Thanks for the clarification, Esa. Sounds like a fine adjunct to basic computer security to protect newbies, casual surfers and anyone who doesn't use throwaway email addresses. It's not safe to roam the Net without a trusty sword these days. For the record, not even on the coldest nights would I trust a russian mafia's mail order bride site or the yakuza's cherry blossoms. This is what happens when the world's oldest profession unionizes. Support Right to Work legislation!

RunesageMagi, you asked about WOT. WOT, Web of Trust, gets it information from two sources: from the user community (members can easily give site ratings) and hundreds of trusted sources such as phishing site listings, spam black lists etc. All this is processed by the system that calculates a reputation for each site twice every hour.

WOT has four reputation components: overall trustworthiness, vendor reliability, privacy and child safety (adult content). You can easily customize your protection level in the settings. We don't want be your nanny, so you can easily tell the system to ignore child safety, and you won't miss any russian mail order bride sites. Take a closer look at http://www.mywot.com - WOT has information for almost 17 Million sites.

LeKanaw, do you happen to know if WOT just scans for malware or if it acts as a cybernanny censor? I'd hate to be blocked from those russian mail order bride sites on these cold snowy nights. Man cannot live by mangoes alone. :*D

Don't know if this is off topic, just wanted to add that I was using LinkScanner and McAfee Site Adviser. But as per MisterB. advice on a post last week, I switched to WOT.
I like the idea it's people powered and I find their Forums quite nice too.
http://www.mywot.com

Now I (still) use LinkScanner(which BTW was sold ~2 weeks ago to AVG) and WOT.
Let's hope LinkScanner doesn't "disappear" or becomes badware/cripleware or something similar...
Peace, M.

If you use AOL now CPW I am sure they give you this for nothing in the form of a suite with a firewall.

I used McAfee once when I purchased the windows 95 disk as it was on the disk even my retail disk.

I didn't like it, prefer my current firewall, though k8UndeadFox

xboxgamer I use to use McAffee and stopped months ago. It uses too much system resources. I'm using Avast Home (Free) with Comodo (Free) as the firewall and Threatfire (Free). I believe you will find them pretty good and won't use as much of your PC's resources. But since you've got McAffee installed (don't know what you were using before) give it a whirl and see if your pleased.

Purely my opinion. McAfee or Nortons for free? It is a nice gesture - but they aren't all that great, and a clean uninstall is easier said than done.

http://www.av-comparatives.org

IMO - best free AntiVirus = Avast Home Free
best paid AntiVirus = ESET NOD32
Comparisons

For the people trusting their computers to AVG, take another look at your options. You can do a lot better (for free)

Well all I can say is that I didn't get asked for my credit card number and registered free without any problems so NO this is not a rumour. Anyway, maybe it is only for the UK only, but I'm sure I'm not the only person from the UK that frequents this forum, and for all those that are p***** off about that - well all I can say is tuff. :P I found a similar problem when trying to get a registration number for the free O&O products but as soon as I entered a bogus US address (from Fake Name Generator) they sent me the registration numbers immediately. So If they don't do it by detecting your ip address try http://www.fakenamegenerator.com/gen-male-en-uk.php using your correct email address of course.

Unfortunately I can't use McAffee as it wont install due to a conflict with my present antivirus programs. I think it's the F-Secure one i use, which i have a subscription to for as long as my wife continues to lecture at the college she works for. They give all their staff a licence for F-Secure as well as other software such as windows and office. (not 2007 yet though) I would use as many AntiV softwares as I could as I'm sure they all have their own peculiarities. If it's free for a year, then I say "get it" unless you have the same problem as I have. The only MacAfee stuff I use is Site Advisor (freeware) at the moment, which does help to stop me going to some sites especially if there are green tagged sites available for the same stuff I'm looking for. 'Better Safe than Sorry', though sometimes 'nNothing ventured Nothing gained', lol.

Thank's so much for posting details though. I'll email the link to some of my friends as they may be interested. :)
