To continue Theleecher's list, I'm going to add Hamachi and Kali. It's not quite the same kind of software (it's VPN software), but it can also be used to redirect network games to the internet when they don't have a central internet server.

Point well taken Bubby. You're a gamer at heart. But again, I think it's a definition thing. Let's take your classic car reference. It could be the greatest sportscar in the world, but if it doesn't have a CD stereo, a good look (by my standards), and good speed off the start, I'd put it in the "lame" catagory along with the Edsel. Even as I write this, I know there are ppl who are saying the "Edsel" isn't lame. But it certainly is. So let's just agree to disagree.

For those who want to network play (and wth the patch for XP, network play is disabled), there is a solution:

http://planetcnc.gamespy.com/View.php?view=TechTroopers.Detail&id=2
Using a Virtual COM port connection over TCP/IP - though the trial program suggested there can probably be replaced by:

http://com0com.sourceforge.net/ - Com2TCP open source - there is a server mode available - http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=1756743&forum_id=440109 - howto.

Or http://www.hw-group.com/products/hw_vsp/index_en.html - while it's main purpose is to support their external units, it can also be used as a virtual com port to TCP/IP, or with client/server mode, as a COM - TCP/IP - COM link between two COM port applications on different machines.

Yes. Rude. But I'm not that "old" - I started playing FPS games with Wolfenstein 3D (Although I also played - as a child - the original Castle Wolfenstein - and "Beyond" - by Muse Software on the Apple). I was there when Doom, Duke Nukem, ROTT, Heretic, Hexen, Quake, Unreal, and Half Life were released. For the last seven years I have been with the same clan that today owns and runs several Counterstrike servers (1.6, CZ and Source), and play BF2 and BF2142 and I will have my copy of Unreal 3 and Crysis reserved the same day they are available for sale.

So while I am quite possibly "older" than you - I believe the experience that comes with gaming over the years counts for more than you realise. I would suggest that an open mind is active, and someone with a closed mind has pretty much shut down.

Great games available today - in 5 years time will still be great games. They don't become 'lame' because they won't support features that don't currently exist.

To use a car as an example - a classic sports car - might be one of the greatest cars ever made. It doesn't become "lame" or "a lemon" just because it doesn't have satellite navigation, electric seats, power steering, and 27 airbags.

But that is something you will only be able to appreciate when you have enough experience and memories to look back on. Assuming you can remember how great that game was you were playing last week....

I understand the point. Entertainment to one person isn't necessarily entertainment to another. I think some of the games that are given away here at GOTD are on the lame side. Not all of them are, but to me, some are. These same games that I think are lame might be exactly what somebody else thinks is the best thing since "Space Invaders".

I usually play nothing but 3D FPS games, yet I still hold a place in my heart for a lame-O game like "Missile Command". I love playing the game. It's all in entertainment value. "Pong" may be lame but Araknoid clone games can be quite involved and are nothing but "Breakout" clones when it comes down to it. And some could argue that "Breakout" is nothing but a "Pong" decendent anyway.

C&C wasn't a giveaway here at GOTD anyway, it's just a link from Lee. All this is moot. Free is Free. Thx Lee!

By your argument, "Pong" is a wonderful game. But again.. I would put "pong" in the lame catagory too. Maybe we're not speaking the same lingo "Pops". Maybe your definition of lame is diferent than mine. "Pong" is lame and so is "space Invaders" and so is this version of C&C. Here endeth the lesson.

It's great to hear from the "Older" crowd that loves these nostagia games. It's great to see you still play the games to keep the mind going and to ward off Alzheimer's... but by today's standard of games.. they're lame and not much of a game at all.

But as TripHammer said, well worth the free price.

"Yeah it's lame because it's old". That's a ridiculous thing to say! Would you say that about an old car? an old movie? An old song? An old book? If anything people would play this to appreciate where the entire RTS genre originated from - with games like C&C and Dune etc.

You don't watch a classic movie from the 50s or 60s and say it's a bad movie because the special effects in todays movies are flashier or the explosions are bigger.

While lots of younger gamers might not even remember this - I still enjoy playing "retro" games from the early 1980s (via emulation). I grew up with these games and considering the limitations and the confines that game developers had to work within - many of these games are amazing.

If someone judges a classic game (that is now 12 years old) to be lame because it isn't as good as todays games - I'm afraid you have completely missed the point, or perhaps you have confused the concepts of gameplay and originality with higher-res graphics and surround sound (Being the "equivalents" that today are often presented to mask the lack of gameplay and originality).

Don't forget that many of todays blockbuster hit games, are often derivatives, descendants or direct copies of ideas and concepts pioneered by these "lame" games.

I'd agree with both of you. The game is lame by today's standards and certainly is outdated. But it's free and is a good example of BASIC RTS games. RTS games today blow this out of the water but you got to pay for them. Personally I like FPS games myself.

eh.. Comand & Conquer is lame by today's standards. The game is 12 years old on top of it. There's much better RTS games on the market now with much better themes.
