LeKanaw - maybe I was wrong to say it's okay to "hijack" the thread. Once it rolls over to page 2 and beyond, it's hard to remember what's been said. We were getting kinda silly, and you had a hard time posting for a while, so I can't recall if you ever noticed my links to on-line scanners on page 1.

Methinks FwF makes a valid point to suggest you start a new thread (or maybe even TWO) for questions/concerns about HIPS, and Imaging/Cloning. I have no need for HIPS at this time so I'm the wrong one to offer guidance. However, IMHO, we may have passed a critical point in the ever-escalating war between hackers and security software that makes it too risky for novices or new/small businesses to try to maintain their own servers and SysAdmin/Security Depts even as the up front cost of memory and processing power come down.

Regarding HIPS, I've always found that to be a volatile (dangerous) topic to discuss around women! :-)

@FF: Huhh?? You are doing this on purpose are you not??
Mauvais garnement!! New words on each post!!! Trying to confuse me :-)
What is this crud you speak of?
Don't like the colour of this one. What do you mean?

When you finish this thread...
Well, it's ok if you don't have time to answer, don't worry about it, you must be super-busy.
I'm still hoping that a kind soul will come by and address any of the questions that are up in the air...
I thought I had put the questions down rather well, so I didn't suppose that that would be the problem. Oh well...
See you soon, be well, and don't go around imagining "Piffedenesss"...
Ahhh, new word!! I win!!!!!! :-)
Bye, Manu

Hiya, LK. You're a sharp cookie! You said Didn't know that for you it had a "bad" connotation. Very observant of you! Yep, comes from my childhood, from having parents that argued a lot. No discussions, but real arguments. So, I tend to go out of my way not to argue, and if I feel that one is in the brew, I'll back off if possible.

Earlier I posted my security set-up & specs, to have comments & advice. I guess I missed that post. This thread has already taken so many twists and turns, I was lost a long time ago. Not to mention that I'm dealing with some crud in my personal life right now, so I'm a bit out of sorts at the moment.

But tell you what. When you finish this thread, why not start another one, a thread that is specific to just one question, and I'll do my best to answer anything I can for you there, OK? :-) And don't let all this *knowledge* stuff get to you.. it takes time, and for some, well they just never do get it at all. It's like anything else, learning is an ongoing process, one that's never really complete at all...

Glad you're not piffed! :-)

Bye for now.

FF: Hey buddy, what are u talking about??
Nobody is mad or piffed (Nice word & new to me, I like new words! each has it's own colour).
I was referring to the "supposed" argument you were having w RM, the crazy type arguments we always have 'round here!
Well, as I said 'after all this arguing', the 2 of you forgot I'm still looking for answers for my MANY problems & queries...
Besides, who said arguing is bad?? I like arguing, in my opinion it's a good positive thing. Didn't know that for you it had a "bad" connotation.

I'm just fed up for not knowing more, so I wouldn't need to always ask, you know?
This is all sooo damn confusing, there are so many/opposite opinions about the exact same thing, sometimes I do feel like screaming!!
But it's all good, let me scream in peace... ;-)
Earlier I posted my security set-up & specs, to have comments & advice.
Did you have a chance to read it??

So, I'll stay here waiting for any help.
So, talk to me.

PS: Huhh, how do you put words in Bold or Italic in the posts? Don't even know how to do that... Snifff

Hey, LeKanaw... I'm feeling that you are piffed at me for some reason? You said And, after all this arguing w FF about the scanners, well, I hope that you really don't take it that way?

It wasn't my intent to argue with anyone, about anything. I only voiced my opinion, and was by no means trying to cause anyone any undue distress. I hope you know that?

And with that, I think it would probably behoove me to exit from this thread. I've probably caused enough damage for one day.... Wasn't meant to be this way, folks....

@RM, Yes I know *you* were kidding about the hijacking, but I've already been told in the past that I wasn't following proper procedure, so u know...

Did u get my certified letter?? Do you have enough gold to pay your debt in full? Cause my people know some people that could do some mighty damage... Heeheeee! :-)

About the tech stuff, do u have more advice, insights?
Is my security set-up so so, what should I change?
What do you think about DefenseWall? Do you use any of the HIPS stuff?
How, what, where, Arghhhh. I'm fed up w the Not Knowing!!
And, after all this arguing w FF about the scanners, I want to know what do you use?

Merci mon ami, à bientôt

Well, Vladimir, if you trust MY judgement, then YOURS is suspect! :-)

Lekanaw, there is NO need to apologize, as my comment about hijacking was meant mirthfully, and was done tongue-in-cheek. I'm enjoying the repartee. Well, except for, you know, that Freeware guy. hee hee hee
Wow, I did the exact thing with Win95, from '92 to mid-'07, and it still runs, only it's no longer allowed on the Internet, not even with a leash.
I once dreamed of owning a bookshoppe... started out slow via SCOP, and then Dart Drug launched Crown, the category killer, and I heard the bell tolling. Best wishes on a successful venture.

@ LeKanaw About the Gizmo gig. It's all sort of hush hush at the moment, so I'm not really at liberty to give out any particulars regarding format change, eta of new format, things of that nature.

