Ahh. I tried several yesterday, and they all become fuzzy in the mix.. I don't believe I even tried the other one you provided a link to... I just got sort of burned out, and went back to FinePrint.

BTW- There ain't nobody here to evict me from the bedroom. And, yes, I'm aware that my previous musing on ships captains might be a clue as to why that is. :-(

Hi, RM!

Oh, UUmerge wasn't too bad, but it just didn't do what I had hoped for, so I dumped it in favor of using FinePrint, even though it's the trial version..

In the meantime, I'm now exploring an interesting aspect of EverNote, called Merge Notes. It has distinct possibilities!

FwF... Just out of curiosity how did simpli-file-split-and-merge fare during your testing of all the above suggested progs? I ask because I wondered why they'd use the FONT directory in their screen shot but of course I didn't want to open the README file -

But, then you had to go and say the "reading directions" part..... Oh, what pain durst thou inflect. :-)

Thanks, I'll check into it further, and post back what I manage to find out.

FwF - This may be crazy, but have you loked into what Evernote can do? I was trying to copy a single page nto it a couple of days ago, but my browser had about 8 pages open at the time. Somehow it put all the pages very neatly onto one page. They were tiny, but they were very neatly there. I know ths isn't what it was made for - but hey, if it gets the job done (and it won't cost you anything) - why not. Of course this might involve actually reading the directions (and I know how we all hate that) ...

Strange how asking for help finding a program ended up at Dinner for One, BUT I'm not complaining! graylox, graylox, thank you, thank you! Oh, how funny! Here I sat watching a hilarious video about New Years ON New Years night, LMAO. Much like Miss Sophie, perhaps, I chose to stay home by myself this New Years and have dinner for one. Unlike Madam, I'm doing the whole evening without a James. Read THAT any way you like! Shappy New Yer!

OK, RM. Here's the low-down on UUmerge. One first has to transfer all text files into one directory, which isn't too much of a problem. But then the program, via command line, again no problem, merges all text files into one larger text file.

From there, I could then load that larger text file into PrintFile, and it would do the job, sort of.. I wouldn't get exactly the 4 different pages of the originals, but if that newly combined file was 4 pages long in real life, then PrintFile would have printed it 4-up.....

At the end of the day, and I mean that literally, from testing all these programs, looking for solutions, and searching high and low on the net, I have come round 180 degrees to where I started. That is to say, I'm back to using FinePrint..... Nope, it's not freeware, but it will let me use it on a trial basis, as long as I'm willing to put up with their large banner ad on the bottom of each page... It will accept my 4 pages, or 6 pages, or 8 pages (if I could read that small) and print them all to one sheet of paper, without having to combine them first..

Again, many thanks to all participants in this thread. You are a GREAT bunch of friends to have! :-)

Hey there, Graylox,

Very interesting program be Scribus. Might obsolete my already obsolete version of Quark. Thanks.

If you know anyone at Sourceforge, maybe you could let them know about what seems to be an out of order install process... they have you finish installing the program's executable file in order to reach a README that urges you to install something called Ghostscript BEFORE you install Scribus. Ahem... Kinda late for that now.

That Readme contains other critical notes, too, IMHO. It recommends disabling XPThemes (no prob for me, I use Classic), and it stresses how "intolerant" Scribus is of font quality. Boo hiss, I love freeware fonts!

FwF, it's a writing deadline I'm underwhelmed about, so I'd have found some other excuse to dawdle if not yours. Please try that other prog and give me your best Bladedthoth impression. It seemed useful to me.

Back to the grindstone. Go Redskins!

And graylox, I'll certainly check into SCRIBUS.

Yes, yes you don't want a prog, only a command for your printer - and I know that you know SCRIBUS ?
If not, have a look at it :

"Scribus is an open-source program that brings award-winning professional page layout to Linux/Unix, MacOS X, OS/2 and Windows desktops with a combination of "press-ready" output and new approaches to page layout."

http://www.scribus.net/

http://sourceforge.net/projects/scribus/

I'm afraid the download for the latest release is broken -
I got only 19 kb - take the older Version from sourceforge. The layout is very userfriendly, even I did it ...

FwF, if you make me miss my deadline, why I'm gonna....

Oh well, this thread is like the chewing gum jingle that you can't get outta your head! I've been cogitating for a bit, and figured you might have to resort to a command line interface and write your own batch prog if you want to remove TOF page break's and merge all the files so they print right under each other. However, a key word search uncovered this little freeware thingie. Sounds like it might do it automatically -

http://www.download.ro/~en~/15298/uumerge-freeware-edition.html

This site might give you a bit more confidence than a .ro domain -
http://uumerge-freeware-edition.bradtrupp-com.qarchive.org/

If that don't do it, here's another freebie appl-
http://simpli-file-split-and-merge.batch-technologies.qarchive.org/

Hi, clobermier. I did see that program, and I suppose in the long run, it would work. But again, it would mean me having to take that extra step and combine my files, before printing.

