Scuba, I found a new tool for your shop. SawStop, the worlds safest table saw! . Each saw is equipped with a safety system that detects when someone accidentally contacts the spinning saw blade, and then stops the blade in milliseconds. Amazing!

Wow Scubaguy, that's a very impressive workshop. The stuff that dreams are made of for any DIY or Hobbyist. I have the tools, but not the space or the inclination, lol. Maybe if I paid you to sort my tools out. :)

As for your first foray into underwater photography. Brilliant. Thanks for sharing

Regards

Had this in the wrong forum!
OH, here's something about tools since y'all are always talking about tools.. just got this in an email:

More Common Tools Explained
To the unitiated, the workshop can be an intimidating place, full of tools you may not know what to do with. To help, here's a helpful explanation of more common tools and their uses.

E-Z OUT BOLT AND STUD EXTRACTOR: A tool ten times harder than any known drill bit that snaps neatly off in bolt holes thereby ending any possible future use.

BAND SAW: A large stationary power saw primarily used by most shops to cut good aluminium sheet into smaller pieces that more easily fit into the trash can after you cut on the inside of the line instead of the outside edge.

TWO-TON ENGINE HOIST: A tool for testing the maximum tensile strength of everything you forgot to disconnect.

CRAFTSMAN 1/2 x 24-INCH SCREWDRIVER: A very large pry bar that inexplicably has an accurately machined screwdriver tip on the end opposite the handle.

PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER: Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids and for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads.

STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER: A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws into non-removable screws.

PRY BAR: A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50 cent part.

HOSE CUTTER: A tool used to make hoses too short.

HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.

MECHANIC'S KNIFE: Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic parts. Especially useful for slicing work clothes, but only while in use.

DARNIT TOOL: Any handy tool that you grab and throw across the garage while yelling "DARNIT" at the top of your lungs. It is also, most often, the next tool that you will need.

Funky, loved those descriptions! Especially the wire wheel (auuugh! incoming!), the skill saw (yep..no matter how many times I cut 'em, they'e still too short!) and the vice grips (transferring intense welding heat directly to the palm of my hand while protecting the weld joint at all costs).

Apparently the guys that engineered this expanding table had no such fun .. ahhhh...difficulties.
Ditto this walking table . Too cool.

Oh .. the links take you to my Photobucket site .. they're in the 'Tool Stuff' album.

i think that this thread is the appropriate place for this:

Common Tools Explained

To the unitiated, the workshop can be an intimidating place, full of tools you may not know what to do with. To help, here's a helpful explanation of common tools and their uses.

DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, denting the freshly-painted vertical stabilizer which you had carefully set in the corner where nothing could get to it.

WIRE WHEEL: Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light . Also removes fingerprints and hard-earned cleco calluses from fingers in about the time it takes you to say, "Oh rats!"

ELECTRIC HAND DRILL: Normally used for spinning pop rivets in their holes until you die of old age.

SKILL SAW: A portable cutting tool used to make studs too short.

PLIERS: Used to round off bolt heads. Sometimes used in the creation of blood-blisters.

BELT SANDER: An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs.

HACKSAW: One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle. It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes.

AVIATION METAL SNIPS: See hacksaw.

VISE-GRIPS: Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand.

WELDING GLOVES: Heavy duty leather gloves used to prolong the conduction of intense welding heat to the palm of your hand.

OXYACETYLENE TORCH: Used almost entirely for lighting various flammable objects in your shop on fire. Also handy for igniting the grease inside the wheel hub you want the bearing race out of.

TABLE SAW: A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood projectiles for testing wall integrity.

HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK: Used for lowering an automobile to the ground after you have installed your new brake shoes, trapping the jack handle firmly under the bumper.

EIGHT-FOOT LONG YELLOW PINE 2X4: Used for levering an automobile upward off of a trapped hydraulic jack handle.

You are all right about dumping them down the drain.. and I will clear that one up.. I used that as a phrase, they went in the trash. So, not to worry, not in any water supply. Plus anything I do dump doesn't go into the public water system, we have a septic tank. I'd been hearing about the water supplies containing meds on the news myself lately. Sure am glad we're on a well, and on a hill near the top so there's nothing above us that could/would leach into our water supply. (I HOPE). And yes, I do keep certain ones, like pain pills. Never know when those are needed. I never could take a full pain pill anyway, used to take just a 1/2 with 2 tylenol, and that's always worked for me.

Scuba....love the video of the scuba kitty/puppy. Awesome! I can't believe a cat would do that. It must be a real trip being so close to sharks and other underwater creatures. I got to touch a dolphin once and it was fantastic just to do that.

Copmom......I never throw prescription meds away. If you think about it why should they "expire" anyway? What, do they get stale or something???

Maizey......mind if I ask what Pharm. company? Hubby worked for one of the biggest for 20+ years. It's had several names, I think the current one is Aventis, but that could have cahnged by now too.

copmom, as far as tossing your expired drugs, I would use the guidelines talked about in the original link above. I won't throw away pain meds because they are a decade old. If they are weak, just take another one. But antibiotics and drugs that are used to control a condition, like heart, thyroid, blood pressure, etc., I'd be skeptical about keeping more that a couple of years. Also, liquid meds don't keep well. I get rid of them when they're expired.

Bobby is right about them getting into the water supply. This has had a lot of news coverage in he last few months.

Copmom .. don't dump them down the drain! Medications are not tested for or treated by most wastewater recycling plants. They could end up in your neighborhood's drinking water! 'Tis a better idea to crush them, and then mix them with kitty litter or coffee grounds (or something equally unpalatable) and then add to the trash.

I don't really know where I should post this. But since most of the folks that visit this thread are on medications, this is where I'm putting it. I knew about this years ago because my ex brother-in-law is a biochemist and used to work for a major pharmaceutical company.

The whale shark is a great fish! I've seen them on television before. When I do watch TV it's usually nature, cultural, history or how-to programs. Impressive video but I bet it does not compare to being there.

It's funny that cat would even let him put that suit on, let alone enjoy it! Neat! :)

Hi Bobby, I don't know how you missed it! Both my grandfather and father were machinists. My dad then got his engineering degree, while still working, and went on to become a mechanical engineer. I took machine shop training classes, and was immediately hired as a supervisor for the secondary machine shop at the company who provided the training. I only did that for a few years then moved to a powdered metals component manufacturing plant to work in the quality field. My mother's brother was a machinist too. I have many of my uncles tools and my dad gave me some of his. Dad still has most of his tools, including his old wooden tool chest full, but he has given several to both my brothers too. One brother is a secondary machinist/programmer and the other is a maintenance mechanic for secondary machining department. My sister is the only one who never got into machining, but she does work in quality for the same PM company where I started in quality. I suppose my siblings and I were born into this tool thing!