Hi RM, hope you had a little rest and are feeling great about the world.
Sorry again about the thread hijacking.
Thank you for the link for the Acronis v XClone, I'll be studying it tonight.

Wanted to tell you that NO!!, we are certainly NOT rich entrepreneurs, on the contrary, there is no money to make in a small bookstore, just a lot of passion for books.
We only have 1 GOOD PC. The other 2 we bought a few months ago for the bookstore, and are cheap stuff we got on sale for $350. The Laptops are almost 3y. old, the Toshiba we paid full price, but the Acer we got an end of the line deal for $600.
So 5 computers may appear like a big thing, but in reality it's not.
Prior to that I worked on the same PC from 1993 to 2006 w Windows.95, but than it died... Why??? I treated it well!! Stupid machine... ;*)

Indeed we are going to buy a 1TB external very soon, not bc we have that much data {no porn either :-)}, but to be able to store somewhere the OS Imaging/Clones from all the computers. Plus of course, my husband's hummungus music collection that keeps on growing... (bc I keep finding rarities he likes, and bc I still have to sub his also hummungus vinyl LP collection, so I do indeed dwld a lot of music)

Stuff is more expensive here. I think a 1TB MyBook wireless is around $450.
Don't know if MyBook is a good choice or not, someone suggested it, haven't investigated it yet.

I know the $300. for the 5 Acronis is not the end of the world, it's more a question of making the right choice, otherwise it's A LOT of time wasted, by investing in learning h2 operate many different s/w. It's more a question of time(that I have very little of!)

Muchas gracias también, Manu

There, there, LeKanaw, don't cry, don't scream, don't kill yerself! Everything's gonna be okay. (well, it's really not, it's just gonna get worse, but someone told me to practice my e-consoling skills... so, how'd I do?)

If you have some computer proficiency, you might want to try installing Sandboxie on one computer at a time to get the hang of it. http://www.sandboxie.com/
GAOTD recently offered something similar, I don't recall how it fared in ratings/reviews.

Hope you take my advice and install that free alternative to Acronis, if only as a stop gap measure.

This is excerpted from a practicing safe computer guide I put together for a few newbies.
These are scanners I consider safe to use -
Panda Software's Nanoscan - http://www.infectedornot.com/usa/
Verisign's - http://www.verisign.com/advisor/check.html
Scannit's Browser Test - http://bcheck.scanit.be/bcheck/
Steve Gibson's GRC site (This guy's has earned my trust for over a decade, but his site has grown so large, novices may get lost or confused running all his tests) To start, try - http://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?rh1dkyd2
http://www.firewallleaktester.com/index.html
Microsoft's Malware tester (different than WinDefender) - http://tinyurl.com/6bb67
X-Cleaner Free online scan (see right hand box) - http://www.xblock.com/
VundoFix by Atribune - http://vundofix.atribune.org/
TrendMicroHousecall - http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
MSFT's rootkit revealer - http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/RootkitRevealer.mspx
If one particular file seems suspicious, you should obviously do a google search by filename if it's an .exe or .dll, but for any type of file, try - http://www.virustotal.com/
Needless to say, make a regular habit to run any scanners built into your OS, firewall and anti-virus software.

@ RM FwF, you've a slight tendency to skim and overgeneralize, dontcha?
Guilty as charged. I'll turn in all my personal effects at the front desk, and head on down to the dungeon. I hope you didn't publish your Factoid. Nope, I rarely even voice my opinion about it to others, because I have learned in the past that most people will come right back at me and tell me that I'm bonkers. It's always the same... if one does not voice the same opinion as the majority, then they are open targets. That applies to anything in life, yes?

@ LK I said in my comment that there will be many opinions that are different from mine, most people in fact disagree with me. There are many, many people who are absolutely convinced that one cannot and should not operate a computer without antivirus, security, and other failsafe programs running to protect them. I just shrug my shoulders, and smile. We all have different realities in life, we all perceive things by way of our own experiences. But mostly it comes down to this: People want to feel secure. If they spend money and run programs that are touted as providing that security, then people will be at ease. I mean, you never hear of a large company getting hacked, do you? You never hear of a major website having a security breach, do you? You do?? Oh, well, maybe their software just didn't cost enough, eh?

Yes, I'm being snide to express a point... No matter what, the best defense, is proper education and proper safeguards, period. But, my opinion is just the way BuBBy expressed it, the lone opinion echoing down a deserted street...

So, just get the best, most expensive security software you can afford, and you'll have a measure of peace and security. OK? OK!

Look at it in the big picture sense. It will do you no harm to run all those programs, just cost you some money. And you may gain a sense of security. Until, the first time you are let down by those programs. Then you'll ask yourself why did it happened? Why did you spend all that money, and still get infected or compromised? Then someone else will just look at you, shrug their shoulders, and smile..... Maybe say to you, "Well, you should have been using Program XX all along. You just used the wrong program!" :-)

Yawwwwn.... good morn, thread hijackers,

Thoughts - FwF, you've a slight tendency to skim and overgeneralize, dontcha? I really didn't "swear by xcleaner", only tossed it into the ring because of the Dell tech's rec and what it did. Unlike the ripoff scanners that pretend to find things but won't tell ya til you fork over cash, any scanner I mention will simply do its job to the best of its abilities and keep the nagging to a minimum. There has been is no nagging (as of yet) with xcleaner. As for scribblink and other juicy finds I've made, sometimes one just needs to poke around a bit to locate the cool stuff.

