(well, an old free music site that disappeared to revamp its flawed business model) </p> <p>They make you sign up before you can get a full tour, so pull out one of your disposable email addies. It offers <strong>ad free</strong> streaming music or low cost downloads. For a little background color on the site, read <strong><a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27286697/">this.</a></strong></p> <p>Relaunch is scheduled for today. Seems to be open already, but with a buggy browser interface... unless you maximize the browser, the window's vertical scroll disappears. </p> <p>The streaming is supposed to be free, but I encountered a nag screen that says I could listen to anything ONCE, but then had to put it in a "web locker" for unlimited use. Per the article, that costs a dime per tune lockered. <strong>UPDATE</strong> - when adding a song to the "web locker" you're told that the first 50 added are FREE, so maybe it's worth signing up after all. Looks similar to SLACKER, hopefully with a more intuitive GUI. You can create your own custom radio music list (personal radio station concept), or just listen to singles. Registration required to buiild a list. Only drawback to listening to singles comes after a song ends and another "similar" song automatically plays. NO COMMERCIALS, JUST MUSIC 24/7.</p> <p>Although navigating the user-interface takes some getting used to, it not only allows me to create free "stations" and pick my favorite artists, based on my ratings, I can limit it to just my favorite song titles. Other people can listen to my stations, (not that I want the world to know I only listen to old show tunes and live metallica concerts) but only I can decide what the content is. As Slacker expands their artist inventory, they claim they won't even have to fill the occasional gap with "similar artists". They've already got most of the artists I like, so that hasn't been a nuisance. </p> <p>Navigating starts by hunting for the tiny sign in hyperlink near the upper right of the main page. </p> <p>Go through the free registration process (no spamming that I've seen) and then follow instructions to create your own station and pick your artists. They broadcast 3 songs and then you have to register. Registration is just an e-mail address confirmation. I think I've gotten 1 e-mail from them since I registered, which has been over a year now.
