.1 when Windows 95 came out. I still prefer XP to Vista. But I face the fact that no matter now much I like XP, Vista is the future....at least until their new OS comes out in Jan 2010 (Called Windows 7 right now).

The thing that gets to me is how many people are constantly saying they HATE Vista. I have Vista, and I really don't see what the problem is, unless they just have a lot of programs that won't run or upgrade to run on Vista. But that happens every time a new Windows OS comes out.

I honestly believe that there are really TWO things happening here that are causing such an uproar over Vista. First, people are actually having problems with Vista, as happens every time a new OS is introduced. But I think there is another thing happening that has helped to increase the Vista hatred. The last year to 18 months have been the worst in computing history for adware, spyware, viruses, trojans, and especially bots! I wonder how many people who own a Vista OS have bots or the other things mentioned, which have a negative effect on the operation of an OS? Since Vista is relatively new, it becomes the most convenient thing to blame the problems on.

I think that if the only people we heard from were people whose problems with their computers were caused by Vista, then you would see the typical complaint numbers that come with any new OS. But when you throw in every new Vista user whose PC is running slow because of other reasons, yet Vista gets blamed, the numbers get inflated. Vista is the convenient goat.

creamy I remember quite well all the cant and curse XP caused some years ago; I never wanted to upgrade.
Now I'm sitting here besides my new Vista-PC and don't get it online.
But it looks really nice and I'll learn to live with it, as I learned to love CDs, digital cameras and my new toaster.
"It takes a while for a great idea to go from imagination to actual use in the real world, but it happens a lot! Three fictional gadgets made real were in the news just this past week."
