Just talked to a friend in La Costa the other night, and the flower fields are still there below Carlsbad. But, he said they now charge $8.50 to tour it, and behind it is Lego World! As for 76 being a lovely drive, that's the way we went to Price Club in 15 min., which became 1-1/2 hrs. They never widened it to cover the extra traffic. We used to feed ducks in the lagoon by Mayco, wonder if that's still there? I used to wonder who in the world would ever want to live in Poway or Rancho Bernardo.. there was no place to shop, just houses! Look at it now! I think the bait shop washed away in the high tides from that tsunami/quake in Alaska that year. There we all stood at the beach watching humongous waves coming in, never giving a thought that we might get washed away! DUH! Another place I heard has really grown is Temecula.. used to pass there on the way to San Bernardino, and if you blinked you missed it. Now all that heavy traffic in Escondio are commuters going to work from Temecula. Last time we went there, in '96, at that time we said it hadn't changed a bit, but there was just a lot more of it! I would secure him in his stroller and secure it to the pier so he could fish. The boy could hardly walk and was catching fish big enough to pull him in. He is still an avid fisherman 40 years later. Do you remember the strawberry fields above Oceanside, and how lovely the drive down Hwy 76W used to be? </p> <p>Beneath the pier was a ice cream shoppe, and those are the folks that moved in across the highway. The bait shack and eatery at the end of the pier were washed away by high tides a long, long time ago. When the pier was rebuilt, they put in a fancy-schmancy restaurant. </p> <p>Remember tiny Murietta? Also remember going to the beach to watch the high waves when the quake hit Alaska, and they were predicting tidal waves all the way down to SD. We used to go to the pier to fish when the croaker were spawning, boy I miss fresh caught fish! My favorite is sea bass.<br /> And you're right Bobby, when we lived in Mission Beach back in the late 50's - early 60's, it was all young couples with kids. Mostly military - Navy. Last time we went through there it seemed to be all bars, and tattoo parlors. When we first moved to Vista it was all orange/avocado groves. The orange blossom fragrance at night was wonderful. Then they took all those down and our view became red tile roofs!<br /> When they put in a development, they put in at least 500 homes. So much for the peaceful life. From our front window we had a great view of Sleeping Indian Mountain to the north, as well as snow capped Big Bear when it was clear. At that time, everyone thought, wow, what a view! Now, here in the mountains, we really have some views!! I wouldn't go back if you paid me. For that matter, I don't think we could afford to go back. Homes that were $165th are now $500th plus! Spring Valley has an 8-lane highway through it and is no longer rural; Mission Beach (all the beaches) are unsafe because of gang activity. Even little, hidden-away Warner Springs is no longer little or hidden; ditto tiny Emerald Lake .. it's private, and lined with 4-story homes. Last time I tried fishing at Santee, the people were three deep (casting over the top of each other) all the way around every lake. There were fights ..literally! .. to get close to the water. I shovelled a 100 foot path throught about 8 foot high snow, just to realize afterward that they weren't going to clear the road I was on for days.</p> <p>I worked at ITT in Asheville, making anti-lock brake systems for cars (assembly-line work) That's where I met my wife/girlfriend/better half/life partner/person I would die without. It was funny during the blizzard, because ITT had contracts with companies like Chevy and Ford, and they were fined thousands of dollars per MINUTE for any down-time at the auto plants that was due to ITT not getting brake systems to them in time. They didn't care what the weather was like. So here was this 8 feet of snow surrounding ITT, and people were trapped inside making brake systems, and there were helicopters landing and taking off from the roof with brakes for the auto companies. Luckily for me, the blizzard hit while I was at home, so I got several days off. However, we had no electric, no water (water pumps out), couldn't shower...couldn't flush...couldn't do much of anything. That was when I decided that the mountains of NC were not for me. I stuck around because Ellen's family is there, but I finally reached my limit and we left. I will NEVER live there again, unless the poles shift and the weather changes. The bad thing is, we have a 10x15 storage unit jammed to the max (no furniture either) in Hendersonville. One day I will manage to drag myself back there for all my stuff. It gives you several options, you can start a puzzle and save it to finish later, you can have it separate out the edge pieces, do timed puzzle and so forth. The program is very user friendly. You can create shelves to put your puzzles. You can even choose the shape of your puzzle pieces! She kept insisting that her boyfriend wrote it just for her. Finally, I asked her, "When did he write it?" She gave me some date in 1997. I sent her to a huge poetry web site that always time-stamped all the submissions, and there was "Your Teddy Bear", with a time stamp from 1995. I never heard from her again.
