I'm not exactly sure where that site is, Lee. I know I could do a ping and traceroute to find out, but I don't have the time right now. But, I do know that using their server, I only get 1/10th of my usual speed. So, I'm thinking that they are far, far away from the middle of the USA !

@FF

Well, what were your results, BuBBy?

On both up and down I'm @ about 90% of maximum.

But on 512/128 Kbit/s, that's not too bad. (Truth be known, I can't pedal much faster - so I can't really blame the network for being under powered).

Don't forget, if your results seem "unusually high" - try rebooting your PC (maybe your modem too) and give the test another shot. (Don't forget to get a screenshot first, so you can email it to your friends to brag).

If your results seem too low, ring up your ISP and tell them there is a bomb in their call centre - actually on second thought - that's not such a clever idea - they might be able to recognize your voice - it is probably safer to email them ;)

Well, good!! I'm glad I could provide some comic relief around here.... It was starting to get a bit stuffy in here, time for some levity, ya know?

@RM you kill me, bud! Simply slay me!! :-) What other results did you expect, zipping around on that magic carpet you use?

@LK Lot's of things bring me joy. I'm an affable sort of fellow, so life just naturally provides me with lots of joyful things.... :-) Yes, you're getting to know me, alright! I eat exotic foods whilst sitting at the monitor staring at speedtest results. bfg

@DD Nice results you get, but then I would expect that, seeing as how we both have the same ISP! LOL Cable is much better than DSL, in my experience. Not to mention the reliability factor. When I had DSL, it would go out on me on avg of at least 6 times a year, but with cable, it's only once gone dead, and then only for about 3 hours.

I've used speedtest.net for a while now. The best I've come across. You can compare to your own past tests, compare with other ISP results from other users etc. I used to have AT&T yahoo DSL. Paid for speeds "up to" 3 Mb/sec. Speedtest.net never showed over 2 Mb/sec. Now I have Insight Broadband with "up to" 10 Mb/sec. Speedtest.net consistently shows me at about 10.5Mb/sec. every time. AT&T even tried telling us "There's NO WAY ANYONE can offer you 10Mb/sec. when we told them we're getting rid of them. Our new service is only $5.00 more per month than the DSL was.

Hi FF, you'r funny :-)
That a free speedtest can bring you joy is a good statement on you.
I didn't realize this was a "super dooper" test, it's the one I've been using, well it's the only one I know... So it's good, ya?
I like that it keeps all the tests we make, so over the months one has a better idea.
But, on one of the test we got 20,076kbs, which has to be a mistake, bc it's always btwn 5 to 7,000kbs, so...
Bye, Manu

Free, I'm not sure your site is accurate. My gas gauge reads Empty, the radar detector is beeping, the breathalyzer tells me I've had so many drinks my breath is a fire hazard, the GPS unit is gyrating wildly and OnStar just rang to ask if I was lost. OTOH, I tried Bubby's site and it warns of a fast chase involving OJ Simpson and suggests I pull off at the next rest stop and wait for congestion to clear.

Well, what were your results, BuBBy?

Compared with what your ISP said you "could" get, how did yours fare?

Looks very nice. Nothing like some fancy graphics to jazz up what is otherwise a fairly unexciting task.

Of course, people should be aware that the advertised speeds from ISPs is really the "potential" of what speeds you should get under ideal conditions (which is why you should test against multiple servers, at different times of the day). It is important to clear your cache/reset your browser/reboot etc between tests, to get results that are not affected by previous tests.

As the saying goes, "a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link", and if the server you are accessing (or net between yourself and the server) is busy or congested, then your speedtest will reflect the lower test results also.

Another handy site, is the internet "eye in the sky" traffic report - giving you the run down on what the internet traffic is doing around the globe. Very handy for identifying trouble spots.

Since my days on a 300 baud dialup modem, I've tried my share of speedtest sites. Well, I just ran across one that takes the cake! Mere words will not describe it's virtues and features, so don't just take my word for it, go give it a try. See how close to being truthful your ISP is when they quoted you a speed when you signed up for their service.

For example, my ISP said I would get up to 10Meg download speed. Now, of course, I've verified this before now, but never in such an impressive way. So, if you really want to know what your speeds are, go to this site, and see what's what. You can test your speed using a HUGE selection of servers, worldwide.

My tested speed, after 3 tests from 3 different worldwide locations, came out to be 10430 kb/s . My ISP didn't stretch the truth, not one bit.

How about yours, lets get some input from you folks... How well does your speed hold up compared to what your ISP said it would be??

http://www.speedtest.net/index.php
