I found the answer at least to my slow downloads. I used my external browser (not AOL) and it downloads great. For any having trouble if you are using AOL try opening an external browser without AOL and see if it helps you too.

Today I thought I'd deliberately download when I anticipated the wikifortio site would be busy. Both the program and game were downloaded about 50 minutes into the giveaway - and both downloads arrived using 100% of my possible (although comparatively slow) 512kbit/sec

Still all I can do is pass on the comment that for some people some of the time, wikifortio is slow. The option remains to download using one of the available mirrors.

I downloaded from wikifortio at 3 hours into the giveaway and then at 6 hours into it.

Both downloaded in less than 5 minutes. I am downloading from the east coast of Australia. I can't explain why it is slow for some people. Perhaps it could be something like the slashdot effect - everyone hitting the download servers at once?

Is the mirror just as slow?

OMG I have not been able to succesfully download anything for over a week now. I have written to WIK and GOTD with no replies. So many things I have been unable to download. The speed ranges from 1-5 kps and then when it does finish the file is corupt and wont open. Any suggestions? I have rebooted, cleaned browsers, virus checked, registry cleaned and anything else I can think of. Not even the mirror site works. Its just as slow yet I have DSL and every other site downloads just fine.

Hi folks!
Just recently discovered this site, and I like the idea! However, I experience the same problems despite broadband access. Even worse, my downloads simply collapse after a while with transfer rates of 0.0kB! The download speed is so slow I could say hello to every byte that's arriving at my computer.

I was able to download Aquaball a couple of days ago, but with yesterday's "Stand O'Food" and today's "Azangara" I can't get past 3-4% and then the download simply stops. Last attempt with Azangara: 414kB after 2:54min.

Could you guys please please please put the games on a different server? The wikifortio is a desaster!

Many thanks
Maui74

still having problems with download times even on todays (1.65mb) which should have taken a few seconds took 20 minutes but thanks to all who replied, i have solved the timeout problem by using star downloader which just keeps trying until the download is complete but i still think that lee is right about wikifortio putting a limit on speeds as after using the 2nd mirror link (not wikifortio) yesterday the download only took seconds

I have also noticed a massive drop in speed.

It's the speed of a d.a.c.s. / fax modem line speed currently.

Between 9kb s-1 and 17kb s-1.

Big drop from 750-900kb s-1.

I am sure the servers that hosts these files might be putting a speed limit, as it might be the the GAOTD owners pay a smaller premium and save money for a slower speed.

Not a problem I use a download manager for speeds that slow, so one can make some tea and come back and hear:

I would agree with BuBBy, I tried, this morning at 0900 UK time, and was unable to get the GAOTD as the connection kept timing out. Once I did get in Game-GAotD was even worse.
I gave up, waited a couple of hours. Now it's quick and slick. Pity really 'cos after all that the game, Aqua MahJong won't work.

It could be wikifortio. (Try one of the other mirrors)

I probably should mention that as well as there being a "rush" on downloads at the start of a giveaway - I assume there is also a "panic rush" in the last hour when all the procrastinators jump on and grab the download before it is too late.

Also if you have problems with the giveaway with half an hour remaining - there is a very good chance the problem posted in the forums will not be seen or fixed before the giveaway expires. Getting in earlier does buy some extra "troubleshooting time" if needed.

If possible I leave it for 10 or 12 hours into the giveaway. The theory is that the download site will not be as busy as the "rush" is over by then. (I expect the first 2 or 3 hours places a fairly solid load on the servers).

Obviously the loads on the download sites need to be monitored to ensure that they can keep up with demand.

Although, to be honest when there are problems inside the downloads themselves - I try to download ASAP so I can help or answer questions.

I've had similar problems the past few days, and yesterday, the download from the mirror link would be corrupted. I generally don't use the Wikifortio download, just the mirror site, so having to wait forever for the download to complete and then finding it corrupted was a bit irritating. The downloads were so slow that on Thursday I completely missed out on both the game giveaway and the giveaway of the day. I'm not sure what's wrong, because I've been coming to GAOTD for a year now, and never experienced anything like that before. I, too, have a 10MB broadband connection, and even reboots didn't help fix the download problems for me, either.

I did end up finally getting it downloaded. Can you believe I had to use a download accelerator with a 10MB broadband connection?!?!? Even then it was only going at about 25KB/sec. I can download from anywhere else MUCH MUCH faster than that.
