Like many (most?) programs these days, Fix-It will install itself to start (at least its Task Manager) automatically with Windows, and display its tray icon in your system tray all the time. Both "features" can, however, easily be disabled, making it something you can start when you need it, and exit from when you're finished. You can make it run as a tray icon only when you're doing something with it by going to Settings (from the Home page), choosing the Global Settings tab, and clicking on the "Only show tray icon when a task is running" radio button. You can disable its task manager from auto starting with your favorite start up manager program (AnVir Task Manager, Autoruns, etc.). Be aware that if you disable the task manager from auto starting, you can't have Fix-It automatically take Recovery Commander checkpoints; you'll have to remember to do them manually. One more thing. If you use Recovery Commander checkpoints (think of Recovery Commander as Windows System restore on steroids), you should probably disable System Restore; its restore points would be redundant, and merely use up your hard disk space. Or you could leave System Restore operational for added security. I've not had System Restore on since I installed Fix-It.

About this program.. just tell me ONE thing first. If I install it, is it going to run in the background or stick something on my task bar? Or is it something I can start and exit from when I want? I prefer my fix it programs to run when I want them to, which is one of the reasons I uninstalled AVG (which also conflicted with something else I had running.

davee........oops i stand corrected, you are right its confusing due to the recovery commander pop up, it reminded me of Total Uninstall which i have and used to uninstall, whereas Fix it Utilities i have not needed to even use the file undelete, thanks for that!

Thanks for alerting everyone to this freebie. I've used Fix-It Utilities for several years and it is an excellent suite of apps. I think, if I understand your last post correctly, that you misunderstand what Recovery Commander does. It doesn't record your installation and then let you automatically uninstall it (like, for instance, Total Uninstall or Ashampoo Uninstaller do). It is a more thorough and powerful replacement for the Windows System Restore program. It's confusing, because Recovery Commander pops up when you install a new program. While it will help restore your system files if the program crashes your computer, it won't completely uninstall the program.

Whiterabbit-uk.........since i last mentioned this program, i find its in full use whether i want to use it or not, that is the restore commander comes into itself and records any program i am about to install for the future in case i wish to uninstall, therefore it will remove all of the recorded file...a good thing as they say!

I agree, it's a nice program, though because I use EAZ FIX (a previous giveaway that 'm now going to buy), which turned off Windows restore I'm not able to utilize some of the tools that you get with the program.
