Awww, that's really nice of you, though I really don't think my reviews are that good. (this is in answer to sukibabe as I'm not going to be presumptuous with respect to funkymoms post, lol)

I’m just lucky (or unlucky enough if you're previously read why I have so much time) to have plenty of time on my hands and enjoy writing up these reviews. I only wish I had a better literary style to give my reviews some pizzazz or at least make them a little more interesting to read as I think they are rather bland and boring.

I've been checking out orbiter which although not as good as what I was hoping for is still quite an interesting educational game. Once you've downloaded the base pack (see below for downloads) there's several extra downloads that adds higher definition imagery to some of the planets and earth. It's quite a complex package with loads of menus that allow you to tweak the game to your preference. If you like simulators you'll like this one though it doesn't come up to the standard of games like Silent Hunter III or IV a WWII submarine simulator that has a hugh modding and fan base following (including me). This game is worth downloading just for the images of earth from space as well as the fly bys of some of the planets.

I’ve uploaded the screen captures I’ve taken so far, though I’ve still got a lot to do with this game before I post a full review.

All on one page:

http://s109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/FREEWARE/Orbiter/

As a slideshow:

http://s109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/Whiterabbit_01/gaotd/FREEWARE/Orbiter/?albumview=slideshow

Googled: (not all the images represent the game)

http://search.msn.co.uk/images/results.aspx?q=orbiter+space+flight+simulator&go=Search+Images&form=QBIR

Also here are some You Tube videos of the game:

Apollo 13:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTDxDG3k82k&feature=related

Delta V:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3F9NaXpUas

I also found more content to add to the orbiter packages such as new models and sound files and even a tutorial, which is a must have in my opinion; and which you can get by following the link below. The first link is for the base pack and all the official add-ons, the second is the other stuff I found:

suki- i'm with you. none of these games appealed to me personally, but i know that so many of us here have different game-tastes.

not that i could compete with "the masters" (who i won't name because i am guaranteed to forget someone, and besides it's pretty obvious), who we all know and love.

I agree with you RM, I have Myst Uru: Ages beyond Myst and Myst III: Exile. This is a beautiful game that was way ahead of it’s time, and well worth the money I spent on it. It's also still very playable, despite the realism of some of today’s newer games such as Crysis, COD 4 and Medal of Honor: Airborne (to name just a few), though they are not quite in the same genre as Myst.

I'm really impressed with the space flight simulator. If there's anything with planets and satellite imagery of earth and I'm into it. There's upgraded to higher definition imagery of all of the major planets and a separate upgrade for Earth.

Here's the site for Orbiter:

http://orbit.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/

and here's the intro to the site:

Quote:

"ORBITER is a free flight simulator that goes beyond the confines of Earth's atmosphere. Launch the Space Shuttle from Kennedy Space Center to deploy a satellite, rendezvous with the International Space Station or take the futuristic Delta-glider for a tour through the solar system - the choice is yours.
But make no mistake - ORBITER is not a space shooter. The emphasis is firmly on realism, and the learning curve can be steep. Be prepared to invest some time and effort to brush up on your orbital mechanics background. Good starting points are JPL's Basics of Space Flight, and R. Braeunig's Rocket & Space Technology.

For discussion with other Orbiter users, have a look at the Orbiter forum. More information and resources for users and developers can be found under the Orbiter Wikipedia entry and the OrbiterWiki site, both maintained by the Orbiter community"

I'll certainly devote some time to this and may report back with some screen captures when I have the time.

It's game time now :)

Damn! (I hope that's acceptable?) I wish I'd missed this link until later as just this minute I've taken delivery of five more games ‘old and relatively new’ that were on special offer so I couldn't resist. I only ordered them early morning yesterday - Armed Assault Queens Gambit {expansion pack to Armed Assault}, which is a little annoying as I bought the original Armed Assault after pre-ordering it and paying the release price of the equivalent of $60, now less than a year later you can get the original game and the expansion pack that I've just got for ~$35. The other games include one of my old favorites Hidden and Dangerous II, (I only had the demo) Red Ocean which had been reduced from over $60 to less than $10, and the Blitzkrieg anthology that includes the original Blitzgrieg and three expansion packs for $10 as well as last summers talk of the gaming fraternity, Medal of Honor: Airborne. But until I've checked out these games that funkymom has revealed I won’t touch them because once I get focused on something I can't stop, lol. These prices are brilliant when you look at the price of most of the arcade games that are offered over on the game giveaway site.

