I did hear a whisper that a major player might be offering a decent software give away, but... keep it to yourself!

You're in IT networking and you don't think there's ever a case where lowering your firewall may be needed to activate software? That's just a shortcut to thinking... Any IT networking pro knows if you have your firewall configured to block all internet activity... programs that need to activate themselves through the internet... can't.

Major programs and tiny programs... from AutoCad to Windows need to connect to the internet and activate, Even games.. Battlefield 2142 won't even play SinglePlayer until you activate an online account. If you don't lower your firewall.. in many cases you won't get an activated product. What's the difference here at GOTD? Even if you believe they haven't done the legwork in checking the program for malware... you can scan the thing yourself.

Besides you're really not dropping your firewall.. you're just allowing internet access for a program that'll never run again (setup.exe or activate.exe). Most firewalls... when it prompts you of the internet access attempt... you can select "this time only" anyway.

It comes down to trust I guess... do you trust what you're getting from GOTD? why would you trust programs you pay for any more than programs that are free for a day? I guess you got your reasons.. but don't try and swing the "that's just a no no in terms of asking to be infected with spyware" comment by us. Maybe in a case where you're paranoid and think the entire computing world is out to get you (we are BTW)... or even if you didn't know WHY you're computer needed access to the internet. But in this case you know why... you do know why don't you?

If I installed "Mechanical DeskTop" today... I couldn't enjoy the program after 30 days unless I allowed it internet access for activation. Even free anti-Virus programs are this way.. AVG or Avast... The programs here at GOTD are no different.. they're giving us programs that normally are sold.. we'd have to buy them.. they're no different than other programs you can buy and have to activate over the internet.

Back on topic... Yes.. I think GOTD is STILL on vacation... But it's good for the peeps that missed it all the first time around. I'm glad to hear that Lee is hearing whispers of big players... are they as big as Wondershare or Eltima Software or even KC Softwares? lol. j/k

I say GOTD deserves as big a vacation as they want... but.. they should also come back.. :)

Lately I can not activate ANY program on offer.

I'm in IT Networking, some pc's activate fine at home others don't, I'm not de-activating my firewall to install software, ever, that's just a no no in terms of asking to be infected with spyware etc

Depends what they have to offer, I guess - maybe they have a few re-offers or version updates available if there is nothing better to do on the day.

I doubt we'll ever see any A-list software here, it's mostly Z-list, other than the occasional niche product looking for greater exposure.

There are a few I would mark as "B-list", Aston shell being the most recent, as probably the most significant commercial Windows shell replacement. Another was VSO Blindwrite... would be nice to see a few more of theirs roll in.

So is giveaway of the day done giving out programs that haven't been given away here before? I noticed the programs coming around for rotation to be given away were either already on my machine because of the previous giveaway of the program.. or I remember not installing them the first time around.

Good while it lasted I guess...
