personally, i love these two sites , that i visit daily along with giveawayoftheday, that have reviews to the freeware that they are recommending:

http://www.freedownloadaday.com/

and of course, Gizmo's http://www.techsupportalert.com/
newsletter, both the free and the paid version, are superb.
He has the only newsletter, where I am actually a paid subscriber!
the 10 dollars per year are totally worth!

Hi there Freeware addicts!

Everything has gone very quiet on this thread - where has everyone gone? Time for me to suggest another Freeware website that may well catch your imagination. This website includes some lesser known and rather unusual Freeware and Open Source offerings plus information about technical support sites and forums, as well as games and fun links etc. It is published by someone called 'Bear Bottoms' and he offers links to other Freeware sites, as well as full descriptions of the software that is recommended. Well worth a visit and a good link to include in your 'Favorites' folder!

The all important link to click onto is at -

http://bearbottoms1.com/

There is a web page at Listible.com entitled 'The Most Popular Freeware for Windows'
Obviously a controversial claim - but have a look, it has 195 resources listed altogether - some that you will be familiar with of course. However, there are also some unfamiliar programs well worth investigating. The web address link to click onto is as follows :

I like Iconoid. However, I find a better approach to organizing desktop icons and clearing up the desktop is represented by 8start Launcher (free). I describe it in my weekly blog on free and cheap utilities, http://jonathanstoolbar.blogspot.com (#25, 17 June 2007). There are other similar launchers, too (I've heard good things about Rocket Dock but haven't tried it yet).

I hope this is helpful.

You and Archangle are welcome from all of us I'm sure! Link you posted is a nice site. Just checked it out and it looks like it's fairly popular. Search by keywords. I noticed it seems one has to reset filters on each new page which I don't like personally, but no biggy because they're right at the top of the results section. Thanks for the addition Bobby.

Thanks to all for the heads-up on Iconoid and OSSWin Project. Have you tried the 'Best Vista Downloads' site? The apps are not strictly for Vista, but they do work on Vista (nice change there, eh?). Both freeware and shareware. http://www.bestvistadownloads.com/

http://www.onlythebestfreeware.com/default.asp = Not extensive, but a good selection and building.

http://www.freshdevices.com/ = 4 apps offered. Fresh UI very in depth hidden system settings tweaks all in one place. Fresh diagnose will tell you everything you want to know about your PC from hardware to software and everything in between. Both apps highly recommended.

Thanks for that note BuBBy. I knew I wasn't seeing things when there was no link there yesterday. Since I couldn't obviously see the problem, I assumed there was no link which is typically whats left out. It was underlined and highlighted fine, but when I hovered over the link it didn't show in the taskbar and as I stated to Keilaron, I got the text cursor rather than the active link cursor. Glad you were able to fix it. It worked this morning and I just chalked it up to yesterdays site access problems etc.

Keilaron:

Your right!! You didn't miss it and I apologize for the implication. Apparently when I moused over it yesterday I experienced a small piece of yesterdays site problem myself in that respect and didn't realize or stop to think about it. All I got then was the text cursor indicating no link present, yet all the others were fine, go figure. But... your link is there today! Intact and standing tall! Oh well. Another mystery to add to the archives I suppose. :)

I suppose considering yesterdays issues I should have been more thoughtful under the circumstances rather than make a friendly accusation of oversight. Generally when a link reacts as such, it is due to an oversight on the posters part which is very common in forums. Happens to the best of us. Didn't mean to sound offending in my post. Just ass-u-me-d it was an oversight. No biggy, and again my apology for the implication.

I agree with you on the CSS and relative html tags. I commented about the 'block-quote' tag seemingly not working in another post hoping someone would take notice and try to resolve the issue. I also tried the "a href" tag and it didn't work the other day. I had to edit my post and remove the tag and just post the link itself. Things may be quite a handful for the PTB to keep on a leash for the moment. A little comment/complaint here and there to keep them aware of issues until they get fixed is likely the only way they can be made aware of some issues. Then too, there may be issues behind the scenes we aren't aware of. All things considered here, I think they're doing a reasonably fair job at dealing with the problems that do arise for the most part and trying to make all happy as best they can at the moment.

Regards

BigThunder1 - I didn't miss the link. It was, as links are supposed to be, inline. Just hover your mouse over the title and you'll see it. Sadly, links aren't terribly visible here, and I'm this close to overriding the CSS on this site because it is poorly done.
(Blockquotes, for example, don't show any visual cues whatsoever.)
The reason I didn't bother with three out of five links is that the title of the site was essentially the URL, and therefore didn't say much.

Archangel - Yeah, but was that before the transition to the other company that now takes care of it, or even now? I know that Mailwasher went from free, to commercial, to being handled by another company altogether (Or is he behind that company? I don't remember anymore.).

Well I'm glad I could be some help, and your welcome. LOL... yhaaa, I did the same thing once upon a time with grouped folders. Man what a PIA that was trying to remember what was where. Even when categorized it was difficult at best to find everything hidden inside those folders. And yes, there's always an option. Glad Iconoid works for ya. As I said, I've tried a bunch of 'em and haven't found anything to top Iconoid to date. A well thought out and designed little piece of software if I don't say so myself. If you don't already use the Desktop toolbar on the desktop taskbar, you may want to turn it on and enjoy it now too! It's like having a second-start-programs-menu which includes all your desktop icons when you have 2-? apps open and don't want to minimize all just to get to the desktop. Speaking of minimizing open windows, the 'Hot Corner' feature of Iconoid will come in handy next time your doing the finances or other personal biz and the kids or unwelcome eyes walk into the room. Just put your cursor in your chosen Hot Corner and viola!... all windows instantly minimize to the task bar! Pretty cool feature amongst the others.

I installed Iconoid on a family members PC running Win98se to eliminate the background color highlighting behind the text of desktop icons (as well as it's other features) because that's one of those little pesky things about 98 that was/is a PIA to configure. Seems once you do, then install a new software app, 98 seems to get a mind of it's own and resets the desktop 9 out of 10 times. That Win98 OS is getting replaced with XP real soon btw. 98se was a real milestone historically, but it's time is long past and may it R.I.P.. Linux has come a long way since then as well. Although it has it's shortcomings (as ALL OS's do). I think it's maturing nicely and giving MS some competition. All be it slow considering the market share, but that's changed enough recently to scare MS into a deal with Novel SUSE. And we all know MS does nothing that doesn't concern it's market share...... Nuf said.

Enjoy Iconoid Archangle! Hope it serves you as well as it does me.

Regards,
BigThunder1

Oh I know you wasn't. I like yours better with the timer. This one is manual. I know the feeling of a desktop full of Icons. I created folders so I could group them. Guess what, I filled over half the screen again. LOL

Thanks BigThunder1 your like me, theres always an option.
