GotFreeFax.com is another website that allows user to send free fax online to the US and Canada. User can either upload a PDF/Word file or enter text to fax. Plus, it does not add Ads to user's fax, which makes it more suitable for faxing formal documents.

maizeydaze is spot on. I have Winfax set up as a printer option so, in MS Word I simply print my document by selecting 'Fax" as the printer of choice and then when Fax Console activates just fax as normal. It will handle all types of docs and even scanned items. Hope this helps.

I'm really enjoying how most people have ignored your preference to avoid dialup...

Send faxes without a modem with Kinkos Printer device. The software is free. It will send your document over the interweb to them.

K7 is good for incoming faxes if you don't mind LOTS of random voicemail and junk faxes.. cuz numbers in their pool are recycled. Numbers unused for more than 30 days are put back in the pool

"Cox will only let you send six meg at a time in emails"

That's a reasonable- and common policy. hint: email is not for sending large files. That's what the File Transfer Protocol is for :P

websearch: free file hosting

(I like sendspace.com and detest rapidshare.com)

RAR or ZIP your file, upload to any of of the free file hosting services, then email the URL of your file to your recipient. Alternatively your horribly unamerican ISP (cox) might offer a ridiculously small FREE web hosting package that you can use the same way.

You cannot sanely expect someone else to pay for everything.

I have an account with 101FAX since November. I'm so pleased with the service most especially their user-friendly interface. There's also international faxing, fax broadcasting and email to fax services that I pay for a monthly rate of $4.50. It's a steal!

oy, I gotta look up my old fax-modem cd's with the manuals. the computer's fax-modem has to be on that phone line, but internet can be ignored.

I think it needs dialup networking for the interface to the modem as well as initialization, but nothing more.

Here's my report on the k7 free fax receiving service--I set up a blind fowarding from my telephone number to the number in seattle washington that was assigned to me by k7 after a very fast and straightforward registration on their site.

IT WORKS!!

So now when someone sends me a fax, they dial my local phone number, which is a dedicated fax line. The fax line rings and then forwards to my k7 number, which "receives" the fax. I have directed k7 to both send me an email and make faxes available through their site. This is great because I can save on ink and paper for junk fax blasts, AND my fax receiving is portable and I am not stuck at one location, which is helpful when traveling away from my office fax machine. AND because it is free, k7 saves me several hundred dollars a year over using the pay per month services.

Two drawbacks: First, you must use the k7 service at least once every 30 days or the account will expire. However, if you're faxing into a forwarded number, that is not as big of a disaster as if you had printed their seattle number on your business cards. If your account is inactive, just sign up for another one. Second, unless you have VOIP or cable phone service or a no-long distance package (unlikely with a commercial land line), you will pay long distance telephone charges from your fax receiving phone number to the area code in seattle that you are forwarding to into k7's system. For me, from NY state to Washington state, this would not be financially good deal to pay the toll charges to washington, but I have VOIP on this line so the forwarding is free.

The quality of the received fax is a bit fuzzy, but overall, this is a great FREE program that gives the user 100% portability on their own (forwarded) fax number.

Thank you to Ender for this suggestion!

My next question: How do I figure out the fax modem/pc/printer/budgie software combo for a computer that doesn't have internet access and doesn't need k7's forwarding and mobility? I'm really new at this and the fax modem part has me stumped.

I even have half a dozen or so fax/modems around.

andLinux looks interesting, too- http://www.andlinux.org/index.php

andLinux is a complete Ubuntu Linux system running seamlessly in Windows 2000 based systems (2000, XP, 2003, Vista; 32-bit versions only). This project was started for Dynamism for the GP2X community, but its userbase far exceeds its original design. andLinux is free and will remain so, but donations are greatly needed.

andLinux uses coLinux as its core which is confusing for many people. coLinux is a port of the Linux kernel to Windows. Although this technology is a bit like running Linux in a virtual machine, coLinux differs itself by being more of a merger of Windows and the Linux kernel and not an emulated PC, making it more efficient. Xming is used as X server and PulseAudio as sound server.

andLinux is not just for development and runs almost all Linux applications without modification.

Thank you to Ender for the link to k7.net in the US. I will re-post my results after I have the time to set up a test account, but it looks like you get a local seattle washington area code and you can blind forward any number to it. Might be the free answer to my dreams! Thanks!

xboxgame, i havent tested these, since i dont need them, as i am from germany, and we have a free webmail service, that gives you along with your webmail, a number to send and receive faxes (though not free, but i hardly need them, so i dont mind) .

for US, if you are american, maybe these are for you:
K7: http://k7.net/

FaxZERO lets you send out a fax for free online, but what if a client wants to fax something to you? Enlist the help of K7, a service that assigns users a phone number that accepts fax and voicemail messages, which are then sent to your email.

free faxing from the internet

I have MS Office XP 2003 and I can send a fax directly through Word via the Fax Console.

In Word open the document that you want to fax, click File, select Fax recipient. Follow the wizard and when you get to the screen asking "Which of the following is your fax program?" select FAX from the drop-down menu. Then follow the wizard the rest of the way through. It will then take you to the Fax Console wizard to send it.

If you want to send scanned items, insert the scans into Word. In Word, click Insert, Picture, From Scanner or Camera, then make your selections and scan the document. It will automatically be inserted into Word.

Yes, maizeydaze, you took the words out of my fingers.

However, fax speed is 14,400kbs-1, which is the speed of a d.a.c.s. line and a minimum guarantee offered by B.T. in the UK.

So why not just email, saves a lot of grief.

I am also looking for free fax software, but I haven't had any success in downloads.com, softpedia or google searches. You can find free software to send (see the comment on MS fax console) or use the free fax send feature in vonage if you have a VOIP account without a separate fax line (we do), but the problem is that I want MY OWN phone number and a web-based or PC based receiving capability, and that costs a monthly fee. Keep looking, and I will too, and hopefully we will hear from freewarefan and others on this search!
