Things just keep getting better. (or funnier, depending on your POV)

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080227/tc_nm/microsoft_server_dc_1

"Microsoft enters virtualization...released the latest version of its Windows operating system for powerful servers on Wednesday, thrusting itself into the red-hot market for virtualization technology that allows one computer to act like many machines."

Is this a tacit admission by MSFT that since it can't ensure software compatibility on any one PC, it's going to try to emulate all of them in the hopes something will run a program without a BSOD?
Or, does the virtualization aspect mean that even people who don't have Vista can now experience the same sense of pain, isolation and frustration as Vista users?

Lee, it was a Win98 demo, it was beautiful, and rumor has it that after the show was over, Gates personally shot 3 employees. As the Mastercard ad says...
Windows cost when bundled with PC = $149.99
Windows avg lifetime tech support cost (incl at least one complete HD reformat) = $935.16*
Windows going BSOD behind Gates' fat head during highly touted global demo = PRICELESS

*not incl. bankruptcies after system-wide network failures and security penetrations

Great news for consumers! Cardboard box now worth more than the "Vista Inside"
http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/080229/microsoft_vista_price_cut.html

Brad Brooks, a corporate vice president for Windows marketing at Microsoft, said in an interview that the company has since tested lower prices and found "product was moving much, much faster."

Off camera, Mr. Brooks claimed that the closer the price point gets to zero, "the faster these babies fly out the door." He stated that corporate philosophy is shifting so as to treat Vista more like the old AOL mass CD mailings, and confidently predicts that when MSFT actually starts PAYING people to use Vista, the installed base of barely functional systems may eventually exceed that of RedHat. hee hee hee hee

I saw that broadcast, I think that happened on windows 98.

He was just explaining how this ops is the the best, most secure and least likely to give you a BSOD.

Then boom it appeared behind him.

Kate was a fine actress (as was Tracy) and Desk Set was a very good flick. FYI, Netflix has it as one of their many InstantWatch films.

Looking back, though, I'm more amused by the sci fi films that tried to meld great walls of blinking lights, tubes, dials and AI to produce an erudite voice Bush can only dream of having. When it comes to BSOD's, though, NOTHING beats this infamous Windows98 demo staring Billie Behemoth himself. http://www.menphis75.com/images/foto_txt_mistery/bill%20gates.jpg

Kudos to you if you're only bothered by what'll transpire after you're gone. I've run into way too many who spend all their time being bothered by the "highlights", wrinkles and gravity... or angry at the guys who (when the arthritis allows it) can still quickly turn their heads to drool at a younger model. :D

If you still have pepper in your beard then your not that old!

My hair is blondish, so I consider the gray as a cheap highlight! Didn't have to pay for it. I belive when I got that twinkle, computers still looked like something out of "Desk Set"! EMERAC! Since that Movie is circa 1957, I would have been around 4!

I just look back at all the things that have happened since I was born. The only thing that bothers me, is the things I won't be seeing(or maybe I will) when I'm gone!

The wizard screenshot? Nah, my nose is smaller and my beard's still salt & peppery.
T-shirt will come in black (great contrast to both the neon blue screen and embarrassed and struggling smiley's blushing yellow face)
As for the teen slang site, I was cursing BSOD's when most teens were still but a twinkle in their parents' eyes. (that's sad in so many ways, come to think of it)
However, if we get many more locketts and xboxgamers on these forums, Graylox will likely have to bookmark that site, too!

Thanks for the link! Love the screen shot! Any resemblance?
My problem with the printer error, was I would have to reboot, the first thing that would come up is send error report, which after awhile became don't send. If I choose send, would say details and ship me off to M$. There was no code, just a stupid explanation. I will take advantage of the link and download for other stupid screw-ups!

Will there be a choice of color for the T-shirt?!!!

At first I didn't pick-up on the acronym for BSOD.

Gates is planning a last ditch Vista marketing campaign by offering a free Vista t-shirt in exchange for registering your installed download.

I just got the news in my Inbox yesterday from ZDNet Tech News.
They made it sound like "just in"!

Maybe they are not on the same page, lol!

Haven't been keeping up with the latest, just found out per one of Runesagemagi's links there is going to be a Windows 7. The same post also informed me why I got rid of my HP printer(that I didn't have to) because I had IE 7 on at the time and my PC kept blue screening. Send error report, something with my printer drivers. Went to HP, they said I had the most up-to-date drivers. The comment stated it had to do with IE 7 and not the printer itself! Well at least my mom is getting some use out of it as a copier. Sticking with IE 6 and Firefox.
Thanks !

The "Release Candidate" is exactly that - a candidate for release. If there are no further issues with RC2 (for example) RC2 will be the code that everyone will get as XP SP3. (Of course knowing Microsoft - RC2 will also go final if there are an "acceptably low" number of issues (ie. Acceptable to Microsoft) - depending on schedule timeframes, available resources and other commitments.

Ever since WinNT4 SP4 (if my memory serves) I have made it a personal policy to not use a patch or service pack that is still undergoing testing by Microsoft (on a machine I'd rather not have to format and reinstall in the event of issues). In fact give it a week or two after release before committing to it (just in case).

