Well, just found out one part of my problem. Kept showing a G: drive as a CD drive. Been poking around with it, found it was connected to something called Tune Clone. That created a Virtual CD-RW SCSI CD Rom. Got rid of that program and uninstalled that drive. But.. now I still cannot get my machine to recognize the drive letters for my card reader.. just shows in remove hardware as Mass Storage Device and under system with yellow question marks. SOOOOOO frustrating!

That's what happened to me.. USB hub not showing in "my computer" or "windows explorer" and yet it does show in system with big yellow question marks. So I can't use my USB card reader. Also I now have a G drive that shows as a CD drive, and I really only have a D: and E: CD drive. Does that mean my G: drive is what your referring to as a virtual drive?? I can't find returnil listed in my task manager or start menu, but (perhaps) I might have installed it when offered and later deleted it. Can't remember.

Though this is late and I apologize for not having seen this in the past, I have a reply for those who may experience an issue similar to June M..

RVS has a safety option that should only be deactivated by an experienced user who is not concerned about potential uninstall issues (using RVS inside a VM (VMWare, VPC, etc)). This option is located in the Preferences > System Protection tab:

"Disable System Protection while in Windows Safe-mode"

This ensures that should your preference file become damaged or corrupt for any reason, the protection will be OFF when you enter Safe-Mode regardless of your current protection settings. Further, this allows you to uninstall the software so you can enter Windows normally and then reinstall a new copy of the software to correct the issue.

For those that may have experienced this, please let us know (http://www.returnilvirtualsystem.com/support/tech) which GOATD promotion you participated in (the date and link would be helpful) and the circumstances surrounding the loss of the software. We will review the submissions and do our best to help get you set up with the latest version release.

Note: Do NOT try to modify Returnil Virtual Partition properties if the partition is mounted -- UNMOUNT IT FIRST!

I found out the hard way... I got the recent 2.0.0.5007 version of Returnil a month or so ago when it was offered here on gaotd, meant to install the Virtual Partition in a partition OTHER THAN my system partition (ie, I should have installed it somewhere like my D:\Data partition), but didn't do that in my initial installation, so I went back sometime later to change that. The recommended way to change VP properties in versions older than their new 2.0.1 version is to go to the StartMenu\Programs\Returnil\Uninstall link, and choose the "Repair" option there. However, you should make sure the Virtual Partition is NOT mounted when you attempt to change it's properties (location, drive letter assignment, etc.). If it is mounted when you try to do it, it will be unable to change those properties, and will give you two options: to skip the step you were considering and proceed with the rest of the "repair" procedure ("Not recommended", advises the program text there), or to "Cancel/Abort" what you were trying to do. If you choose Cancel or Abort (I don't remember the exact terminology they used), it is very likely that the program will actually UN-install Returnil!!

As a very helpful company rep explained to me after that happened to me, this is a built-in protective safeguard the program engages in so as not to damage your system due to your having a possibly damaged installation of Returnil, which could in turn threaten collateral damage to Windows. The uninstalling of the program would not be a big deal to people who have purchased it directly from the vendor, as they could re-install the program, but obviously for anyone who had gotten the program from gaotd, they would not be able to reinstall the program, and would be totally out of luck (tho you could go to the vendor site and download the free Personal version -- but not the Premium version).

So... be aware of that. Don't attempt to modify the Virtual Partition properties if the Virtual Partition is mounted!

By the way, there's a major new version of the program that came out recently with some new features in both the free version as well as the paid version. Check out the vendor web site for info on that...

        Robert...

It took me almost a year to get all of Returnil off my computer. I cleaned the Registry, temp files, program files, did a search, and RETURNIL still showed up every time I restarted my computer. I still am not sure where it hid some of its files but it was frustrating trying to get ALL of it off my computer. (GAOTD offered this program last yeat.) It would be nice to have advice like: Newbies beware! or Experienced users only.

I am not a newbie, but I am not a computer technician either. Probably more of a "middle" type user. I am extremely careful of downloading any type of cleaning program as I have crashed my computer before because I used a "junk" remover. I would not recommend "RETURNIL" to anyone who is not completely computer savy.

Photoshop CS problem with returnil.
Photoshop CS (legitimate copy) shuts down after start and asks for a new install. Returnil seems to be incompatible with photoshop's copy protection mechanism. When returnil is turned off, Photoshop works fine. Does anybody has a solution for this problem? Thanks.

Hi hotdoge3,
Thank you for trying Returnil and we look forward to your feedback.

The System Protection/Session Lock is not effected by termination of the GUI (Returnil.exe). The GUI is simply a 32 bit program that allows the user to access the functions and features and does not control these features.

Hi emperor,
Thank you for the warm greeting. The issue you describe is not part of the RVS installation. RVS does not need to connect to the internet for any reason so does not have a server.

