Didn't see UrbanFonts posted. I like their site layout...
>>> plenty of FREE fonts,
>>> the runic font I tested d/l and installed fine,
and finally, a big plus -
>>> you get an immediate visual representation of any sample text you input, and can compare that text using up to 48 fonts at a time.
There's even a FUNKY category.  :-)

Thanks Graylox, I've tried out the first brush set and got lost playing with to see what it could do. I am liking it! I'll get some more of the brushes here, I haven't looked at the fonts as yet. Tomorrow!:) I have so many new toys, (fonts, filters, ebooks and apps) it will take me days and days to get them organized and working together. I did make progress with the plugins last week. They are always the hardest.
Thanks again...yet another goodie from you!

Greylox, I see what you mean about Manfred Klen!

You wrote: "a font-viewer which is able to display fonts in a zip-file without unpacking them first to folder."

That would be super, if nothing else than to give the font name, it would be very helpful when you have 700 zipped files. A lot of fonts are the same,just have different names... the internet version of the game "I've got a secret". :D

These are great lists everybody...lots to explore!

RunesageMagi,I seem to have greatly benefited from this thread. I have all these managers working in XP just fine. The Font Thing is very nice as is Font Picker and CFont Pro. I've decided if I can have multiple graphic editors and buku versions of match 3 and breakout games, I can also keep and use multiple font editors!(Ah, the games one plays with ones mind)*giggle* I have used one old screen capture app and one font manager since the dawn of time! No more! They each have some strong points that are well worth keeping.

I realized today with a bit of shock and horror, that I had gathered all my fonts on one small external drive in an attempt to corral them all and find a way to get them usable, I haven't backed up this drive...I could have lost the whole collection!!! I have bits and pieces backed up of course, but real gems could have been lost as I'm always finding a couple of new goodies here and there, fifteen new ones yesterday alone! Thank you Dc1337... you have added to my addiction. I snagged a few off your list.

I briefly checked out Typograf and the fact that it compares fonts across multiple drives would be worth the d/l. I think it would make an excellent GAOTD!

Has anyone found a free font editor? There are times I need to make small changes in a few characters of decorative text. I do them by hand but it is not as accurate as I would like. The only editor I've seen is a little pricey for me and filled with bells and whistles I don't want or need.

This isn't a font link, but I stumbled on it yesterday and had to give it a quick try...just a toy, but if you want a laugh, it's tiny and free.

Well, well, IDOL has launched what should prove to be a very popular thread. Thanks for the links, only a few of which I already had stored away on a dusty shelf next to the batwings and newt eyeballs. (yes, of course I had the runes!)

Perhaps someone will advise whether TheFontThing is compatible with WinXP Home? When I came across it a year or so ago and saw the "Current Version: 0.80 (beta 2) released 22 Dec 1999" and its support limited to Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT 4.0, I passed it by.

Would that GAOTD could convince Typograf to offer its $35 appl...

Until then, how about Font-Frenzy? It requires an email addie to remove the nag screen. -

Wow, these are all great links! I've d/l'ed the managers and will do some comparisons, it is such a relief to know there are other managers now, I was always worried about losing my X-Fonter or having it become unusable with new hardware/os.

Delenn13, from your list: http://www.moorstation.org/typoasis/typoasis1.htm beautiful site, terrific fonts!

Thanks for the link to the manager Bubby! I've d/l along with Dc1137's Font Thing and Delenn13's Font Picker. I'm hoping one of these help me manage my fonts better as I seem to be almost out of control. I want to easily be able to tell if I already have a font and also keep them in useful groups that I can easily install and uninstall.

http://www.myfonts.com/ has some free fonts in its catalog.

I've made an album with all the free fonts I can find, to make it easier for others. http://www.myfonts.com/FontAlbums/AlbumDetail?aid=293769
(Somehow I've got them listed more than once - the album says it has 880 fonts, but when you go to order them all, there's only 375.)

The Font Thing is a free font management program.
http://members.ozemail.com.au/~scef/tft.html

With The Font Thing you can:

    * Browse installed and uninstalled fonts
* Browse fonts in subfolders as a single combined list
* View sample text and individual characters in your choice of colours
* Change sample text "on the fly" or easily switch between your own standard text samples
* View detailed font information
* Print font samples
* Associate notes with fonts
* Install or uninstall any number of fonts at once
* Load (and unload) any number of fonts for temporary use
* Copy or delete any number of font files at once
* Rename font files to avoid file name conflicts
* Filter fonts according to their type
* Group fonts into collections for easier management
* Use multiple font windows simultaneously for easy font comparison and management.
