I skimmed a little so pardon if this is repeat information - but the unusual thing about WinRAR is that it will continue to work even after the trial period is over (for unzipping, anyway; I don't normally create .rar files). It'll ask you each time you open it to buy it, but by now it doesn't bother me at all...

just FYI.

and BuBBY, thanks for doing as we suggested yesterday.. putting your comments up right away on that password one!

In todays case I don't think it would matter, I think the opinion is almost unanimous - that this password generator really stinks. Even as a trial/shareware for potential customers - the program in the form it is in right now, would scare all their potential customers away, never to return.

Ok, the other program was WinAce! Per, lol, Windows File Association.

Also, can you change your password on here? I had to look for the one I was given.

The Ace program had a free trial, but if you took there little ad-on, was Free.
The Ad-On was like my dog lurking behind me. It was funny at first, then annoying!
When you opened a web page, then closed it, there it was making suggestions of other sites that might be of interest. That whole program was in the recycle bin after 48 hours!
Suki
Thanks Mom! Sorry I got bad grades in Copy and Paste too, lol.

Ok, you forced me, lol. I went one day to download a RAR file, my PC said to me, Stupid, we cannot open this file, go here Old stupid one. Took me to a windows page that said choose A or B. One choice, lets say was A-WinRAR, the other choice was another program, the B choice. Which at this time I cannot remember. Since I am working on my Laptop at the moment and not able to Login on my Desktop ( which does not have any RAR files on it) I will attempt to open one and force it to bring up that page !
Gee, I think I will join the "Over The Hill Gang".
BuB, your one tough cookie!
Suki
P.S. I might need the Password program.

I use 7-zip. It will create a few formats and read quite a few more. I've been using it for several years and it even works great under Vista. It will easily read a rar (the reason I got it in the first place) and it's "extract here" option is really nice!

Hello, funkymom! Wow, you're getting quite an education lately, aren't you? :-)

If my opinion means anything at all to you, then there's really only two ways to go. As you've already heard in this thread, there are many programs that will do what you want, and there are many opinions as to which is the best to use. It's kinna like cake... some people like white, some chocolate, some spice, and on and on.... But, in the end, it's all cake, and you just want something that tastes good, yes? :-)

So, you want to hear what kind of cake I like? Well, if it's free cake you're talking about, you can't go wrong with 7-zip. It's moist, light, and leaves you feeling satisfied when it's all said and done.

Now, if you're going to the Bakery Shop and paying for a cake, then WinRar is the one to get. Rich, creamy, and full of eye-candy. But, you know how bakers are, expensive.

Well, there you have it! But, we'd best stop talking about cake, or someone we both know will want one sent to her, with a file inside. Must have an iron deficiency! :-)

I used WinRAR for years. Swear by it (never at it).

Suki, you are probably thinking of WinZip (for most end users there is no real benefit of Winzip over one of the other free options - such as 7-zip - maybe with the exception of support).

I am on the Trial of WinRAR. I like it because you can stop it from opening a Zip file.
Don't know if I will make the purchase. 29.00 for one PC, 2-9, 21.00 each. I don't download alot of rar files. It beats the heck out of the other program, sorry don't remember the name and do not see it listed here, that windows recommended! It had an attached program if you wanted it for Free, that was pop up city! If I do decide that having a program like this is worth the cost, I like WinRAR!

If you just want to open a rar file - most programs that can do it all use the same library file provided by rarsoft.

Assuming the rest of the program is ok - opening a rar file should work the same in any program.

(Side note - rarsoft do a little deal with the licensing - anyone can use their code to un-rar a file - but only their own product WinRAR can actually create rar archives. This is why most archive type programs can un-rar ok - but won't go back the other direction)

http://www.altools.net/? Alzip?
Open almost every archive file imaginable with ALZip.

You can open and extract alz, ace, arc, arj, b64, bh, bhx, bin (hex files), bin (CD images), bz2, cab, ear, enc, gz, ha, ice, iso, jar, lcd, lha, lzh, mim, pak, rar, tar, tgz, uue, uu, war, xxe, z, zip, zoo, 7z, and 001files.

There are lots more file extensions that you can open as well. Just drag and drop files like WSZ or WAL WinAmp skin files into ALZip to open them.

CD image files can also be opened and individual files extracted.

hello my oh-so helpful forum buddies!

i have accumulated many .rar files that i have not tried to open until today(after seeing all the posts about last scenario-like i have time for this?!). of course, my programs cannot open this.

i've seen a few freeware zipper-type programs, but i wanted input from yooz guys.

see how much i trust you all?

tucows offers a few including zipgenius and 7-zip (i only look at programs with high popularity or user ratings).

any info or suggestions will be appreciated.