But, seeing as how I haven't actually tried it, I will install it and see if it does close to what I want. It almost looks like I'll have to resort to something like that in order to get the results I'm looking for.

Great suggestions, christory, but I don't use MS office, and about using my printer driver to set things up that way, unfortunately it does not have that feature. I have had printers in the past that would do 4-up and such, but not the one I currently use.

I have no idea if this is something like what you need, Freewarefan, and I haven't tried it, but I saw that it could merge several documents into one file (I assume for printing?). As soon as something says Command Line, though, I blank out.

Thanks for your suggestions, jr46 and graylox!! I really do appreciate all the ideas coming forward in this thread, it's great of the members to help like this!

I agree, that it can be done using another program to combine the 4 txt files into just one, text file, then do the print that way.

But again, what I'm really looking for is to be able to bypass that combining step. Just tell program X that , hey.. here's my 4 txt files, now print them 4-up for me.

I dunno, maybe such a program does not exist??

Maybe I need to jump over to DonationCoder and see if someone there can code a little something, eh?

Hi FF,
how about converting your text to table with
4 cells on a page ? I did this with AbiWord once.

graylox

-I see jr46 was faster-

FF,

You can do this in Word or OpenOffice, I think. (Haven't tried.) Just make 4 text boxes, or frames or maybe a table on a page arranged like you want it. Then copy and paste the text from the other files to their appropriate text box or cell. You might have to resize the text to make it fit properly, and remove the borders if you don't want them.

I think that should work. Plus, this way, you could add a title or something to the page, too.

Hello, RM. Thanks for taking the time, my friend!! I certainly could be missing something, and I'll be the first to admit that.. So, I just now went back, and read the entire Help File (very unusual for me to do). But I still cannot see where I am going wrong. Here is the scenario: I set the program to print 4-up.. 2 X 2 . I select 4 text files. I click on Print. The program is off and running, but it only will print each individual file on a piece of paper. Then it kicks out the paper, and starts on the second txt file, printing it on it's own piece of paper. Kicks that out, and prints the third piece of paper. And finally, the same with the final 4th txt file, on it's own piece of paper.

Now, what I'm wanting is for those 4 txt files to be printed on just one piece of paper, in a 4-up configuration.

And I was actually wrong in my post above, where I said I would have to put the paper in 4 separate times to get them on one sheet. I actually spent the time to try that, but it doesn't work, because each time the program goes to print the next file in the queue, it just starts printing in the upper left quadrant of the page, always. So, that wouldn't even work if I wanted it to.

The program does print the txt files small enough that 4 of them would fit on one page, if I could just figure out how to make it print all of them in that one pass..

Unless I'm missing something, I think what this program does is to print 4-up, or 2-up, or whatever, just using one file at a time. If that file is a huge size, that's when the result will be a 4-up printed piece of paper.

Now, that's a good thing in and of itself, if one has to print a huge size txt file. But more what I'm looking for is a program that will print 4 small txt files, all onto one page using a 4-up config.

Hope I am more clear now on what I need...

Thanks again!!

Rats... here I only have a couple minutes to hop on and skim GAOTD, noticed I owe hamstergirl, lekanaw, whiterabbit and idahl replies/cool links, so what do I do... prepare a reply to freewarefan since I think I have a solution to his quest. But he goes and beats me to it by nixing PrintFile before I can post my link! grrrrrrr

http://lerup.com/printfile/

FWF - It didn't sound like it requires multiple printer passthru's. That's really primitive for something that claims to be compatible even with Vista. Any chance you're missing a step in the configuration process? I'm just asking cause I don't use the program myself. Even my infamous Micrografx Draw appl from the 90's produces folded cards by printing on four quadrants in one pass.

Ooops, almost forgot a second idea (scroll down through the question to the detailed response, FwF... maybe this'll help ya) -
http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=754123
Note- the link to FreewarePDF is no longer working, and I'm cut for time. Wish I could search for it. Sorry!!!! This site was associated with freewarepdf by a google search, but perhaps only because google searches ignore hyphens sometimes. It seemed to offer a description of the techniques but not a link to that particular appl, just other pdf creators. http://arjenvankol.com/freeware-pdf.php

I'll be back! Happy New Years, all.

Thanks for that link, BuBBy!

My journey this time took me towards a deadend, unfortunately. The three programs I tried were PC Book 2, PrintFile, and TxtPrint. None of them really did what I'm looking for. PrintFile came the closest, seeing as how it would do 4-up printing, but the downside is that you have to run it thru the printer 4 separate times, once for each page getting printed. A real pain. And none of those programs have a preview feature, letting you see what you will ultimately wind up with.

But as I said, many thanks for the link, maybe someone else will have some suggestions..
