Um..logmein is SSL'd with 258bits of security (that's really good), but remote desktop (given here before) is not encrypted very well, and someone could packet sniff as the encryption isn't that great and get your password.

Bill, you sound a bit too paranoid to even be using the Internet. Of course all information is accessible on the Internet in one form or another. That's the whole point. Granted, if you only want to access your machines internally, you're absolutely going about it the right way. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people out there who require access to their computers from outside their internal network. LogMeIn does it safely and doesn't require you to know much more than your password to make it possible.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not at all claiming it's 100% secure. But it sounds to me you're a little over protective of something that's accessible to anyone who really wants it anyway. If your computer is connected to the Interent, regardless of whether you're behind a firewall, you are at risk. Plain and simple.

Yeah, I still have my Palm IIIxe. It's now used mainly for note taking. I also have my Axim for other uses.

Thing is with Windows Mobile devices, you can also use StyleTap which emulates the Palm OS and can run a good deal (not all) Palm programs.

"Remote Desktop Control" - I want that LOL...sounds simple and easy to use and for $15 per PC it's not bad pricing either. Wish I knew about this site during the time of that giveaway.

Good point tjchan. I too have PDAs, but I seriously doubt this would work with my old Palm IIIc. And I installed VNC on one of my computers, but I saw a ton of settings and I thought this would be hard to learn. Maybe I was mistaken, but it looked that way to me. "Remote Desktop Control" was very easy though. Two clicks and I am connected remotely.

There's always VNC, but the thing that I really desire is PDA access and that limits many options as Windows Mobile does not have JAVA support.

I've been using "Remote Desktop Control" which was a giveaway of the day here. I can use it totally on my home network with going outside on the Internet at all. I just don't like the idea of passing all of your information outside of your network. Yes you have to, if you want to access a computer outside of your network.

Even if they don't grab information off of their servers, this information can still read from others on the Internet. This also includes everything you do on the Internet. This is why banks and checkout websites use secure connections. Thus anybody monitoring will not make any sense out of it. Since the connection is encrypted.

I've used LogMeIn for almost a year now (the free version) without any issues. It's an incredible tool. I've never had any privacy issues with them ever.

A little bit of technical information for those that don't understand how it works:

LogMeIn uses a server to connect you to your computer. It then passes the connection off to your computer. In short, it creates a direct connection from the computer you're on, to the computer you're accessing. The only password LogMeIn ever sees is the password that you yourself create as a way to connect to your PC. It has nothing to do with your Windows password or any other passwords you use once you've established the connection.

This works the same as VNC and all variations of it. The only difference is the LogMeIn servers make the connection for you, then passes you off to the computer. Hope that clears things up.

Umm... Your computers are routed through their servers. Meaning they can see all of your passwords, etc. This doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

WOW! What a program - and for free as well! This IS the solution for remote controlling your desktop from another computer. Even better, mobile devices like Dell Axims have support as well - so I can access my desktop via my PDA. Sweeet.

The Free version allows only remote desktop - but if you have an FTP client and a webserver (any that supports FTP), suddenly you can transfer files and do remote printing etc.

http://www.logmein.com

Anyway, I'm just having too much fun as I'm controlling my PC from my PDA right now. ^_^