It is good to see you involved again, Coldmoon. Unfortunately I cannot make any useful contibution by way of suggestions for improvement of the software as I was unable to install RVS.
During installation of the program I repeatedly got an error saying that server1 could not be installed. This meant that I could not install this version and I also lost the previous version of RVS that you offered here.
So maybe I do have a suggestion, and it is for software developers generally (but it may be outside the scope of the installation routine, it may be a system or Windows issue) - when an error is encountered try to give an indication of the cause and possible remedies.
I did try a search on Google for the error but even with a simple search it returned no results. So hard luck me, but thanks for offering the software through GOTD.

Hi everyone,
We thank you for the great comments and questions regarding RVS. It is always fun when we get a chance to do things like this and we are very appreciative of the fact that a large percentage of you liked the program.

The most interesting for us however were the negative comments and votes during the give away. We realize there is no such thing as the perfect program but our goal is to get as close to that goal as humanly possible. To this end we would like to hear more feedback from those who had a negative opinion of Returnil.

Please feel free to write us or use the site support contact form to let us know how you think we could be doing a better job and what changes you would like to see in the software.

Again, thank you to everyone who participated in the give away and we look forward to your feedback.

With kind regards

Q: "...I did not mount the drive, nor did I turn protection on, but somehow thought that the space allocation would be dynamic rather than static."

ANS: The Virtual Partition is created with a set size and should not be confused with the cache. The VP is a convenience and is similar to other types of virtual storage volumes. The cache on the other hand is part of the System Protection.

When using the disk cache you have a trade off: ability to commit changes to disk, but static space to ensure the highest reliability for saving data. The memory cache does not allow changes, but has a dynamic cache. The memory cache is capable of allowing change commits but there is an unacceptable risk for damage when saving very large files or a large number of concurrent files.

We looked at this during the early testing and also thought about the inherent risk when there is a possibility to commit changes to the real system. For these reasons we decided on a dichotomy to allow flexibility when it is required and tighter control when it is not.

Q: "OK, now I am thoroughly confused! I thought that System Protection was accomplished by placing all entries into the Virtual Partition????"

ANS: I hope the explanation above has helped to clarify this a bit better.

Q: "Can I create a Virtual Drive on a removable USB drive or flash drive and move it from computer to computer (each with Returnil installed?) Of course, I would have to save the file changes if I wanted to keep them and the removable drive letter would probably need to be the same on all PCs."

ANS: This is not available in 2.0. For now, the VP is created on the System Partition in the RVS root folder. After it is created though, you can move it to a USB with enough space. Further you can move the file to another computer but you will need RVS on the other system to mount the file.

In the next series, you will be able to create your VP on alternate partitions or disks during installation and using the repair feature in the uninstaller.

Hi Coldmoon,

First I want to thank ReturnilVirtualSystem for this priceless software.

But,and I don't wanna sound ungrateful, could you implement a feature in future versions that allows the automatic removal of the RVSYSTEM.img file?(without having to dig in hidden folders)
Some users may eventually have lost 4 gig, when they change their mind about having a virtual partition.

Thanks for the hint concerning third party Virtual partitions.

Kind regards,

Hi RichU,
The System Protection and the Virtual Partition features are completely separate. Robert's instructions are accurate but I would add the following:

2A) Back up or move any content in the Virtual Partition that you want to keep
2B) Open the RVS GUI and then dismount the Virtual Partition if it is mounted
2C) Navigate to and then open the hidden folder C:\Returnil (this folder is hidden so you will need to turn on the option to see hidden files and folders in Explorer)
2D) Delete or move the RVSYSTEM.img file. Deleting it will have no effect on the functioning of RVS and the VP file itself it transportable provided you have sufficient media or storage space to do so

Then continue with Robert's instructions. Further, RVS is capable of using third party Virtual Partitions in lieu of its own. To do this, copy the non RVS Virtual file into the C:\Returnil folder and rename it RVSYSTEM.img. RVS will then recognize it as a Virtual Partition and will load it as if it were its own file...

You will be able to reconfigure the program.
(Thus disabling/enabling the virtual drive)
4.Restart the computer

If this didn't help please let me know.

Kyon 91

When Returnal is "ON" you can only save data to your virtual drive(when created) or to another partition(or drive).
You can also use the Returnil System Folder Relocation Tool.

seems like my problem is slightly different from yours, RichU.
Now whenever I put anything on my desktop, it goes straight to D:\My Documents\, and if I set download location in any download manager to desktop, it will ask for save location, as if my desktop doesn't exist! sshhh I did use the "restore to default" in the program but no luck. Can anyone help me!!

I installed Returnil yesterday, and added a virtual drive located at c:returnil during the installation. Since I will only use this program once in a while, I do not wish to always allocate the 3 Gigs which is taken up by this folder. I have looked through the preferences, but cannot see how to un-allocate this space and only assign it when it is actually needed.
Can anyone tell me how to remove the C:\RETURNIL virtual drive?

Thanks, Rich