Installing a patch that is still being tested on a production pc, can be a risk if it is only to have a look and run the latest. Would you fly in a plane with a test pilot while they take it up to "iron out a few problems"?

To be clear on what XP SP3 RC2 is:

It is the second "release candidate", that is, a state after alpha and beta, and, depending on how real the release potential is, represents either a would-be release that is only backed off if there are problems, or a "tuning step" on the road to release.

What it contains, primarily, is a roll-up of all previously issued updates, plus some that were not on general release (it appears that KB888111 HD Audio 1.0a may be an SP3 update), along with a few extra tweaks.

It will be most useful for slipstreamed re-installs, as for a machine that has been receiving regular updates, the additional coverage is only those items
not already provided.

Several factors suggest that SP3 RC2 may be a potential release, the release notes and flagging update via WindowsUpdate suggests they are getting ready to move, possibly with an opt-in followed by an opt-out update push.

Suki, no, I don't think I posted that bit of prognostication, but I've been thinking that ever since I saw how much effort Billie Behemoth Corp. was putting into convincing the public that Vista was "the greatest thing since sliced bread"...
er, was the next official OS upgrade...
er, was already being used by some people who weren't reporting too many problems...
er, wasn't all that bad...
er, will eventually be the defacto standard whether people like it or not because we ain't gonna work on WinXP ever ever again.
hee hee hee

As for IE7, I resisted all entreaties to switch from IE6 until late last year when (like Lee) one of my banks made it impossible to even log on without it. My resistance was due to plain old orneriness and a loathing for change. While I will NEVER enable the new tabbed windows feature (I keep 10 to 20 separate browser windows open most of the time and like the old method just fine), switching to IE7 hasn't caused me any problems. I have no time or energy to learn all of Firefox' idiosyncracies, so only use it when absolutely necessary (like when playing around with geocities' sites... they seem to have abandoned support for IE) so in the time honored tradition of "better the devil you know than the one you don't", I stick with IE.

Lee, I read the article that Runesagemagi posted the link for.

They are estimating it to be around March 17th.

I have no trouble with my online banking with IE 6.

IE 7 put a bad taste in my mouth. Tried it from Beta, to RC1, to final. For some reason it messes with my passwords.
I am not a big fan of Internet Explore period! I use Firefox as my default and only use Explorer when forced to.

Suki, I.E.7 works great, I was one that prefered v6, till my bank would not allow me to use it for on-line banking, so I went to 7 after a week or so got stuck in and enjoyed the (old) tab browsing.

However, I have been trying out this rc2 release and it works fine on a test machine.

This has to be 1 or 2 steps away from the full XPSP2 Final.

Runesagemagi

Was it you that posted, when M$ comes out with SP 3 for XP, it will blow Vista out of the water?

I love reading the comment's on both the Game/Software page's.
This site to me is like someone reading a Newspaper in the morning, without the bad news!

Sorry if I offend anyone: but, when I here all the people touting their Vista Machine's, then complaining that this or that dosen't work, I just love it, lmao!
Same for those who chose to opt for IE 7! Another stinker from M$!

IMHO, I Will Not Downgrade to Vista, Nor will I allow IE 7 on my machine's!

Bigun, all of today's WinXP SP3 news that's fit to print:
http://tinyurl.com/2npecf

Most article lead-ins read like this:
"Microsoft on Tuesday continued its plodding march toward the long awaited release of Windows XP service pack 3 by opening the newest version of Windows XP SP3 to the public. It's not final, this last service pack, but it's close.
What exactly has Microsoft handed over? Dubbed Service Pack 3, v.3311 once it's installed, Microsoft says that this is SP3 RC2 (for Release Candidate 2). By all indications, it's the same build as the one seeded to the closed-set of 15,000 beta testers about two weeks ago, on Feb. 7."

This is tantamount to surrender. hee hee hee
Ding Dong, the Gates is dead.
Vista's ready for the Gong Show.

@Lee

Curious, I believe that the message that I got several weeks ago from Microsoft Tech Net on SP3 was that the Windows XP SP3 was final. I also got a message concerning a SP3 download for "Office XP".

I don't recall either download being a "pre-release" version. Do you have information that gives build info?

Thanks mev1296 and Lee for the update!

I bookmarked the pages.

I guess I was under the assumption that it was the finished release.

I took a shot in the dark when M$ released IE 7 Beta, then RC1 and onto the final. They still haven't got it fixed in my opinion!
The only thing that is stopping me at this point, is the warning to back up your data and remove any previous versions(which I don't have). The download size is not a problem for me.
Whabbit I agree, I had to many problems with IE 7. I still like Firefox better!

I will be watching, reading and waiting!

Thanks to all for your help!!!!!!!

I think I'll wait till the the full release is released. I think most of my comp's are up to date. Thanks for the info thoyg mev. I was going to download it, but after reading the pre amble over at microsoft, and the fact that I've had a lot of problems over the past few months that have resulted in a loss of a significant amount of data i'm not taking ny chances.

Best not to use pre-releases.

That SP3 is just all the releases since SP2.

I have tried it; It does give your system a slight boost.