I still can’t understand why arcade games don’t reduce in price after a certain period when the initial rush to get the new release has died down. A lot of the arcade games I have that cost $19.95 or $19.99 three four years ago still cost the same, whereas every shop bought game that’s released on disc invariably comes down in price shortly after it’s release apart from some of the blockbusters such as COD4 and Bioshock that may take upwards of a year to reduce, but reduce they will. Medal of Honor cost the equivalent of over $65 when it was released last summer 2007, now it costs $36 less than six months after it's release.

I think the online software distributors are taking us for fools. Take Alawar for example. Okay they have been very generous throught the giveaway project (thanks for this project), but if you look at just one of their policies with respect to marketing their games they are real rip off merchants. For example, you can still buy Hyperbolloid the complete edition plus several expansion sets which will cost you quite a lot of money (I actually (and foolishly) bought all the expansions up to the Xmas 2006 expansion; I spent a total of over $170. They have now released Hyperballoid Golden pack that includes all their expansion packs plus an extra pack for $19.95, but they do not market it on their own site, only via other distributors. So their loyal fan are still buying individual expansion packs, not realizing that the golden version costs about $5 more than one single expansion pack or the same as a mega pack. The great thing is, if you have the complete game you can take the expansion pack DAT files from the demo of the golden pack and put them in the original game and have all the expansion packs for free.

To the moderators if you think the last part of the last paragraph is a little naughty please feel free to delete it.

Thank you for the link funkymom, these sorts of links are always welcome. It looks like there's several that I'll be downloading to try out.

I think I'll reinstall my copy of GTA. I bought the first GTA over 8 years ago. It came with a free mission pack called London 1969 that isn't included in the Abandon ware title. I'm wondering how many expansion packs were made and whether they to will become Abandon ware?

This game was a blockbuster when it was first released. You'll find hidden areas, secret missions and over 6 000km of freeways, backstreets, roads, alleyways and dead ends within three cities. You can also play via a network against a friend. There are loads of power ups such as machine guns, rocket launchers and flame throwers. You can take your pick from a wide variety of vehicles all with their own characteristics, for example the race cars do go a lot faster than the old bangers you can pinch. To get any car you can just take a stationary one, but if you want one that is on the road you need to stop it by blocking it. You can then walk up to it and the driver will get out and run away. You may have to intimidate them first though by letting off a few shots. All the vehicles take damage and eventually will give up on you. The transition from pristine to a wreck is easily seen as the car reflects the damage done to it.

The game isn't just about driving cars as you can walk the streets and interact with a city full of people (usually by beating them up or shooting them. Some of the missions will require you to leave you car and wipe out a rival gang on a roof top building somewhere in the city. You can even get on a train and drive it. Watch out that you don't crash it into another train though. Somewhere in the city is a hidden tank, which will make you almost invincible. There’s also a 60 minute music track with some excellent music included. It's a pity this doesn't come with the London 1969 pack as the music with that one rocks.

I've been meaning to download Runescape because a couple of my sons friends have been playing it for a while now so I thought it would be a great idea if he was to play it as well. I'd also say Grand Theft Auto is a great game as well. You'll find a link to the Abandon ware version of Grand Theft Auto II in my post on wheeled games:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/2574?replies=6

Check out the official site for GTA:

http://www.rockstargames.com/grandtheftauto/

Where you’ll find a list of all the GTA games. I’ve just discovered that there is a free add on pack for the London expansion pack that takes you back even further in time to 1961… cool

Unfortunately for those of you who don’t own GTA London 1969 this expansion is unusable.

Runescape seems like the best one they have. I've been playing it for over a year. It's a really neat game, I can cook, fish, sail on a boat, and in the paid version build my house. It has lots of quests too. I play the f2p version, there is so much to do in that version, when I get to a higher level I'll do the paid version which is only $5.00 a month not too shabby for $60 bucks a year.