"95% of private individuals with a proper education don't need scanners". I hope you didn't publish your Factoid on Educated Computer Users as an Op Ed. Methinks it's in need of editing - According to Elmo Fuddnicker, professor emeritus, Humanity's Flaws 101, 99% of computer users, including:
kids,
parents with kids,
employees who secretly bring flash cards home from work,
yuppies who entertain or hire illegal alien maids,
newlyweds ISO "spice",
lonely people ISO "spice",
the elderly ISO miracles,
computerphobes,
anyone whose firewall is disconnected even for the 30-seconds it takes sniffers to find open ports,
normally alert people who even once might fall for a well-crafted phishing expedition,
anyone who inadvertantly clicks on a link that diverts them to malacious sites that instantly download crap or to a legit site that's been hacked,
anyone stupid enough to open an email with the teaser subject line "Hi!" or "loCost pHrmacY MeDz",
and those who think they're too smart to fall for phishers and con artists
all lack the "proper education" to surf without scanners. Globally, commonsense is in short supply.
BTW, the other 1% are off-line having their computers reformatted.

:-)

About Scanners, Security, etc
I don't really care much about popularity, and I believe Gizmo advocates the same, ie Prevention above all, right? So mostly, I already agree and follow that assessment.
It is true we don't have state secrets or visit questionable websites, so that helps. But, voilà, my problem is when visiting perfectly "normal or reputable" sites, that were suddenly infected w malware. Don't know if u remember, just recently this happened on some MySpace pages (Alicia Keys and others), for example.
http://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,1683361,00.html?iid=feed-biz_ad
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VipylmHnII&feature=RecentlyWatched&page=1&t=t&f=b
One moment a site is safe, one goes there often without problems, then Kaboom!!
Then, what do we do? It's the "after" I'm concerned about.

We are security conscious, we have a router(2 in fact: Home office & the bookstore), Kaspersky, Spyware Terminator, we use Spybot(even though it's reputation is down a lot, don't know if it's still worth it...), CCleaner, Ad-Aware, we don't dwld wheely-neely, have Windows updates installed('almost' always on time, not enough hours on the day...), we only surf w FF and lately added McAfee & LinkScanner(which I find VERY useful, don't know how we did without it before!)

Lately, we've dwlded DefenseWall Hips (from GOTD) onto the main PC, but have not yet started using it. We thought it could be a good idea to try, since Gizmo been talking about Sandboxing as his new approach to security {Newsletter Editorial #141-143-144}.

So I thought good scanner(s) could be useful & reassuring. I was talking about online scanners, that we could use from time to time, to pick under the hood.
Any thoughts or advice would be welcomed, either adding to or change the current security set-up we're using.

Thank you, Manu
(Well, lets just hope this post goes through now!)

I agree 100%! Uneducated users absolutely should use any reputable AV, Scanner, and Security program they can get their hands on!! Companies also fall into that category, because who knows how many uneducated employees they have using their computers.

But, overall, as you have, I believe, agreed upon, the even better solution is education and awareness. That education and awareness brings with it a much reduced need for those types security programs mentioned. That was my entire intent when I voice my opinion that only those with the proper education can, for the most part, ignore the craze for AVs and such.

Now, at this point, I think it prudent for me to make mention of the fact that I haven't even begun to express what I believe is a "proper education". That would be for another thread entirely.... :-)

Yes, they are certainly different.

Although the assumption that you have to do "something bad" to get "something bad" - no longer applies today. Also "AntiVirus" is no longer just about viruses.

Computer Security also covers Spyware, Worms, Phishing, Privacy & Identity Fraud, Spam, Security Vulnerabilities in the OS and Applications (and the list goes on).

This only further highlights the need for user education and diligence. Too often users install AntiVirus software and think they are "safe". They don't understand what the alerts mean, the concept of false positives, the difference between signature based and heuristic based detection and their weaknesses.

Admittedly I might be a fair distance from the middle of the bell curve in terms of professional IT security experience - I don't think to obtaining a basic awareness about PC security is too much to expect from users. It is important.

Many users cling to security myths as truths and this isn't a bad thing if they are safer than doing nothing at all - indeed any antivirus protection is better than running with nothing at all - and this includes those free ones (although I won't use them).

Well, I don't know that Everyone is silent, I only posted it about an hour ago.. And here in the US, most are probably still sleeping.

You also did not quote me in full context. I did say that one needs "a GOOD education about how to be safe, yes?

I did not say across the board that 95% of people don't need antivirus. I said that 95% of people who are well educated about how to avoid viruses, trojans, and rootkits in the first place, don't need scanners and AVs.

Now, you'll admit, there is a difference in those two concepts, yes? :-)
