Of course there are "images" and there are "images".

Depends if the file system image is converted into a single compressed file - to assist with backup, or if no image file is created - but just a direct copy to another drive that could be used without any further processing.

I haven't used the newer versions of Ghost for example - but the terminology they used was to create an image (file), or copy a drive (onto another hard drive).

you are welcome, Toby.

actually, in my computer vocabulary, i thought, Image stands for "identical copy".

I am curious, since you said "but it will also"...
what did you think, that "image" means?

I tried DriveImage XML, and not only will it make an 'image' of your hard drive, but it will also make an identical COPY of your HD to another HD - which is what I was trying to accomplish. It took about 6 hours for 100 GB. Very simple to use, and you can use the PC while all this is going on.

Thanks for the advice.

i dont recall the original post, but for an image of your harddrive, i use this freeware:

Name: DriveImage XML
Version: 1.0
Grösse: 1,5 MB
Homepage: http://www.runtime.org/dixml.htm
Lizenz: frei für private Nutzung
Screenshot: http://www.runtime.org/images/dixml_big.gif
Beschreibung:
Zitat:
DriveImage XML is an easy to use and reliable program for imaging and backing up partitions and logical drives.

The program allows you to:

Backup logical drives and partitions to image files
Browse these images, view and extract files
Restore these images to the same or a different drive
Copy directly from drive to drive
Image creation uses Microsoft's Volume Shadow Services (VSS), allowing you to create safe "hot images" even from drives currently in use.

Images are stored in XML files, allowing you to process them with 3rd party tools. Never again be stuck with a useless backup!

Restore images to drives without having to reboot.

DriveImage XML runs under Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Vista only. The program will backup, image and restore drives formatted with FAT 12, 16, 32 and NTFS.
The program will backup, image and restore drives formatted with FAT 12, 16, 32 and NTFS.

I recall but can't remember a useful post about creating a back-up hard drive for a notebook PC. Essentially involved making an EXACT replica of ones primary hard drive on an external USB 2.5" hard drive. Then if the primary hard drive fails, all one needs to do is install the external hard drive in the laptop, and your back to square one.

Can any one recall this original post or suggest free software that can accomplish this?

Thanks.......Toby
